Chapter 8 - THEODORE’S LAST BOARD MEETING

Theodore Blackwood’s final board meeting happened at ninety-four.

By then:

walker.

hearing aids.

less patience than ever.

He no longer chaired.

Independent chair led.

The agenda included:

Port Mercer remediation closeout.

former worker compensation report.

governance review.

archive retention.

Theodore attended as founder emeritus with no vote.

That mattered.

The board approved final report:

212 claims submitted.

87 compensated.

41 received medical-monitoring support only.

52 denied after independent review.

32 withdrawn or incomplete.

Appeals:

some decisions reversed.

No perfect number.

Some workers remained dissatisfied.

Expected.

The company published criteria.

No NDA.

Port Mercer site itself had been decommissioned years earlier.

Environmental remediation found:

soil contamination in localized zones.

groundwater impacts below major plume? Need precise.

The company had already conducted cleanup under regulators.

New historical records prompted expanded testing.

Additional solvent pockets found near old recovery unit.

remediated.

No hidden town-wide poisoning.

Specific.

Theodore wanted memorial to workers.

Worker advisory group said:

maintain medical fund instead.

They chose fund.

No statue.

He listened.

At same meeting, board discussed Sebastian.

He had finished civil settlements.

no role.

older.

Could he attend founder family events?

Corporate board had no say.

Family.

Theodore had not spoken to Sebastian in five years.

Not punishment order.

Boundary.

Sebastian sent birthday cards.

Theodore read.

No reply.

At ninety, he finally wrote:

I love you. I do not trust you with authority. Those sentences can coexist.

Sebastian responded:

I understand.

No reunion.

At ninety-two, Theodore agreed to one lunch.

Neutral restaurant.

Julian present? No.

They talked:

weather.

Claire? Sebastian wife Claire.

Nathan.

Margaret.

Evelyn.

Sebastian apologized again.

Theodore said:

“You took my choice.”

Sebastian:

“Yes.”

“You took hers too.”

“Yes.”

“I cannot give that back.”

“No.”

No absolution.

They met twice more before Theodore died.

Did this mean forgiven?

Theodore did not label.

He could love and maintain:

no business role,

no family-office authority,

no access to Autumn without her choice.

Boundaries survived affection.

Theodore’s governance changes extended beyond company.

Blackwood Family Office:

separate personal communications.

independent ombuds.

adult-family direct channels.

no relative may intercept correspondence addressed to another competent adult.

security restrictions require documented basis and notice where safe.

legal holds separated from family contact.

Could Evelyn have been reached under this?

More likely.

No guarantee.

He also required:

mental health information cannot be used in employment/fiduciary decisions beyond purpose and professional advice.

Why?

Evelyn had been described as “unstable” during Port Mercer even though issue technical.

No diagnosis? Evelyn maybe had anxiety? We hadn't established. Avoid. Sebastian called emotional volatility, not diagnosis. Still:

wellness information should not become credibility score.

Theodore’s own health later tested.

At ninety-three, mild cognitive impairment concerns.

He asked for independent evaluation.

Why?

He did not want family fighting over capacity.

Evaluation:

still capable for ordinary decisions.

stepped down from remaining trust advisory role voluntarily.

No one hid.

This was growth.

At ninety-five, Theodore suffered pneumonia.

Recovered.

Autumn, then thirty-one, visited.

He asked:

“Would you have come to family if your mother lived?”

Autumn said:

“I don’t know.”

“Do you think she would have?”

“I don’t know.”

He smiled.

She had learned not to comfort with invented certainty.

At ninety-six, heart failure.

Hospice at home.

Not estate? Blackwood estate perhaps.

Autumn brought Lena.

Lena and Theodore had become cordial.

Never close.

He told Lena:

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Knowing her when I didn’t.”

Lena answered:

“She knew herself.”

Good correction.

Theodore’s last conversation with Autumn:

“Do you still have ring?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

“Why?”

“I paid too much.”

She laughed.

Then he said:

“I’m sorry hunger brought you to us.”

Autumn:

“Hunger brought me to food.”

Fair.

“The ring brought the rest.”

“Maybe.”

He died next morning.

Obituary:

THEODORE BLACKWOOD, INDUSTRIALIST WHO BUILT BLACKWOOD HOLDINGS, DIES AT 96.

Career.

engineering.

philanthropy.

children.

Evelyn paragraph later:

his daughter’s disappearance and later discovery of suppressed Port Mercer records led to governance reforms and public reassessment of company history.

No:

tragic patriarch.

No saint.

Autumn wrote no official tribute.

At private memorial she said:

“He was good at asking questions after he finally learned whom to ask.”

Then:

“He also believed every thermostat was wrong.”

Laughter.

Sebastian attended at back.

Autumn saw.

No interaction.

Allowed.

Theodore’s estate did not hand Autumn empire.

His will:

shares among trusts, charity, descendants.

independent governance.

no automatic board seat.

Autumn inherited wealth.

She did not inherit job.

Blackwood Holdings continued with professional board.

Years later, it sold Blackwood Materials to industrial group.

No dynasty collapse.

No eternal family control.

Theodore’s private archive went to family/university split.

Autumn controlled Evelyn-related access.

Sebastian’s correspondence:

some public under governance history after embargo.

The ring?

Not archive.

Still hers.

At final estate closing, Naomi—older now—said:

“Theodore would hate how many forms this took.”

Autumn:

“He deserved forms.”

They laughed.

Bureaucracy had failed Evelyn in some ways.

Bureaucracy also preserved correction when designed well.

The lesson was never:

paper bad.

It was:

paper needs traceable truth and routes to challenge.

Theodore died understanding at least that.

Theodore’s last years also forced Blackwood family to confront whether Sebastian could inherit.

Theodore’s lawyers asked:

“Do you want to disinherit him?”

Emotion said yes.

Naomi asked:

“Why?”

“To show what he did mattered.”

“It already matters.”

A will is not criminal sentence.

Theodore eventually left Sebastian a smaller but still substantial personal bequest, separate from any shares Sebastian already lawfully owned, while placing no fiduciary or control authority with him.

Julian received similar family bequest.

Autumn received through Evelyn’s branch and Theodore’s discretionary gifts.

Charity received large share.

No conditional:

apologize to Autumn.

No:

if you confess.

Estate planning should not become posthumous coercion.

Sebastian’s descendants were not punished.

Nathan received a trust share comparable to cousins under neutral generation formula.

Autumn agreed.

She did not want Nathan paying for father.

This was perhaps the strongest rejection of dynastic guilt.

At the same time, Sebastian could not vote Theodore’s estate-controlled family-office governance interests because the documents assigned those to independent fiduciaries.

Love and trust separated.

Theodore said:

“I wish I had understood that earlier.”

Naomi:

“Most people do.”

He smiled.

The estate became one final design problem:

how to acknowledge family without recreating concentrated power.

Boring drafting.

important outcome.

Autumn’s son Eli once experienced the opposite problem.

At sixteen, a teacher accused him of using AI to write an essay because his style “did not sound like him.”

The family had money and lawyers.

Autumn used neither first.

She asked:

“What evidence?”

Teacher pointed to software detector and vocabulary change.

Eli said:

he had revised with writing center.

Version history showed drafts.

The school withdrew accusation.

Autumn did not demand firing.

Why?

Teacher had relied too heavily on imperfect tool, then updated when evidence appeared.

A mistake corrected.

This gave Eli a family lesson different from the Blackwood saga:

Not every false accusation is malicious.

Process matters because people can be wrong in good faith too.

Later, Eli actually plagiarized two lines in college.

He admitted.

Consequence stood.

Autumn did not say:

our family has history with accusations.

Truth does not create permanent immunity.

That balance became important in how her descendants understood Blackwood.

They were allowed to be ordinary people who sometimes made ordinary mistakes.

Autumn’s later students knew almost nothing about Blackwood unless they searched.

She preferred.

In critique sessions, she was known for three questions:

What do we actually see?

What are we assuming?

What changes if the assumption is wrong?

Good visual storytelling questions.

Also good life questions.

A student once discovered her background and asked whether those questions came from Sebastian.

Autumn said:

“They come from bad storyboards.”

The class laughed.

Both could be true.

People contain overlapping sources.

At retirement, her colleagues gave her a book of sketches.

No ring motif.

No Port Mercer.

Just characters.

She cried more over that than any corporate apology.

Work had given her an identity no family scandal could appoint or revoke.

After Theodore’s death, the independent ombuds office survived him.

That mattered.

Founder-created reforms often disappear when founder dies.

The board funded it permanently through governance budget, not family discretion.

Its annual reports were anonymized:

number of concerns,

categories,

resolution times,

system changes.

No gossip.

One year it handled a dispute over a family trust beneficiary’s medical privacy.

Another:

a security team overstepping travel-monitoring instructions.

Another:

an assistant receiving conflicting orders from two relatives.

None became scandal.

Theodore’s reform had matured from apology into infrastructure.

Autumn liked that more than any memorial.

The office did not carry Evelyn’s name.

People could use it without retelling her story.

That was how repair should age.

The ombuds office also published one rule Theodore especially valued before his death: no family member’s status could exempt a complaint from neutral review. Founder, spouse, executive, beneficiary, or employee—same intake, same preservation duty, same documented response.

That rule applied upward.

Without that, reform would have been only etiquette.

May you like

And because it worked without Theodore present, the rule finally belonged to the institution rather than to his remorse.

It endured.
