Chapter 8

THE NAME ON THE TAPE

Grace did not look at Amara immediately.

That was the worst part.

For three full seconds, everyone looked at Grace instead.

Waiting.

Watching.

Then Grace turned.

Amara's face had gone completely blank.

"No."

Nora stopped the recording.

Grace spoke carefully.

"Dad said your name."

"I heard him."

"Why?"

"I don't know."

Helen looked suspicious.

Amara saw it.

"Do not."

Helen said, "I didn't say anything."

"You didn't have to."

Grace stepped between them.

"Nobody decides what this means before we know."

Amara looked at her.

"Thank you."

But doubt had already entered.

Not trust destroyed.

Trust forced to work.

Ortiz replayed the audio.

Peter's voice.

"The person running Green House now is someone Grace trusts. Amara Ellis."

Then static.

Then something they had missed.

A second voice in the background.

Female.

"Peter, stop."

Amara closed her eyes.

"My mother."

Grace looked at her.

"Lila?"

"Yes."

Nora amplified the audio.

Lila's voice became clearer.

"Peter, stop. That's not what the record means."

Grace frowned.

The recording continued.

Peter coughed.

"Then explain why her name is on every Harbor Health transfer."

Lila said, "Because she is the beneficiary."

Amara stared.

"What?"

The recording ended.

Ortiz looked at Amara.

"Beneficiary of what?"

"I don't know."

Lila was called.

She arrived at Green House an hour later, furious and frightened.

Amara did not let her hug her.

"Tell me."

Lila sat.

"Helena Caldwell created a trust for you."

Claire frowned.

"My mother?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because she knew Marcus had used your genetic material to create Amara."

Amara looked at Claire.

"So the trust was guilt money."

"Protection money," Lila said.

"From who?"

"Marcus."

Lila explained that Helena secretly moved assets from Caldwell-controlled charities into Harbor Health, a nonprofit network designed to fund care for Green House survivors.

After Helena died, Peter Hart helped administer it.

Amara was named eventual beneficiary because Helena believed the person most wronged by Marcus's reproductive scheme should control the money.

Amara laughed bitterly.

"Millions of dollars I didn't know existed."

"Yes."

"Using my name."

"Yes."

"That made Dad think I ran Green House."

"Yes."

Grace looked at Helen.

"Why didn't Peter tell you?"

"He tried."

"What happened?"

Lila looked down.

"Peter discovered someone was diverting money from Harbor Health."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Again."

Lila flinched.

"I truly don't."

Ortiz examined the financial ledger.

Payments moved through Harbor Health into private security firms.

One name repeated.

NORTHSTAR CONSULTING.

Nora recognized it.

"Marcus used Northstar to track me."

Grace's stomach tightened.

The charity intended to help victims had funded the people hunting them.

"Who controlled the account?" Ortiz asked.

Lila shook her head.

"Peter."

Helen stared.

"My husband?"

"Until his illness."

"After?"

Lila looked at Amara.

"Automatic succession."

Amara went pale.

"To me?"

"Legally, yes."

Grace felt the accusation return in a different shape.

Amara had controlled money without knowing.

Someone may have acted under her authority.

"Who had power of attorney?" Ortiz asked.

Lila answered.

"My attorney."

"Name."

"Simon Wells."

Grace knew him.

Everyone did.

Simon Wells had officiated Grace and Amara's wedding.

He was not clergy.

He was a retired judge and family friend licensed to officiate civil ceremonies.

The man had stood three feet from them when Jamie grabbed the dress.

Grace whispered, "Simon."

Helen looked horrified.

"He worked with Peter."

Nora said, "He knew Marcus."

Claire nodded.

"He handled my fake death documents."

Silence.

Ortiz's face hardened.

"Where is he now?"

Security footage showed Simon leaving the wedding five minutes after the blackout.

No one had noticed.

They went to his home.

Empty.

Office cleared.

Computer gone.

One item remained on the desk.

A wedding program.

Grace and Amara's names circled.

On the back:

YOU WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO FIND THE RECORDER YET.

Grace stared.

"Yet."

Nora looked at Amara.

"Meaning the recorder was part of a plan."

Jamie had only accelerated it.

Grace thought back.

The recorder sewn into Amara's gown.

Who had access?

The seamstress.

Recommended by Helen.

But Simon may have known.

"Who put it there?" Grace asked.

Nora looked guilty.

"I did."

Grace stared.

"What?"

"I gave it to the seamstress."

Amara blinked.

"You sewed evidence into my wedding dress."

"I needed Grace to hear it in public."

"You could have handed it to her."

Nora shook her head.

"Simon monitored all direct communication."

Grace laughed wildly.

"So our wedding was a delivery system."

"I'm sorry."

Amara looked exhausted.

"At this point, apology cards should be part of the centerpieces."

Grace nearly laughed.

Then Nora said, "But Simon wasn't supposed to know."

Ortiz held up the note.

"He did."

"How?"

The answer came from Jamie.

They had brought him to the station after Green House was secured.

He was coloring beside Ethan.

"Old man saw."

Everyone turned.

"What old man?" Nora asked.

"Wedding man."

"Simon?"

Jamie nodded.

"He saw lady put black thing in dress."

Nora frowned.

"When?"

"Before flowers."

The seamstress.

Jamie had been there.

"Why didn't he remove it?" Grace asked.

Jamie shrugged.

"Lady gave him money."

Nora stared.

"Who?"

Jamie pointed at Helen.

Helen recoiled.

"Me?"

Jamie shook his head.

"Other Helen."

Silence.

Claire whispered, "Helena?"

Her mother had been dead ten years.

Jamie frowned.

"No. Same name sound."

Grace thought.

Helen.

Helena.

Hannah.

All the H.H. initials.

"Hannah?" she asked.

Jamie brightened.

"Yes."

Everyone looked at Hannah.

She had joined them after treatment.

Her face went white.

"I never went near the dress."

Jamie shook his head.

"Not you."

Grace felt madness creeping in.

"Another Hannah?"

Ethan said, "Wait."

He pulled up an old photograph.

Helena Caldwell had a sister.

Hannah Hayes.

Claire stared.

"Aunt Hannah."

Ethan nodded.

"She disappeared after Mom died."

Grace looked at Helen.

"Do you know her?"

Helen went pale.

"Yes."

"Where is she?"

"I thought she was dead."

Of course.

Ortiz searched records.

Hannah Hayes was alive.

Age sixty-two.

Last known residence unknown.

Former profession: attorney.

Former employer: Caldwell Family Foundation.

Nora whispered, "She would know every account."

Grace understood.

"Simon wasn't acting alone."

Helen nodded.

"Hannah Hayes controlled the legal side."

"And she could use H.H."

"Yes."

The maze simplified.

Not entirely.

Enough.

A phone rang on Simon's empty desk.

Old landline.

Everyone froze.

Ortiz answered on speaker.

A woman spoke.

"Grace."

"Who is this?"

"You know."

Grace looked at Claire.

Claire whispered, "Aunt Hannah."

Grace said, "Where is Simon?"

"With me."

"Why?"

"Because he became sentimental."

"What do you want?"

"The master index."

"It's public."

A pause.

"Not all of it."

Grace looked at Nora.

Hannah continued.

"Page fifty-four."

Helen whispered, "There is no page fifty-four."

The woman laughed.

"There is."

"What is on it?"

"The only transaction Marcus never knew about."

Grace's skin prickled.

"What transaction?"

Hannah Hayes answered.

"The child Helena Caldwell stole from him."

Claire stared.

"My mother stole a child?"

"Yes."

"Who?"

A pause.

"Grace."

Grace felt the room vanish.

Hannah continued.

"Grace Hart is not Helen and Peter's biological daughter."

Helen shouted, "That's a lie."

Hannah laughed.

"Then ask Helen why there is no hospital photograph from Grace's birth."

Grace turned to her mother.

Helen's face said too much.

"Mom?"

Helen began crying.

Grace's voice became small.

"Is she lying?"

Helen closed her eyes.

"No."

The word broke something.

Grace stepped back.

Amara caught her.

Helen said, "You are my daughter."

"Biologically."

Helen shook her head.

"No."

Nora stared.

"Then who is she?"

Helen looked at Claire.

At Ethan.

Then at Grace.

"Helena brought Grace to us when she was two days old."

Grace could not breathe.

"Whose child?"

Helen whispered, "She never told me."

The phone crackled.

Hannah Hayes supplied the answer.

"Mine."

Grace stared at the speaker.

"And Marcus Caldwell's."

Ethan's face went white.

Claire covered her mouth.

Grace looked at Ethan.

If true, he was her half-brother.

Marcus, the man at the center of everything, was her biological father.

Hannah continued.

"Helena saved you from him."

Grace gripped Amara's arm.

"Why?"

"Because Marcus wanted to raise you inside the system."

"What system?"

"Not Green House."

A pause.

"The family."

Grace whispered, "What's the difference?"

Hannah laughed softly.

"Green House stole children for other people."

Then her voice turned cold.

"The Caldwell family kept the most valuable ones."

Grace asked Helen about her adoption that evening.

They sat in Ortiz's office while everyone else chased Hannah Hayes.

"Did Dad know?"

Helen nodded.

"From the beginning."

"Did he want me?"

Helen looked almost offended.

"He adored you before he met you."

Grace swallowed.

"How?"

"Helena called us from the hospital. She said there was a baby who needed to disappear from Marcus Caldwell."

"That sounds terrible."

"It was."

"What did Dad say?"

Helen smiled through tears.

"He said, 'Bring her.'"

Grace covered her mouth.

Peter.

Her father.

Not biologically.

Entirely.

"Did he ever regret it?"

"Never."

"Even when Marcus threatened us?"

"Especially then."

Grace cried.

For days, every secret had taken something from her.

This one gave something back.

Not a bloodline.

A choice.

May you like

Peter had chosen her before she could offer anything in return.

Grace finally understood why the word father could survive a DNA result.
