Michael was not charged.
He had not known.
Still, he had work.
He worked too much.
He depended on Denise.
He treated Harbor forms like Denise territory.
He treated Sarah concerns like household logistics.
He lived in old apartment with unsafe window and had delayed child guard because landlord said parts ordered.
He had told himself:
Lily doesn’t walk yet.
She pulled up.
Risk changed.

Michael installed same day.
He also contacted landlord about fire escape rust.
Inspection found:
platform structurally sound but railing spacing not child-safe by modern expectations.

Responsibility separate.
He improved.
Therapist Samuel Reed asked:
“What do you blame yourself for?”
“Everything.”

“I assumed family loyalty equals safety.”

Sitter had gone downstairs to get delivery, Lily in apartment? Different. Michael addressed.
No abuse.
Process.
Michael eventually left Harbor program when income improved.
He felt weird.
Naomi said:
“That’s success.”
No shame.
At forty-five, he moved to larger apartment with elevator.
Not luxury.
Still city.
Lily missed Mrs. Alvarez already gone.
Old courtyard.
Michael took no fire escape photo.
At fifty, he dated.

He met Nora Ellis, librarian.

He liked fishing.

Difference.

Lily eulogy:

No perfect father.
