Chapter 2

Judge William Mercer had been a family secret disguised as a public fact.
Everyone knew Eleanor had a younger brother.
Few people connected him to the Mercer political family because William used his late father’s surname from a first marriage.
He had served on the state family court for seventeen years.
Rachel had met him at Christmas dinners.
He gave Mia wooden puzzles and called her “little senator.”
She had never thought about what it meant that Eleanor’s brother could sign custody orders.
Until he apparently did.
Naomi stood near the front window.
“Security detail isn’t knocking anymore.”
Rachel looked at the camera.
Two men remained on the walkway.
Eleanor stood between them.
Patient.
Certain.
Rachel knew that posture.
Eleanor expected doors to open eventually.
Adrian Bell remained on speaker.
“Rachel, I’m calling emergency family counsel.”
“What does the order mean right now?”
“I haven’t seen it.”
Naomi zoomed the doorbell camera.
Eleanor held the first page toward the lens.
Temporary protective custody order.
Petitioner: David Mercer.
Respondent: Rachel Mercer.
Rachel stared.
“David filed it.”
Adrian said, “Maybe.”
“What does that mean?”
“His name may be on it. That does not tell us who prepared it.”
Rachel almost laughed.
After the forged signature in her own name, paperwork had become a character with motives.
The intercom clicked.
David’s voice came through this time.
“Rachel.”
She froze.
He was there.
The camera angle widened.
David stood at the bottom of the steps.
No tie.
Coat open.
He looked tired.
For years Rachel could read his face better than anyone.
Tonight she saw irritation.
Fear.
And something like shame.
“Rachel, please open the door.”
Naomi looked at her.
Rachel pressed the intercom button.
“Did you file a custody order?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt.
“Why?”
“You left with Mia while extremely upset.”
Rachel laughed.
“You watched your mother assault me.”
“Mom shouldn’t have hit you.”
“And Mia?”
Silence.
Rachel pressed.
“You watched her throw Mia’s dinner against the wall.”
“I was going to handle it.”
“When?”
“After everyone calmed down.”
Rachel looked toward Mia, who had stopped eating.
The child was listening.
Rachel lowered her voice.
“Go upstairs with Aunt Naomi.”
Mia shook her head.
“I want you.”
Naomi crouched.
“I’m coming too.”
Rachel forced a smile.
“Pick a movie.”
Mia hesitated.
Then went with Naomi.
Only when she was out of the room did Rachel press the intercom again.
“How many times has your mother withheld food from Mia?”
David did not answer.
“David.”
“I don’t know.”
“Wrong.”
“What do you want me to say?”
“The truth.”
“I’m trying.”
“No. You’re trying to get inside.”
His jaw tightened on camera.
“The order gives me temporary custody.”
“Your uncle signed it.”
“My uncle is a judge.”
“Your mother’s brother.”
“That does not make the order invalid.”
Adrian’s voice came from Rachel’s phone.
“It may make it ethically radioactive.”
David heard.
“Adrian?”
“Yes.”
David’s face changed.
“You need to stay out of this.”
“I am your family attorney.”
“Not anymore.”
Adrian went silent.
Rachel stared at the screen.
“Why?”
David did not answer.
Adrian said quietly, “Because I refused to rewrite Mia’s trust.”
Rachel’s pulse jumped.
David looked toward Eleanor.
There.
A reaction.
Small.
Enough.
Rachel said, “So this is about the trust.”
“No.”
“Then why fire Adrian?”
“He was creating conflict.”
“By refusing your mother.”
David rubbed his forehead.
“Rachel, the company is under pressure.”
“What company?”
“Mercer Holdings.”
“What kind of pressure?”
“Debt.”
Rachel laughed bitterly.
“And Mia’s shares fix it?”
“No.”
“Then explain.”
Eleanor stepped toward the intercom.
“This conversation is absurd.”
Rachel ignored her.
“David.”
He finally said, “The board wants unified voting control.”
“Mia owns thirty-two percent.”
His face changed.
“You know.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Your former attorney told me.”
David looked furious.
Rachel almost smiled.
Not because anything was funny.
Because for once information belonged to her before the family could manage it.
“Does Mia know?” David asked.
“She is five.”
“Good.”
Rachel stared.
“Why is that good?”
“Because she shouldn’t be dragged into adult financial issues.”
Rachel’s voice sharpened.
“She was dragged in when your mother started punishing her.”
“That is separate.”
“No. It isn’t.”
The doorbell camera showed Eleanor’s jaw tighten.
Rachel continued.
“Your family treats her like an asset when paperwork needs signatures and a child when she asks why she is hungry.”
David looked away.
The words landed.
Good.
Adrian said, “I’ve got counsel.”
A new voice joined.
“Rachel? My name is Maya Brooks.”
Naomi’s wife.
Rachel had met her twice.
Family law attorney.
Rachel almost cried with relief.
“Maya.”
“Do not open the door.”
Rachel laughed softly.
“Popular advice.”
Maya continued.
“The order was signed forty minutes ago without notice. I’m reviewing emergency options.”
“Can they take Mia?”
“Not without law enforcement enforcement authority.”
Rachel looked at the men outside.
“David has security.”
“Private security cannot execute a custody order.”
The men on the walkway heard through the intercom.
One shifted uncomfortably.
Good.
Maya continued.
“If sheriff’s deputies arrive, we do not physically resist. We challenge immediately.”
Rachel’s stomach turned.
“So I might have to hand her over.”
“Temporarily, yes.”
No.
Everything inside Rachel rejected the word.
But Maya was not promising impossibilities.
Rachel appreciated that.
Naomi came downstairs.
“Mia’s watching cartoons.”
She looked at the camera.
“Someone else just arrived.”
A county sheriff’s vehicle pulled to the curb.
Rachel stopped breathing.
Maya heard.
“Rachel?”
“Deputy.”
“Okay. Stay calm.”
The deputy walked to the porch.
Spoke with Eleanor.
Read the order.
Then approached the door.
He rang.
Naomi whispered, “I can open.”
Rachel shook her head.
“My daughter.”
She opened the door with the chain still latched.
The deputy removed his hat.
“Mrs. Mercer?”
“Yes.”
“I’m Deputy Carl Hayes. I have an emergency custody order requiring Mia Mercer be released to Senator Mercer.”
Rachel’s hands shook.
“My attorney is on speaker.”
Maya spoke.
“Deputy Hayes, this is attorney Maya Brooks. We believe the order was obtained through undisclosed family conflict involving the issuing judge.”
Hayes looked uncomfortable.
“I’m required to follow the order as written.”
“Has child protective services reviewed allegations of food deprivation and physical aggression inside the Mercer residence?”
Eleanor snapped, “There are no such allegations.”
Rachel looked at her.
“There are now.”
David closed his eyes.
Hayes said, “Ma’am, I need to see the child.”
Rachel felt panic rise.
Maya’s voice steadied her.
“Rachel, let him confirm Mia is safe.”
Naomi went upstairs.
She returned holding Mia’s hand.
Mia saw Eleanor and stopped.
“No.”
Hayes crouched.
“Hi, Mia.”
The child gripped Naomi.
“Are you police?”
“Sheriff’s deputy.”
“Are you taking me to Grandma?”
Everyone went silent.
Hayes looked at Rachel.
Then David.
Then Eleanor.
“Do you want to go with your dad?”
Mia looked at David.
Her face changed.
Rachel watched her child calculate.
At five.
That alone was wrong.
Mia whispered, “Will Grandma be there?”
David said, “Mia—”
Hayes raised one hand.
“Let her answer.”
Mia looked at him.
“I don’t want Grandma.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“This is coaching.”
Hayes turned.
“Ma’am, please step back.”
Eleanor froze.
Rachel almost loved him.
Mia continued.
“Grandma says I don’t eat if I’m rude.”
Hayes’s face changed.
David went pale.
Eleanor said, “She is misrepresenting discipline.”
Hayes stood.
“Do you have child services on scene?”
No one did.
He used his radio.
Eleanor’s certainty cracked.
“This order requires immediate transfer.”
Hayes looked at her.
“It requires me to ensure the transfer doesn’t place the child in immediate danger.”
Rachel stared.
Hope was dangerous.
Still, she let herself breathe.
Within twenty minutes a child protective services investigator arrived.
She interviewed Mia separately in Naomi’s upstairs office.
Rachel waited in the kitchen.
David stood outside.
Eleanor remained on the porch.
Naomi made coffee no one drank.
Maya arrived in person.
So did Adrian Bell.
Rachel looked at him.
“You were fired.”
“Yes.”
“And came anyway.”
“I helped build the trust documents they’re abusing.”
His face looked gray.
“I should have warned you earlier.”
“About what?”
He hesitated.
“Mia’s meals.”
Rachel felt cold.
“What?”
Adrian sat.
“Six months ago a household employee told me Eleanor was using food as punishment.”
Rachel could not breathe.
“You knew.”
“I heard an allegation.”
“And?”
“I told David.”
Rachel stared.
“What did he say?”
Adrian looked down.
“He said Eleanor was strict but loved Mia.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
David knew.
Not vaguely.
Not tonight.
Six months.
“How many times did you follow up?”
Adrian’s silence answered.
Rachel stood.
“You can leave.”
“Rachel.”
“Leave.”
“I’m trying to help now.”
“Now.”
Her voice cracked.
“Everyone is trying to help now.”
Adrian nodded.
He placed a folder on the table.
“Then keep this.”
“What is it?”
“Board documents.”
“Mia’s trust?”
“Yes.”
Rachel did not touch it.
Adrian continued.
“Mercer Holdings is facing a hostile acquisition.”
Rachel stared.
“By who?”
“Vale Capital.”
Naomi frowned.
“Eleanor’s maiden family?”
Adrian nodded.
Rachel felt the room tilt.
“Eleanor’s family company is trying to buy David’s family company.”
“Yes.”
“How does Mia fit?”
“Her shares can block the acquisition.”
Rachel looked toward the porch.
Eleanor.
David’s mother.
A Mercer by marriage.
A Vale by birth.
She was controlling both sides of a corporate war.
“Which way does Eleanor want Mia’s shares voted?”
Adrian swallowed.
“In favor of the acquisition.”
Rachel stared.
“Why?”
“Because Vale Capital offered her a private settlement.”
“How much?”
“Forty million.”
Naomi whispered, “Jesus.”
Rachel looked at the custody order.
Remove Rachel.
Place Mia under David.
Keep Eleanor in control of daily care.
Restructure trust voting authority.
This was not only family abuse.
It was a financial plan.
Mia’s hunger had been happening inside a house where adults were fighting over the value attached to her name.
Maya picked up the folder.
“Do you have proof?”
“Emails.”
“Signed?”
“Digital.”
Rachel almost laughed.
After tonight, signatures meant nothing.
Adrian said, “Some are voice messages.”
Better.
Maya opened the first audio file.
Eleanor’s voice.
Cold.
Precise.
“David is weak when Rachel pushes. Remove Rachel from the trust and he’ll vote correctly.”
Rachel’s chest tightened.
A man’s voice answered.
“Can you get custody?”
Eleanor said:
“William can handle the temporary order.”
The room went silent.
Judge William Mercer.
Her brother.
The voice asked:
“And the child?”
Eleanor laughed softly.
“Mia does what she’s told when consequences are consistent.”
Rachel’s hands curled into fists.
Then the recording continued.
The unknown man said:
“Food again?”
Eleanor replied:
“It works.”
Rachel stopped breathing.
Naomi grabbed her hand.
Maya paused the recording.
No one spoke.
Then upstairs, Mia screamed.
Rachel ran.
She reached the office.
The CPS investigator stood near the window.
Mia was pointing outside.
“What?”
The child was crying.
“That man.”
Rachel looked.
Across the street, a black sedan was parked beneath a tree.
A man sat behind the wheel.
Mia whispered:
“He comes when Grandma gets mad.”
The sedan pulled away.
Adrian reached the window.
His face went pale.
“You know him?” Rachel asked.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“Vale Capital security.”
Rachel turned toward Eleanor on the porch.
For the first time, her mother-in-law looked afraid.
Not offended.
Not angry.
Afraid.
Which meant Eleanor was not the only person controlling this plan.
May you like
Someone else was watching the house.
And Mia already knew his face.
