Chapter 5

THE FALSE PROVENANCE
Grant & Vale froze the Diamond Rose file before noon the next day.
Then the Klimt.
The Torah pointer record.
Every object linked to the attic ledger.
Independent audit team copied databases.
No family IT.
No internal edit access.
Sebastian recused himself from provenance committee.
Charlotte did not join it.
Good.
She was witness and affected family member.
Not judge.
Dr. Miriam Feld became external expert.
Priya Mehta handled legal.
A museum restitution specialist joined.
Daniel Stein retained his own counsel.
Clear sides.
Then the digital record.
Grant & Vale catalogue from eight years earlier listed:
Provenance:
Private collection, Vienna, pre-1939.
De Vries Estate, Amsterdam.
Otto Weiss Gallery, Zurich.
Edmund Grant, London, 1968.
Problem:
No De Vries document existed before Charlotte left.
System metadata showed a scan uploaded six months after her disappearance.
Uploaded under executive administrator credentials.
Helena had access.
But did she create?
Audit recovered email.
Helena to archive manager:
We have found the missing de Vries documentation. Please update without reopening the object history.
Attachment:
a letter dated 1956.
Miriam examined.
Paper scan only.
Original never archived.
Signature looked wrong.
The supposed de Vries estate executor had died in 1952.
Impossible.
Sebastian stared.
Helena had inserted a false link.
Why?
To make provenance look clean.
If Rose moved from Adler to de Vries before Weiss, wartime coercion obscured.
Then archive manager.
Still employed.
Named Paul Mercer.
He said Helena gave scan and instructed update.
He did not verify because she was family board vice-chair.
He assumed original elsewhere.
Bad process.
Not mastermind.
Then:
“Did Sebastian know?”
“No.”
Good.
Then Helena.
She retained counsel.
Submitted statement.
At first:
She believed de Vries letter authentic.
But email metadata on her computer showed document created from a Word file?
Maybe too technologically traceable after scan. Let's make OCR reveals font impossible? Could be fabricated through a retired dealer's letterhead. Better:
Original PDF properties show it was generated from an image editing suite eight years ago. But users can modify metadata. Still evidence.
Then another email to a private document dealer:
Need period letterhead/sample signature for Johannes de Vries estate.
There.
Hard.
Helena eventually admitted.
She created false provenance document with help from a document restorer, telling him it was for exhibition replica? He may not know misuse.
This was serious.
No need exact criminal charges yet.
Then why keep Rose out of actual auction? It was Heritage Exhibition, not sale. But false catalogue still public.
Grant & Vale used it for loan and insurance.
Potential fraud.
The company board opened independent investigation.
Helena resigned all roles.
No access.
Then Daniel Stein.
He met Sebastian and Charlotte separately.
Late sixties.
Retired architect.
His grandmother Rebecca had been Miriam Adler’s daughter.
Daniel brought family photographs.
One.
Vienna, 1937.
Miriam wearing Diamond Rose at neckline.
Same crescent repair? Was repair later. No. It had original different stem? Need identification by unique setting. Pink center stone and seven petals.
Daniel said:
“My grandmother remembered it.”
Rebecca had described.
She believed it vanished after family apartment inventory.
Miriam escaped to Switzerland? Let's establish.
Miriam survived war, eventually New York.
But never recovered property.
She died 1980s.
Rebecca died three years ago.
Daniel said:
“My mother did not spend her life chasing jewellery.”
Good.
“She built a life.”
Important.
Then:
“She did tell us this piece was taken.”
Not only money.
Memory.
Sebastian said:
“If review confirms—”
Daniel interrupted.
“I know how reviews work.”
Fair.
Then Charlotte:
“I want it returned.”
Daniel looked.
“Do you own it?”
Charlotte paused.
“No.”
Exactly.
She held physical object but ownership disputed.
Sebastian family collection? It had been gifted to Charlotte by Sebastian’s mother, but if title flawed, gift flawed.
Daniel:
“Then process.”
Good.
No sentimental handover at café.
Then independent review.
Evidence strength:
Strong that Adler owned prewar.
Strong that 1941 disposition coerced.
Strong chain from intermediary to Weiss.
Strong Edmund knew potential claim.
False de Vries insertion confirmed recent.
Legal title under UK law complex due good-faith purchase, limitation, heirs, jurisdiction.
But Grant family could voluntarily restitute regardless.
Board of family collection entity? Maybe Diamond Rose personally Charlotte? Grandmother gave. Could complicate.
Let's say legal title currently registered in Grant Family Collection Ltd, despite personal use loans. Grandmother had lifetime loaned to Charlotte, not formal gift? But user said belonged to Charlotte. Let's preserve emotionally: it had been gifted, but insurance/title stayed family entity. Hmm.
Better: Sebastian’s mother gave Charlotte possession and wrote gift note, making Charlotte claimant owner. Charlotte chooses restitution. Great.
She is owner if prior title valid.
No board needed.
But company catalogue involved.
Charlotte signed conditional restitution agreement to Daniel after expert determination.
Then asked:
“Do you want it now or after review report?”
Daniel:
“After report. My mother would have wanted paperwork.”
They smiled.
Then Grace.
She did not attend meetings.
Good.
She asked Charlotte:
“Are we giving rose away?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because it belonged to another family before ours and it left them in a way that wasn’t fair.”
Grace frowned.
“Did Granddad steal?”
“No.”
“Did Helena?”
“No.”
Important.
“The problem started before either was born. Helena later lied about the history.”
Grace:
“Why?”
“To protect family reputation and money.”
“Bad.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Can I see it again?”
“Yes, before it goes.”
Good.
No child moral burden.
Then Sebastian and Helena.
They met with lawyers nearby but not in room initially.
Sebastian said:
“You made a false provenance document.”
Helena looked.
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you just destroy ledger?”
“Because I couldn’t be sure Charlotte had not copied.”
“So you created another story.”
“Yes.”
“Did you think no one would ever check?”
“I thought if the object had a clean published chain, future researchers would stop at the catalogue.”
That is chilling.
Then:
“You knew exactly how authority works.”
“Yes.”
Her expertise.
Then Sebastian asked:
“Were there other false records?”
Helena answered:
“No that I created.”
Independent audit would verify.
Good.
No endless secret.
Then:
“Why the other objects?”
She had not altered them yet.
Only Rose because high-profile centenary display.
That limits.
Then:
“Did you know the Torah pointer history?”
“Yes.”
“Why not act?”
“Same reason.”
But no false digital edit.
Then Sebastian:
“You built half your public life around cultural philanthropy.”
Helena looked down.
“I know.”
No hypocrisy speech.
Then:
“Did you love Charlotte?”
Helena flinched.
Of course.
She was her mother? We need settle. Yes, Helena is Charlotte's biological mother. That makes story huge.
Let's state explicitly now:
“She's my daughter.”
Sebastian:
“Exactly.”
Helena cried.
Then:
“I thought I was protecting what would still be hers.”
The company.
Fortune.
Name.
Sebastian:
“She wanted truth more.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“You decided what inheritance should matter.”
“Yes.”
There.
Then Charlotte refused meeting Helena for now.
Fine.
She allowed one letter through Priya.
Helena wrote:
I am your mother. That gave me responsibility, not authority over your conscience.
Strong.
Then:
I told myself I was preserving the company you would inherit. In reality I preserved my own decision and made you pay for it.
Good.
Charlotte read.
No response.
Then Grant & Vale public statement.
Short.
The company announced independent provenance review of several family-associated works after discovery of previously unexamined wartime documentation and inaccurate catalogue information.
No names of heirs until consent.
And:
A former family director has resigned pending conclusions regarding a historical catalogue record.
Helena not fully named? Public corporate governance likely eventually. But for now.
Then press speculation.
No Grace.
No Charlotte location.
Sebastian refused interview.
Good.
Then one reporter found old story:
Charlotte Grant vanished after alleged theft of family brooch.
That was never public? Maybe society gossip.
Now resurfaced.
Grant & Vale issued correction:
No criminal complaint was filed against Charlotte Grant and the company has no basis to describe her possession of the object as theft.
Important.
Then Charlotte saw.
She texted Sebastian:
Thank you.
Two words.
He stared for a long time.
The false provenance had been created to make questions stop.
Instead it became the strongest proof that the family had known enough to be afraid.
And once that proof surfaced, there was no longer any respectable way to call silence prudence.
The false provenance document changed the scandal from inherited history to a modern choice. Helena had not created the wartime wrong, but she had chosen to hide it.
