Chương 1

“Olivia.”
Luca Moretti’s voice stopped me beside his chair.
“Yes, Mr. Moretti?”
“Look at me.”
My stomach tightened.
Twenty-six guests sat beneath the chandeliers of his Chicago mansion, celebrating his engagement to Vanessa Bellini.
Crystal.
Silver.
White roses.
A string quartet playing softly from the music room.
And I was three guests away from reaching the kitchen without letting anyone see what Vanessa had done to my face.
My left eye was swelling beneath the dark hair I had carefully brushed across it.
The white of the eye had turned a frightening red along one side where tiny vessels had burst after the blow.
A narrow cut sat near the outer edge of my eyebrow.
It had stopped bleeding twice.
It had started again twice.
Now a thin line of blood had mixed with the tears in the corner of my eye and disappeared beneath the makeup I had pressed over my cheekbone.
Every time I leaned forward with the platter, pain spread across the left side of my face.
But I had exactly seventy-four dollars until payday.
My rent was due in four days.
My mother had paid my phone bill the month before and had begun pretending that groceries she bought “by accident” were not for me.
Missing a shift was not an option.
Neither was telling Luca what I had discovered in the upstairs guest room that afternoon.
I kept my head angled right.
“I’m fine, sir.”
Luca set down his fork.
“I didn’t ask if you were fine.”
Vanessa smiled from his right side.
Red silk gown.
Diamonds at her throat.
Perfect posture.
“Darling, she probably got shampoo in her eye.”
A few guests smiled politely.
I lowered the platter.
Luca’s gaze stayed on my face.
“Olivia.”
I knew that tone.
Not loud.
Worse.
“Move your hair.”
My fingers went cold.
Vanessa lifted her wine.
“Honestly, Luca, she is serving dinner. Do we need to inspect her?”
He did not look at Vanessa.
“Olivia.”
Slowly, I reached up.
I pushed the dark hair away from my left eye.
The room changed.
Someone inhaled sharply.
The bruise had darkened to purple across my cheek.
The skin under the eye was swollen.
The white of the eye was streaked red.
And at the edge of my eyebrow, the cut had begun leaking again.
A tiny drop tracked toward my temple.
Luca stood.
“What happened?”
I looked at the tablecloth.
“I bumped into something upstairs.”
Vanessa answered before he could ask more.
“She walked into the guest-room door.”
My heart dropped.
Luca slowly turned his head.
“The guest room?”
“Yes.”
“Which one?”
Vanessa hesitated for less than a second.
“The east room.”
My chest tightened.
Luca looked back at me.
“Olivia?”
I whispered:
“Yes.”
“The east guest room?”
“Yes, sir.”
He studied me.
Then:
“Why were you in there?”
“Changing towels.”
Vanessa added:
“I asked her to freshen it.”
Luca’s eyes moved to her.
“The east room is not occupied.”
“It will be tomorrow.”
“No.”
Vanessa’s smile faltered.
He continued:
“I told Mrs. Carter to keep that room out of rotation until after the engagement weekend. The plaster by the window is still curing.”
No one at the table moved.
I gripped the platter.
Vanessa said:
“Then perhaps I confused the room.”
Luca looked at me.
“Did you?”
My eye burned.
“No.”
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Vanessa went still.
Luca said:
“You were in the east room.”
“Yes.”
“Who asked you to go there?”
Silence.
Vanessa’s fingers tightened around her glass.
I said:
“Ms. Bellini.”
Luca turned.
Vanessa laughed.
“Fine. I asked her to bring me a garment bag.”
“What garment bag?”
“A dress.”
“What dress?”
“Why does this matter?”
Luca looked at my eye.
“That’s why.”
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“She was clumsy.”
I felt heat rise in my face.
Not shame.
Anger.
Four hours earlier, she had not called me clumsy.
She had called me stupid.
Then poor.
Then replaceable.
Luca noticed something in my expression.
“Did you walk into a door?”
My throat closed.
I should have lied.
I had rehearsed it.
I was carrying towels.
The door swung back.
I slipped.
Nothing happened.
Then a drop of blood slid from the small cut near my brow.
It reached the corner of my swollen eye.
I blinked.
The tear that fell was pink.
Luca’s face changed.
Mrs. Carter appeared in the dining-room doorway.
She saw me.
“Oh my God.”
Vanessa sighed.
“It looks worse than it is.”
Mrs. Carter stared at her.
“How would you know?”
Silence.
Luca said:
“Dinner is over.”
Vanessa turned.
“Excuse me?”
“Everyone out.”
One of the guests, Adrian Cole, a venture capitalist who had spent the appetizer telling everyone how impossible it was to get a private dinner with Luca Moretti, looked almost offended.
Luca did not care.
Chairs moved.
Guests collected purses and jackets.
The quartet stopped playing.
Within ten minutes, the room emptied.
Not everyone left the property immediately.
Some lingered in foyer.
One man took a phone call near the stairs.
Another asked Mrs. Carter whether dessert could be boxed.
The absurd normalcy made my face hurt more.
Vanessa remained.
So did Mrs. Carter.
Luca moved my platter away and pulled out a chair.
“Sit.”
“I can finish.”
“No.”
I sat.
He looked at Mrs. Carter.
“Call Dr. Chen.”
Vanessa said:
“She does not need a private doctor.”
Luca’s eyes moved to her.
“You are done answering for her.”
The words were quiet.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
Then Luca crouched several feet in front of me.
Not close enough to trap.
“Olivia, what happened in the east room?”
I stared at the chandelier reflected in the polished table.
“I found something.”
“What?”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Luca.”
He stood.
“Don’t.”
She stopped.
I looked at her.
Four hours earlier, I had opened the east-room closet looking for a garment bag.
Instead I found seven leather folios.
Each labeled with a guest’s name.
Adrian Cole.
Harold Fenwick.
Maya Rosenthal.
Dr. Simon Avery.
Nolan Pierce.
Celia Trent.
Victor Sloane.
Names from tonight’s dinner.
Inside each folio:
a short biography.
a photo.
a seating target.
a list titled CONVERSATION ENTRY POINTS.
And one more line.
FEE RECEIVED.
Adrian Cole:
$18,000.
Victor Sloane:
$25,000.
Celia Trent:
$12,500.
The numbers made no sense.
Then I found envelopes.
Embossed with a company name:
BELLINI PRIVATE CIRCLE.
One card read:
Placement: Engagement Dinner, Moretti Residence.
Access tier: Principal table proximity.
Objective: Introduction to Luca Moretti and two targeted guests.
Fee: $25,000.
I had been standing there reading when Vanessa entered.
She saw the folio.
Her face changed.
“What are you doing?”
“I was looking for the garment bag.”
“Put that down.”
I did.
Then she saw that I had already read the page.
“How much did you see?”
“Nothing.”
“Don’t lie.”
She stepped closer.
I backed toward vanity.
“I wasn’t looking for anything.”
“You were reading.”
“I saw names.”
She reached for the folio.
I gave it.
Then a single card slipped out and landed near my shoe.
Placement: Engagement Dinner.
I bent to pick it up.
Vanessa bent too.
Our hands reached at same time.
I got it first.
“Give me that.”
I should have.
Instead I asked:
“People paid to be here?”
Her face went hard.
“Give it to me.”
“Does Mr. Moretti know?”
That was the sentence.
The one that changed everything.
Vanessa slapped me.
One sharp backhand.
Her diamond ring caught the skin near my eyebrow.
My head snapped sideways.
I struck the edge of the vanity with my cheek.
The world flashed white.
I remember the floor tilting.
I remember my eye watering instantly.
I remember touching my face and seeing blood on two fingers.
Vanessa froze.
For half a second, she looked horrified.
Then she looked at the card in my hand.
“Give it to me.”
I stared.
“You hit me.”
“I panicked.”
“You hit me.”
“Olivia, give me the card.”
I did not.
She pulled it from my fingers.
Then she handed me a towel.
Not gently.
Not cruelly.
Fast.
“Press this.”
I did.
My eye burned.
She said:
“You walked into the vanity.”
I looked at her.
“No.”
Her face tightened.
“You have seventy-four dollars until payday.”
My breath stopped.
“How do you know that?”
“I heard you talking to your mother last week.”
Then:
“If Luca learns you were going through private client material, you will not have a job by morning.”
Private client material.
Clients.
At Luca’s engagement dinner.
I had gone downstairs.
Washed my face.
Covered cut.
Brushed hair over eye.
And served dinner.
Now Luca stood in front of me.
Waiting.
“What did you find?”
I swallowed.
“Guest files.”
His expression changed.
“What kind of guest files?”
Vanessa said:
“Olivia.”
I looked at her.
Then at Luca.
“People paid to be here.”
No one moved.
Luca’s face became very still.
“What did you say?”
I forced myself to continue.
“There were folders with names of guests at this dinner. They listed where they should sit, who they should meet, what they should talk about.”
Mrs. Carter covered her mouth.
Luca looked at Vanessa.
Then back to me.
“And money?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
“I saw twelve thousand five hundred. Eighteen thousand. Twenty-five.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Luca turned slowly toward her.
“What is Bellini Private Circle?”
Vanessa said nothing.
The mansion felt suddenly too quiet.
Then from the foyer came a man’s voice.
Adrian Cole.
He had not left.
He was standing in the dining-room doorway.
His face had gone white.
May you like
And he said:
“Vanessa told me you knew.”
