Chapter 5

Luca hated guns pointed at people who had no power.

His father had loved them.

That difference had once made Luca proud.

Now he wondered whether being better than Victor Moretti was too low a standard.

Father Daniel stood in the hidden passage with his gun steady.

Outside, the sniper’s laser remained on Anna’s chest.

Marco’s weapon stayed raised.

No one breathed normally.

“Take the files,” Luca said.

Marco looked at him.

Daniel smiled.

“Smart.”

“No.”

Luca’s eyes remained on Daniel.

“Not smart. Necessary.”

He closed the first metal box and pushed it forward.

“Let Anna go.”

“I never wanted Anna.”

“She’s standing under a rifle.”

“Because you brought her here.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

Daniel continued.

“Power always explains harm as someone else’s choice.”

Anna looked at Luca.

He heard the truth inside the insult.

He had brought her.

He had believed he could protect her because he controlled the house.

He had been wrong before.

“Anna,” he said quietly, “walk toward the altar.”

The laser tracked her.

Daniel lifted one hand.

It vanished.

Anna moved.

Marco exhaled.

Luca pushed another box.

Daniel’s men entered through the passage and collected files.

“Where will you take them?” Luca asked.

“Somewhere safe.”

“From Hale?”

“From everyone.”

“That includes you?”

Daniel’s expression tightened.

Luca saw it.

There.

Hypocrisy.

Useful.

The last box moved.

Daniel stepped backward.

“Stay in the chapel for ten minutes.”

Luca glanced at the hidden passage.

“Where does that lead?”

“You’ll learn eventually.”

Daniel disappeared.

The wall began closing.

Marco lunged.

Too late.

Stone sealed.

Anna stared.

“Now what?”

Luca walked to the statue of Saint Michael.

He lifted it.

A cable ran beneath the base.

“What are you doing?”

“Father Daniel always overexplained symbolism.”

Marco crouched.

“Tracking wire?”

“Alarm.”

Luca pulled it.

A bell rang beneath the floor.

Then part of the altar shifted.

Another passage.

Anna blinked.

“How many secret tunnels does your family have?”

“Apparently more than healthy people.”

They entered.

The tunnel descended toward the gardens.

At the end, Marco found fresh tire tracks.

Daniel was gone.

But he left something.

A cassette recorder.

Luca pressed play.

His mother’s voice.

Years earlier.

I can’t do it.

Father Daniel answered.

Victor will kill Luca.

I know.

Then Mrs. Moretti again.

After what he did to Sofia, I should hate him.

You don’t?

He is my husband.

Luca closed his eyes.

Daniel’s younger voice continued.

He stopped being your husband when he murdered your daughter.

A sob.

Then—

Tell me what to put in the drink.

The tape ended.

Anna looked away.

Luca did not move.

His mother had lied.

Not about killing Victor.

About why.

Sofia had been part of it.

His father had destroyed his own daughter.

His mother had killed her husband.

Father Daniel had guided the murder.

The Moretti family history was not complicated.

It was poisoned.

Back at the main house, Vanessa sat in the library guarded by two of Marco’s men.

Luca entered alone.

She looked up.

“You found him.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

Vanessa studied his face.

“And now you know.”

“About Sofia.”

Her eyes softened.

For once, no performance.

“I’m sorry.”

“Did you know?”

“Not until last year.”

“How?”

“My father.”

“Of course.”

Luca sat across from her.

“Tell me what Hale wants.”

“The gold.”

“I know.”

“No. You know the story about the gold.”

“What’s the difference?”

Vanessa leaned forward.

“There is no gold.”

Luca stared.

“Hale believes there is.”

“Because Daniel made him believe it.”

Luca’s mind shifted.

A false treasure.

A lure.

“For what?”

“To bring everyone to Pier Nine.”

“Why?”

Vanessa looked toward the library door.

“Because beneath Pier Nine is something real.”

“What?”

“Bodies.”

Luca went cold.

“How many?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who?”

“People your father disappeared.”

Luca stared at her.

Vanessa continued.

“Daniel found records proving Victor used an old flood tunnel beneath the pier.”

“For bodies.”

“Yes.”

“Hale wants the site opened because he thinks the gold is there.”

“And Daniel wants it opened because he wants the bodies found.”

“Yes.”

Luca leaned back.

“Then why not expose the tunnel?”

“Because the city records show it was sealed twenty years ago. To open it legally, Daniel needs Moretti authorization.”

“My authorization.”

“Yes.”

Luca laughed bitterly.

“So everyone needs my signature.”

“Welcome to inherited power.”

He ignored that.

“Why marry me?”

Vanessa looked at him.

He waited.

She looked tired suddenly.

Not elegant.

Not sharp.

Just tired.

“At first?”

“Yes.”

“My father told me to.”

Luca expected anger.

Instead he felt emptiness.

“And later?”

“I loved you.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“You let your father use my engagement party to abduct my mother.”

“No.”

“You helped.”

“I locked your mother in the room.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

Finally.

Truth.

“Why?”

“To keep Hale away from her.”

Luca said nothing.

Vanessa continued.

“She had the ledger. My father was coming. I thought if I locked her in, I could move the records and get her out after the party.”

“Then why hurt Anna?”

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I panicked.”

“You put your hands around her neck.”

“She grabbed the key.”

“That’s your explanation?”

“No.”

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“It’s what I did.”

That was different.

No excuse.

Just admission.

Luca looked at her.

“Did you beat her before?”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Anna’s scars.

Months.

Luca’s stomach twisted.

“Why?”

“Because she saw too much.”

“And because you could.”

Vanessa did not deny it.

The door opened.

Anna entered.

She had heard.

Vanessa looked at her.

For the first time, Vanessa seemed smaller.

“Anna.”

“Don’t.”

Vanessa stopped.

Anna stood beside Luca.

Her voice was steady.

“You don’t get to apologize because you’re scared now.”

Vanessa looked down.

Anna turned to Luca.

“Your mother is asking for you.”

Mrs. Moretti lay in a guest room with a doctor beside her.

Luca sat near the bed.

She looked older.

“Daniel took the archive,” he said.

She closed her eyes.

“I knew he would.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about Sofia?”

Her lips trembled.

“Because I was ashamed.”

“Of her?”

“No.”

Tears came.

“Of myself.”

Luca said nothing.

“I knew your father was dangerous before Sofia died.”

His heart hardened.

“How long?”

“Years.”

“And you stayed.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Fear. Money. Family. Excuses.”

She looked at him.

“Pick any ugly word. I used it.”

Luca looked away.

She continued.

“When Sofia told me she was going to expose him, I begged her to wait.”

“And she died.”

“Yes.”

“You think that makes you responsible?”

“I think silence has consequences.”

Anna stood near the doorway.

Her eyes met Luca’s.

He thought about her bruises.

Silence.

Consequences.

The pattern repeated across generations because everyone powerful had a reason to wait.

Mrs. Moretti touched his hand.

“Do not become your father trying to punish the people who helped him.”

Luca looked at her.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Open Pier Nine.”

“Hale will come.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel too.”

“Yes.”

“And if there are bodies—”

“Then let them be found.”

Luca stared.

The old Moretti instinct said bury scandal.

Protect the name.

Control the story.

His mother had done that for decades.

It destroyed everyone.

He stood.

“Marco.”

The security chief entered.

“Boss.”

“Call the city.”

Mrs. Moretti’s eyes filled.

“Luca.”

“Call federal authorities too.”

Marco nodded.

“Tell them we found evidence of a suspected burial site beneath Pier Nine.”

“What about Hale?”

Luca’s expression sharpened.

“We let him hear.”

Anna frowned.

“You want him to come?”

“Yes.”

“That’s a trap.”

“Yes.”

Anna looked at him.

“Whose?”

Luca almost smiled.

“Everyone’s.”

Then the power went out.

The entire estate went black.

Emergency lights flickered.

A gunshot came from downstairs.

Marco reached for his weapon.

Luca ran into the hall.

Men shouted.

Glass broke.

Then Anna screamed.

He turned.

A figure in black pulled her through the service door.

Luca sprinted.

Too late.

The door slammed.

On the floor lay a white priest’s collar.

And a note.

PIER NINE. SUNRISE.

COME ALONE OR ANNA JOINS THE OTHERS.

That night, before the power failed, Luca walked through the staff corridor with Anna. She showed him the small supply closet where Vanessa had cornered her weeks earlier. The room was barely large enough for two people. Luca stood inside and felt something in him change. Abuse had happened ten rooms from where he signed contracts and drank espresso. Distance had never been the problem. Attention was. He told Anna he wished she had told him. She answered that people with power always say that after the danger is visible. The harder question, she said, is whether they create a place where telling feels safe before there is blood on the floor.
