Chương 2

Luca did not call Adrian Russo immediately.
Daniel wanted him to.
I could see it.
His hand was already near his phone.
Luca stopped him.
“If someone wanted us both angry, the fastest way to help them is to call angry.”
Daniel lowered the phone.
That surprised me.
I had worked for Luca nearly a year.
His temper was real.
But it was not stupidity.
He looked at the guard.
“Who called?”
“Russo’s security director. Paolo Serra.”
“What did he say exactly?”
“That Mr. Russo received an audio attachment from an anonymous account. He wants to know whether you sent it.”
“Did Paolo play it?”
“No.”
“Did he describe it?”
“He said it contains you saying tomorrow is canceled and that Russo will regret coming into your harbor.”
Luca looked at the FINAL file.
Same language.
Then:
“Tell Paolo I am reviewing a suspected fabricated recording. Ask him not to forward it, delete it, or act on it until we speak directly.”
Daniel added:
“Offer a secure line.”
Luca nodded.
The guard left.
Then Luca looked at me.
“You need to go home.”
My stomach dropped.
“No.”
He frowned.
“I mean rest.”
“I know.”
But my first thought had been fired.
That embarrassed me.
He saw something.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“Sophie.”
“I need the hours.”
His face changed slightly.
“You’re being paid.”
“For tonight?”
“For the shifts Dr. Harris restricts.”
“Written?”
Daniel looked at me.
Luca did not seem offended.
“Written.”
He called Mrs. Carter and had her arrange it.
That helped.
Then he said:
“You are not staying in a house where Vanessa may try to speak with you tonight.”
That sentence changed shape of fear.
I had been thinking:
job.
He was thinking:
contact.
Mrs. Carter drove me to my apartment.
Not security.
I asked.
The estate paid ride and medical follow-up.
At home, I sat on my couch in silence that was not silence.
My left ear rang.
My phone stayed face-down.
I did not sleep.
Back at the mansion, Luca called Adrian Russo at 11:18 p.m.
Daniel recorded only with both parties’ agreement.
No tricks.
Adrian’s first words:
“Tell me you did not send this.”
Luca answered:
“I did not.”
“How do I know?”
“You don’t.”
That was honest.
Then:
“I have what appears to be source material showing my voice cut together. My employee overheard an editor creating it this afternoon.”
A pause.
Adrian said:
“Your employee.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“Not relevant to you.”
That protected me.
Then Luca added:
“The audio editor is Ethan Cole.”
Silence.
Adrian knew name.
“How?”
Luca leaned forward.
“You know him?”
“His company handled audio at my daughter’s wedding last year.”
Daniel wrote something.
Adrian continued:
“Why would he do this?”
“I don’t know yet.”
Then:
“Vanessa Bellini was in the room.”
A longer silence.
Finally Adrian said:
“Tomorrow’s signing is off.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“Postponed?”
“Off until I know whether I am walking into a trap.”
Reasonable.
Expensive.
Then Adrian said:
“Your people do not come near my terminals tonight.”
“Agreed.”
“Mine do not come near yours.”
“Agreed.”
No retaliation.
No mobilization.
A truce before the truce.
Then:
“If this file is fake, I want proof.”
“You’ll get independent analysis.”
“If it’s real?”
“It isn’t.”
Adrian’s voice hardened.
“You just told me I don’t know.”
Luca stopped.
Then:
“If it is real, you can walk away.”
That helped.
The call ended.
Daniel exhaled.
“That could have gone worse.”
Luca looked at him.
“Find Ethan.”
Daniel said:
“Legally.”
Luca almost smiled.
“Yes, Daniel. Legally.”
That mattered.
No kidnapping sound engineer.
No back-room beating.
Daniel tried Ethan’s number.
It went straight to voicemail.
Security checked the estate’s own visitor and gate logs.
Ethan had left at 4:27.
Beyond that, they did not know where he went.
Then they examined flash drive.
Twelve files.
Four were rough cuts.
Three were alternate versions.
One was FINAL.
Two were source compilations.
One labeled ADRIAN_SEND.
One labeled BELLINI_REF.
The last folder changed motive.
Inside:
shipping projections.
not secret Moretti documents.
Bellini Logistics spreadsheets.
Daniel opened.
Bellini Logistics was Vanessa’s father’s company.
It operated drayage trucks, bonded warehouses, and a small intermodal yard near Calumet River.
The Moretti-Russo agreement would create a shared freight-management company using neutral subcontractors selected by price and safety score.
Bellini Logistics was not guaranteed a place.
For twelve years, Bellini had received substantial Moretti freight work through family relationship.
If neutral tender replaced that arrangement, Bellini could lose millions.
Was company failing?
Not obviously.
But a spreadsheet projected:
loss of 38% of Chicago revenue if Moretti work ended.
bank leverage covenant pressure.
possible sale of South Yard.
Vanessa had motive.
Family business.
Again.
But motive alone was not proof she commissioned fake audio.
The flash drive was.
Then one file named:
V_NOTE.
Daniel opened text transcript.
Not audio.
A list of clipped instructions:
More menace.
No shouting.
Use the calm clips.
Adrian distrusts theatrical threats.
Mention the harbor.
Keep the wording indirect.
Luca stared.
The instructions sounded like Vanessa’s priorities, but the file itself did not prove who had dictated them.
Its metadata showed only that it had been created on Ethan’s system.
That was not enough by itself.
Then BELLINI_REF contained one voice memo.
Vanessa’s voice.
Clear.
“Ethan, the important thing is that Adrian believes Luca is trying to scare him away from signing without admitting that directly. If it sounds like a movie, it fails. Use Luca calm.”
Daniel stopped.
No one spoke.
Luca closed eyes.
There it was.
Then another memo.
“I need it before Thursday. My father cannot know I’m doing this.”
That mattered too.
Nothing on the drive showed Carlo Bellini had authorized the project.
Then Daniel found a payment invoice.
Ethan Cole Media.
Private editing consultation.
$18,000.
Paid from Vanessa’s personal account.
Not Bellini corporate.
Motive tied to family company.
Act personal.
Then why Ethan?
He needed money.
Maybe.
But there was more.
His name had appeared in another file:
BELLINI_ARCHIVE.
Folders containing years of event audio from Bellini family functions.
Not Luca’s phone messages.
But enough ambient recordings where Luca spoke.
How did Ethan get them?
He had recorded weddings, galas, holiday videos, speeches.
Vanessa had supplied her personal messages too.
Together, they had a library.
Then the dangerous part:
some source clips came from Moretti house intercom archive.
Daniel froze.
“What?”
A file path included:
MR_EST_INTERCOM_2025.
House intercom.
Not accessible to Vanessa directly.
“Who exported this?”
Daniel asked.
Luca looked at him.
“You tell me.”
The intercom vendor had upgraded system seven months earlier.
A contractor called SoundCore Residential.
Ethan Cole had subcontracted commissioning.
That was the point.
He had legitimate access once.
Had he retained recordings improperly?
Possibly.
Now mystery widened.
Was Ethan only paid editor?
Or had he been collecting audio before Vanessa asked?
Daniel called SoundCore.
Emergency contact answered.
They confirmed Ethan Cole had been freelance commissioning engineer on Moretti project.
He was authorized to test recording channels during installation.
He was not authorized to retain recordings after handoff.
Now there was separate misconduct.
Not necessarily Vanessa’s idea.
Then Carlo Bellini called Luca at 12:03 a.m.
“Why did Adrian Russo just postpone tomorrow?”
Luca said nothing for a second.
How did Carlo know?
Business circles.
Adrian had called his freight director.
News moved.
Luca said:
“Ask your daughter.”
Carlo’s silence changed.
“What happened?”
Luca did not accuse beyond proof.
“She paid an audio editor to fabricate a recording using my voice. It was sent to Adrian.”
Carlo said:
“No.”
Not denial.
Shock.
Luca continued:
“There are Bellini Logistics projections on the editor’s drive.”
Carlo went quiet.
Then:
“Do not send those to anyone.”
“They are already evidence.”
“Evidence of what?”
“Your daughter’s motive, maybe.”
Carlo exhaled.
“Luca, Bellini is under pressure.”
“I know.”
“That does not mean I asked her to do this.”
“I did not say you did.”
That precision prevented war from spreading.
Then Carlo said:
“Where is Vanessa?”
“Upstairs.”
“At your house?”
“Yes.”
“Put her on.”
“No.”
“Luca.”
“She has counsel?”
“Why would she—”
“Because she should.”
That ended call.
Then Luca finally went upstairs.
Vanessa was in the sitting room.
Still dressed for dinner.
No ring removed yet.
She looked at him.
“Adrian postponed.”
It was not a question.
Luca said:
“You know already.”
Her face barely moved.
Then he put his phone on table and played her voice memo from flash drive.
Ethan, the important thing is that Adrian believes Luca is trying to scare him away from signing...
Vanessa went white.
For one second she looked toward doorway.
Then:
“Where did you get that?”
Luca stared.
Not:
Did you do it?
Where did you get it.
He had answer.
“The drive Sophie picked up after you shoved her into an equipment cabinet.”
Vanessa closed eyes.
Then:
“She was eavesdropping.”
Luca’s voice lowered.
“She cannot hear properly tonight.”
“I didn’t mean—”
“Stop.”
She did.
Then he asked:
“Was the file sent to Adrian by you?”
“No.”
“Did you ask Ethan to create it?”
Silence.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Her eyes filled.
“Because you were about to destroy my father’s company.”
And there it was.
Not love.
Not jealousy.
Not revenge.
Fear wearing a business suit.
Luca asked:
“How?”
“Neutral bidding kills Bellini.”
“Bellini can compete.”
“You know they can’t match Russo carriers on scale.”
“Then your father restructures.”
“He loses South Yard.”
“That is his business.”
“It is my family.”
Luca stared.
“So you manufactured a threat in my voice.”
“I needed Adrian to walk away.”
“What did you think would happen after he heard it?”
“He’d postpone.”
“He might have retaliated.”
“I told Ethan no direct violence.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“You thought wording could control a man’s reaction?”
Vanessa looked down.
Then:
“I thought I could stop the signing without hurting anyone.”
From across the hall, Daniel heard that sentence.
Later he would say it was the moment he understood the whole scheme.
