Chapter 7 - THE BABY MONITOR

The baby monitor had recorded everything.

Not video.

Audio.

That was enough.

When resort staff found it in the service stairwell, they assumed it had been dropped there after the incident.

Gavin told police he moved it.

What he did not know was that the parent unit stored short audio clips whenever sound exceeded a certain level.

Crying.

Shouting.

Doors slamming.

The monitor had been in the nursery most of the morning.

Detective Collins brought Daniel into a small resort office.

Jonathan Pike joined by video from the city.

Emma sat outside with Lily.

Vanessa’s attorney had been notified.

“Before we play this,” Collins said, “understand that timestamps are approximate. We’re matching them to network logs.”

Daniel nodded.

“Play it.”

The first clip was ordinary.

Lily babbling.

Emma singing.

Vanessa entering.

Her voice:

“Can you take the bottles downstairs?”

Emma:

“They’re already made.”

Vanessa:

“Then check the laundry. I need a minute with her.”

Emma:

“Okay.”

Door.

Silence.

Daniel closed his eyes.

The next clip.

A phone ringing.

Vanessa:

“Hello?”

A male voice.

Julian.

“You need to stop.”

Vanessa:

“Not now.”

Julian:

“I mean it. Sell the chalet. Take the loss.”

Vanessa:

“And tell Daniel we stole from Lily?”

Julian:

“We borrowed.”

Vanessa laughed.

Even through low-quality audio, the sound carried bitterness.

“You keep saying that like it changes what we did.”

Julian:

“It changes what I intended.”

Vanessa:

“Intent won’t matter.”

Daniel looked at Collins.

She wrote nothing.

She was simply listening.

Julian:

“Then tell him before Emma does.”

Vanessa:

“You don’t know Daniel.”

Julian:

“I’ve known him longer than you.”

A pause.

Vanessa:

“That’s why you should understand. Once he decides I lied about Lily’s money, he will never trust me again.”

Julian:

“He shouldn’t.”

Silence.

Daniel felt something unexpected.

Julian had said it.

Not well enough.

Not early enough.

But he had.

Vanessa’s voice changed.

“I am not losing my marriage because some nanny opened the wrong drawer.”

Julian:

“Then fire her.”

Vanessa:

“She’ll go straight to him.”

Julian:

“Pay severance.”

Vanessa:

“You think she wants money?”

Julian:

“What do you think she wants?”

Vanessa:

“To be me.”

Daniel opened his eyes.

There it was.

The obsession.

Not merely strategy.

Vanessa genuinely believed Emma’s care for Lily was an invasion.

Julian sighed.

“Vanessa, this is not about Emma.”

“It is now.”

The clip ended.

The next began at 10:22 a.m.

Another male voice.

Gavin.

“You asked for seven minutes. That is all I can give you.”

Vanessa:

“Which camera?”

Gavin:

“Upper hall. Exterior stays on.”

Vanessa:

“Why?”

“Because if exterior goes dark, security gets an alert.”

Vanessa:

“Can we angle it?”

Gavin:

“No.”

Vanessa:

“Then what does it see?”

Gavin:

“The wall. Window. Snowbank.”

A pause.

Vanessa:

“That’s fine.”

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

She knew.

She knew the exterior camera existed.

Not only existed.

She knew its view.

Gavin:

“Vanessa, I want to be clear. You told me this is a staged nanny complaint.”

Vanessa:

“It is.”

Gavin:

“No one gets hurt.”

Vanessa:

“No one gets hurt.”

Gavin:

“I’m serious.”

Vanessa:

“So am I.”

Daniel looked away.

Those words had not protected anyone.

The next clip was 10:47.

A scraping sound.

Metal.

Vanessa breathing.

Then Gavin:

“What are you doing?”

Vanessa:

“Testing it.”

Gavin:

“Put that away.”

Daniel felt cold.

Vanessa:

“The brake sticks.”

Gavin:

“Good.”

Vanessa:

“No. If it stops too soon, Emma won’t have to catch anything.”

Silence.

Gavin:

“You said near miss.”

Vanessa:

“It still will be.”

Gavin:

“What did you just cut?”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Vanessa:

“Nothing.”

Gavin:

“Give me the knife.”

Vanessa:

“Leave.”

Gavin:

“Vanessa.”

Vanessa:

“Get out.”

The clip ended.

Daniel stared at the speaker.

Jonathan’s voice came through the laptop.

“That is significant.”

Daniel almost laughed.

Significant.

A lawyer’s word for hearing your wife tamper with the device holding your child.

Detective Collins continued.

“There’s more.”

Daniel did not want more.

He nodded anyway.

11:37.

Lily crying.

Vanessa:

“Shh. Shh. Mommy’s here.”

The sound of the carrier wheels.

Then Vanessa speaking very quietly.

“You always choose what’s helpless.”

Daniel frowned.

Was she talking to Lily?

Another sound.

Phone keypad.

Then Vanessa:

“Emma?”

No answer.

She was leaving a voice message or practicing.

“You cannot keep acting like Lily belongs to you.”

Pause.

“No.”

Again.

“Emma, what did you do?”

Daniel felt his skin crawl.

She was rehearsing.

Vanessa tried again.

“Oh my God, Emma, what did you do?”

Then again.

Louder.

“Emma!”

Daniel stood and walked away from the table.

Collins paused the recording.

“No.”

Daniel put both hands against the wall.

For a moment he could not breathe.

She had rehearsed the accusation.

Not after panic.

Before.

Jonathan said softly through the laptop, “Daniel.”

He closed his eyes.

“I’m fine.”

He was not.

But he returned to the table.

“Play it.”

11:41.

Vanessa on the phone.

Julian.

Julian:

“I’m in the stairwell.”

Vanessa:

“I know.”

Julian:

“Don’t do this.”

Vanessa:

“You helped me get here.”

Julian:

“And I’m telling you stop.”

Vanessa:

“Too late.”

Julian:

“It is not too late until you touch that window.”

Vanessa:

“She saw the transfer.”

Julian:

“So what?”

Vanessa:

“So Daniel will look at me the way you are looking at me.”

Julian:

“Maybe he should.”

Silence.

Vanessa’s breathing.

Then:

“You loved me.”

Julian:

“That is not a reason to do this.”

Vanessa:

“No. It’s the reason you’re going to stay quiet.”

The call ended.

11:42.

Phone tapping.

Emma’s text sent.

11:43.

Window latch.

Wind.

Lily fussing.

Vanessa whispering:

“Just catch her.”

Daniel’s throat closed.

Again:

“Just catch her.”

Then wheels.

A small metallic click.

Vanessa’s breathing quickened.

Outside, faintly, Emma shouted something.

Vanessa whispered:

“Now.”

A terrible scrape.

Then nothing.

No crying.

No voice.

Just wind.

Five seconds later, Vanessa screamed.

Not “Lily.”

Not “help.”

She screamed:

“Emma!”

The monitor clip ended.

Daniel sat absolutely still.

She had rehearsed the name.

Then used it.

The accusation came before she knew whether Lily was safe.

Daniel felt sick.

Detective Collins switched off the recorder.

“That supports charges beyond simple negligence.”

Jonathan asked, “Has the prosecutor heard this?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked at Collins.

“What happens to Vanessa?”

“I can’t promise an outcome.”

“Will she be arrested?”

“Likely today.”

He looked toward the door.

Emma sat beyond it with Lily.

“Can I tell Emma?”

“You can tell her the audio confirms her account.”

Daniel stepped into the hall.

Emma stood as soon as she saw him.

“What happened?”

Daniel looked at Lily.

His daughter was awake, chewing on the corner of a soft toy.

He could not say the words in front of her.

So he took Emma aside.

“The monitor recorded Vanessa.”

Emma’s eyes widened.

“What did it record?”

“She knew the camera angle. She cut the carrier brake.”

Emma covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“She rehearsed what she was going to say.”

Emma’s face crumpled.

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

“She said my name?”

“Yes.”

Emma turned away.

For a moment Daniel thought she might collapse.

Then she straightened.

“Why?”

Daniel answered honestly.

“Because you saw the money.”

Emma shook her head.

“That can’t be enough.”

“No.”

“What?”

“It wasn’t just the money.”

Daniel thought of Vanessa’s voice.

You always choose what’s helpless.

“She believed you were taking something from her.”

Emma looked confused.

“What?”

“Lily.”

Emma stared.

“I never—”

“I know.”

“I never wanted—”

“I know.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“She is Lily’s mother.”

“I know.”

Emma whispered, “Then why would she risk her?”

Daniel had no answer that made sense.

Maybe because people could love and still become dangerous.

Maybe because Vanessa’s need to control the story became larger than the fear of consequences.

Maybe because she had convinced herself there was no real risk.

Maybe because resentment had distorted every relationship until even a baby’s safety became part of an argument.

Daniel did not know.

At 2:10 p.m., police arrested Vanessa Reed.

She was taken from the resort through a private service entrance to avoid the growing press outside.

Daniel did not watch.

At 2:26, his phone rang.

His mother.

He answered.

“They arrested her,” Daniel said.

His mother was silent.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

He almost said, For what?

Then he understood.

Not for Vanessa.

For him.

For Lily.

For the family Daniel thought he had.

“Thanks.”

His mother continued.

“Rosa called me.”

Daniel looked up.

“What did she say?”

“She remembered something.”

“What?”

“The bracelet.”

Daniel frowned.

The old accusation.

“What about it?”

“Vanessa did not act alone.”

Daniel felt cold.

“Julian?”

“No.”

His mother’s voice trembled.

“Gavin.”

Daniel stopped.

“What?”

“Rosa says Gavin was at my house that day.”

Daniel searched his memory.

A barbecue.

Resort not relevant.

Why would Gavin have been there?

“He was doing catering setup,” his mother said. “Temporary event work.”

Daniel stared.

Before the resort job.

Before Residence 18.

Before the White Summit plan became visible.

“What did he do?”

“Rosa saw him put the bracelet in the gym bag.”

Daniel felt the story shift again.

Gavin had helped Vanessa frame someone before.

Not just recently.

A year earlier.

Maybe longer.

This was not a one-time favor.

He had experience creating evidence.

Daniel called Detective Collins immediately.

She listened.

Then said, “We need to revisit Gavin’s statement.”

“Do it.”

“We will.”

Daniel ended the call.

His phone buzzed with a resort security alert forwarded by Paul Mercer.

A camera had detected motion at Residence 18.

Police had sealed the property.

No one was supposed to be inside.

Daniel opened the still image.

A figure in a hood stood in the upstairs study.

Not Gavin.

He was in custody.

Not Julian.

Hospital.

Not Vanessa.

Arrested.

The figure turned slightly toward the camera.

Daniel zoomed in.

A woman.

Older.

Silver hair.

He knew her.

Vanessa’s mother.

Diane Whitmore.

Daniel stared.

Diane had told everyone she was in Florida.

Yet there she was, inside the chalet purchased with Lily’s missing money.

And in her hands was a box labeled:
