Chapter 5

VIVIAN’S VERSION

Sofia met Vivian six weeks later.

Not at Crane House.

Not alone.

Catherine came.

Mara came.

Richard did not.

Sofia wanted no audience from the person most affected by Vivian’s lies.

That sentence mattered.

Vivian chose a quiet attorney’s conference room.

No lawyers during conversation, but nearby.

Sofia arrived first.

Vivian entered.

She looked smaller.

Not poor.

Not ruined.

Just less armored.

Sofia did not stand.

Vivian sat.

Neither spoke for almost a minute.

Then Vivian said:

“I am sorry.”

Sofia raised hand.

“No.”

Vivian stopped.

“Answer first.”

“Okay.”

“Did you forge Dad’s letter?”

Vivian looked down.

“I used an old signed note and had his assistant type the message above a copied signature.”

There.

Not vague.

“Who helped?”

“His former assistant, Elaine.”

“Did she know?”

“She knew I said Richard wanted the message sent.”

“Did she know it was false?”

“I don’t know.”

Sofia stared.

“Find out.”

Vivian nodded.

Then:

“Did you tell me Dad was upstairs and refused to see me?”

“Yes.”

“He was in Boston.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know?”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell Catherine I had left voluntarily?”

“Yes.”

“Did you block her call?”

“Yes.”

“Did you take my phone?”

“Yes.”

“Did you threaten Julian?”

Vivian looked.

“I told him security would remove him from the property if he came back.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Vivian swallowed.

“I told you I would call police and say he was trespassing if he returned.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Did you tell Dad I emptied my savings account?”

Vivian said:

“You did withdraw some money.”

“My money.”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Eight thousand.”

“Not everything.”

“No.”

“Why say everything?”

“To make leaving look planned.”

There.

Then:

“Did you intercept mail?”

“Yes.”

“All?”

“No.”

“Which?”

“Anything staff recognized as yours after I gave instructions.”

“How long?”

“Years.”

Sofia’s jaw tightened.

Then:

“Did Dad ever tell you he wanted no contact?”

“No.”

Good.

Then:

“Did you ever tell him I had Noah?”

“No.”

“Elena?”

“No.”

“Julian died?”

“No.”

Sofia closed eyes.

Then:

“Why?”

Vivian cried.

“Because every year made the first night harder to confess.”

Sofia stared.

“That explains continuation. Not beginning.”

Vivian nodded.

The beginning.

Why push pregnant nineteen-year-old out?

Vivian took time.

Then:

“I thought you would destroy Richard’s life.”

Sofia almost laughed.

“By being pregnant?”

“By forcing him to choose.”

“Between?”

“You and the future he wanted for the family.”

“What future?”

Vivian struggled.

Sofia answered for her:

“One where Julian Bell was not at Christmas.”

Vivian looked ashamed.

“Yes.”

Class.

Respectability.

Control.

Then:

“You thought a chauffeur’s son embarrassed you.”

“Yes.”

“Dad did too.”

“Yes.”

Sofia nodded.

At least.

Then Vivian said:

“But Richard would have come around.”

Sofia stared.

“Then why not let him?”

Vivian had no answer.

That was core.

She did not trust Richard’s choice.

She wanted outcome.

Then:

“I was jealous too.”

Sofia blinked.

“Of me?”

Vivian looked.

“You were Anna’s daughter.”

There.

Richard’s first wife.

Sofia’s mother.

Vivian had married into a house still full of Anna.

Photos.

Music.

Traditions.

Sofia looked like her.

Resisted Vivian.

Vivian tried to become necessary.

Then Sofia got pregnant and Richard’s attention centered her.

Vivian panicked.

Not romantic jealousy.

Family position.

She feared she would forever be second wife in Anna’s house.

Sofia said:

“So you removed me.”

“Yes.”

Brutal.

Then:

“Did Dad know you felt that way?”

“No.”

“Of course.”

Then Sofia asked:

“Did you love me?”

Vivian started crying harder.

“Yes.”

Sofia’s face twisted.

“Don’t.”

“I did.”

“You do not get to use that as defense.”

“I’m not.”

Good.

Then:

“I taught you to drive. I sat with you after your mother died. I knew which tea you drank when sick.”

Sofia’s eyes filled.

That was true.

Vivian had not always been monster.

That made betrayal worse.

Then:

“I loved you and chose myself.”

Specific.

Sofia looked away.

Catherine cried silently.

Mara stayed still.

Then Sofia:

“Did you ever read the tape?”

“No.”

“Open box?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I knew you had hidden something.”

“So?”

“If I opened and found proof, I would have to decide again.”

Sofia laughed in disbelief.

“You protected yourself from evidence.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Did you know Elena had the key?”

“No.”

“Did you know I planned to contact Dad?”

“No.”

Good.

No omniscience.

Then Sofia asked:

“What do you want now?”

Vivian looked surprised.

“Forgiveness.”

Sofia nodded.

“Of course.”

Then:

“What else?”

“A chance to know Noah and Elena.”

Sofia’s face hardened.

“No.”

Vivian closed eyes.

“Not now?”

“I said no.”

Silence.

Then Vivian nodded.

“Okay.”

That mattered.

No bargaining.

Then:

“Can I write them letters?”

“No.”

“Can I leave something for later?”

Sofia thought.

“With Mara. Sealed. They choose when older.”

“Okay.”

Then:

“Can I ever ask again?”

Sofia looked.

“In a year.”

Specific.

Vivian nodded.

Then apology.

Sofia allowed now.

Vivian said:

“I am sorry I lied to you about your father.”

Then:

“I am sorry I used his flaws to make my lie believable.”

Good.

Then:

“I am sorry I made your pregnancy feel like a threat.”

Then:

“I am sorry I kept your children from their grandfather.”

Then:

“I am sorry I chose the shape of the family I wanted over the family that existed.”

Sofia cried.

No hug.

Then:

“I am sorry I made you question your own memory.”

That line hit deepest.

Sofia had carried timeline for proof.

Years of wondering.

She whispered:

“Yes.”

Then she stood.

Meeting over.

Vivian did not stop.

At door Sofia turned.

“One thing.”

Vivian looked.

“My mother’s music box.”

“Yes.”

“You told Dad to keep it locked?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I was afraid of what was inside.”

Sofia stared.

“Good.”

Then left.

Not forgiveness.

Not revenge.

A fact.

Vivian’s version of family required every person to fit the arrangement that made her feel secure.

Sofia’s adult life had taught opposite.

Families survive when people are allowed to be inconveniently real.
