Chapter 9

SOFIA COMES HOME
Sofia returned to Crane House three years after Elena found the key.
Not moved back.
Visited.
That distinction mattered.
Richard did not invite first.
Elena did.
She wanted to see the room where her mother grew up.
Sofia hesitated for weeks.
Then said:
“Okay.”
Saturday.
No extended family.
No Vivian.
Just Richard, Sofia, Noah, Elena, Mara, and Catherine for lunch later.
When car pulled through gates, Sofia stopped talking.
Crane House looked almost same.
Stone.
Ivy.
Long windows.
Richard watched from front steps.
He almost walked down.
Stopped.
Let Sofia come.
She stepped out.
Looked.
“Smaller.”
Richard laughed.
“Everything is.”
Then Sofia touched doorframe.
Elena ran inside.
“Which room?”
Sofia laughed.
“Shoes.”
Normal motherhood saved moment.
Then upstairs.
Sofia’s old bedroom had changed.
Richard had not kept shrine.
After she left, it became guest room.
Years later, he moved some of her things to storage.
Sofia appreciated.
“No creepy museum.”
“I considered.”
“I’m sure.”
Then music room.
Piano.
Same.
She sat.
Touched one key.
Then another.
Richard stood door.
“Want privacy?”
Sofia looked.
“No.”
She played Clair de Lune.
Not music box.
Full piano.
Richard cried quietly.
Elena lay under piano.
Noah leaned wall.
When Sofia finished, silence.
Then Elena:
“Again.”
Sofia laughed.
“No.”
Good.
Then study.
Music box on desk.
Unlocked.
Original key with Elena.
Duplicate Richard.
Sofia opened without asking? It had been hers, but in Richard study. She looked at him.
“May I?”
“Yes.”
Good.
She removed cassette.
“Do you still have copy?”
“Yes.”
“Destroy your digital copy.”
Richard stopped.
“Okay.”
Why?
“The tape did its job.”
He nodded.
Original?
Sofia thought.
“Keep until I decide.”
Okay.
Then letters.
She took originals addressed to her? They were hers written by her. She chose to take Catherine's? The letters were from Sofia to others, so originals could be hers or recipients. Let's not overdo.
She took timeline sheet.
Why?
“I want it.”
Richard handed.
No copy? He had scan.
She said:
“Delete scan too.”
He agreed.
Evidence no longer needed.
He had publicly corrected family? Private. Vivian admitted. Fine.
Then Richard asked:
“Does deleting feel like losing proof?”
Sofia paused.
“Not anymore.”
There.
For years she needed documents to trust herself.
Now others knew.
She could own memory without file.
Then basement storage.
Boxes of Sofia things.
School certificates.
Sheet music.
Trophies.
A yellow coat.
She laughed.
“Why keep this?”
Richard:
“Because I am bad at throwing away.”
She took few.
Left most.
No inheritance obligation.
Then one box labeled ANNA.
Her mother.
Sofia froze.
Richard said:
“That one is yours if you want.”
Inside:
Anna’s recipes.
Photographs.
Letters.
Concert programs.
No Vivian involvement.
Sofia sat floor.
Cried.
Elena asked:
“Who?”
“Your grandma Anna.”
Another grandmother she never met.
Sofia showed.
No competition.
Then lunch.
Catherine arrived.
Mara.
Bread basket.
Elena took three rolls.
Everyone laughed.
“Why are you laughing?”
Mara:
“Nothing.”
No retelling origin every meal.
Then family portrait wall.
Gap after Sofia eighteen.
Richard had not added.
Sofia stared.
Then:
“Do you want a new picture?”
Richard careful.
“Only if you do.”
Sofia looked at Noah and Elena.
Then Mara.
Maybe.
They took one that afternoon.
Not formal.
Catherine with phone.
Richard.
Sofia.
Noah.
Elena.
Mara? Mara was family by care; Sofia said get in.
Catherine too.
No Vivian.
Was that cruel? Vivian not invited to house per Sofia boundaries. Fine.
The photo went to Richard’s apartment? Sofia approved one frame at Crane House.
No caption.
No “reunited.”
Then Vivian heard.
She did not complain.
Progress.
Then public status.
Richard Crane’s daughter no longer “missing,” but was she public figure? A society publication noticed Sofia at Crane House? No need. Keep private.
Company people eventually learned.
Richard’s assistant updated emergency contacts.
That was all.
Sofia did not join Crane Enterprises.
Richard offered no board seat.
Good.
Then she did accept one thing.
Crane Arts Foundation? We haven't established. Could avoid.
Richard funded scholarships at community arts center? He asked Sofia. She said public donation okay if no name. They created general tuition assistance through center, not family tie.
No job.
Then Noah at seventeen.
He wanted engineering school.
Julian path.
Richard offered tuition.
Noah said:
“I have scholarship applications.”
“Good.”
Then:
“If there is gap, I’ll cover.”
Noah:
“Without making me work hotel?”
“Yes.”
“Without name?”
“Yes.”
Noah:
“Fine.”
Practical.
Then Elena at eleven.
Still wore brass key sometimes.
Chain replaced.
She no longer understood it as dramatic.
It was just necklace.
One day friend asked.
“Old key.”
“To what?”
“Music box.”
That was all.
Good.
Then Sofia and Vivian.
After three years, they had occasional supervised? Adult doesn't need supervised. They met twice a year maybe.
Relationship limited.
Vivian respected.
One day Sofia invited her to piano recital.
Not children event, Sofia's own first solo community concert in years.
Vivian came.
Sat back.
Richard also.
Separate rows? Sofia said both can sit where assigned.
They ended adjacent by chance.
Awkward.
Music.
After, Vivian said:
“You were beautiful.”
Sofia:
“The music.”
“You too.”
Sofia accepted.
Then Richard said:
“Your mother would’ve loved it.”
Sofia nodded.
No one argued.
Then Crane House decision.
Richard was aging.
House too large.
He considered selling.
Family assumed Sofia might want.
He asked.
“No.”
Immediate.
No nostalgia trap.
Noah no.
Elena no.
Catherine no.
So Richard sold Crane House.
To a family not connected.
That mattered.
Before closing, Sofia walked once.
Took Anna box.
Her childhood piano bench? She wanted.
Music box?
Still no.
Richard moved to smaller townhouse.
Music box moved with him.
No estate.
No dynasty shrine.
On closing day, Richard handed keys to buyer.
He felt sad.
Then relieved.
Sofia said:
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“I kept thinking this house was where family happened.”
Sofia looked.
“Family happened despite it too.”
True.
Sofia came home.
Then chose not to keep home.
That was perhaps healthier.
The building where she had been pushed out did not need to remain in family forever for the truth to stay corrected.
