Chapter 2

Julian spent the night beside Eli’s hospital crib.

He did not sleep.

Every time the baby shifted, Julian stood.

Every time a monitor beeped, his body locked.

The pediatric trauma team repeated the same facts.

No skull fracture.

No internal bleeding.

No spinal injury detected.

Bruising along shoulder and back.

Observation.

Follow-up.

A miracle, one doctor said.

Julian hated the word.

Miracle made the event sound as if no human decisions mattered.

Marcus had run.

Marcus had positioned.

Marcus had absorbed impact.

The grass helped.

Luck helped.

But the baby had been thrown by a person.

Julian could not spiritualize that.

At six a.m., Detective Rosa Alvarez arrived with another detective, Jonah Pierce.

They waited until Eli was asleep.

Then sat with Julian in consultation room.

“We need to talk about Monica.”

Julian’s stomach tightened.

“Is she arrested?”

“Held pending formal charging review.”

“For attempted murder?”

“We don’t make charging decisions alone.”

Julian hated precision until he remembered he needed it.

“What do you know?”

Alvarez opened notebook.

“We recovered message thread from Monica’s phone through unlocked notification state before device went into forensic isolation.”

Not full contents yet.

Enough.

The message Mrs. Bell saw came from Gavin Reese.

Timestamp:

4:41 p.m.

Once the baby is gone, meet me at the airport.

Tickets attached.

Flight at 10:55 p.m.

Julian looked at clock.

The fall happened around 5:07.

Twenty-six minutes later.

“What did she answer?”

Alvarez looked at him.

“Done soon.”

Julian closed eyes.

Then:

“What else?”

“Earlier messages suggest she and Mr. Reese had a personal relationship.”

Julian felt nothing at first.

Then a strange laugh escaped.

“Personal.”

“We have not independently verified how long.”

“Just say affair.”

Alvarez did not.

Good.

Facts.

Then financial records.

Gavin Reese had served as outside financial consultant to Julian’s property-management company, Hale Residential Group.

He advised on refinancing, vendor consolidation, and a charitable housing fund.

Julian trusted him.

Gavin was charming.

Low ego.

Always prepared.

He had attended Eli’s christening.

Brought a wooden toy train.

Julian felt nausea.

Alvarez continued.

“We have reason to believe Mr. Reese transferred company funds to entities connected to him.”

“How much?”

“Preliminary. At least 2.8 million.”

Julian stared.

“Impossible.”

“Why?”

“I would know.”

Even as he said it, he knew how arrogant it sounded.

He signed hundreds of payments.

Delegated.

Relied on controller and Gavin.

Maybe he would not know.

“Which entities?”

“Blue Meridian Services. Harbor Child Logistics. Costa Vida Advisory.”

The second name made Julian look up.

“Child?”

“Probably just shell naming. We don’t know.”

Do not infer.

Good.

Then Alvarez asked:

“Did Monica have access to company accounts?”

“No.”

“Company card?”

“Yes, household-related events sometimes.”

“Foundation?”

“Yes. She chaired the family housing foundation.”

There.

A bridge.

Charitable fund.

Gavin advised.

Potential access.

Then one transaction.

$450,000 from Hale Housing Foundation to Blue Meridian for “emergency relocation services.”

Julian had approved budget category, not invoice.

Monica signed vendor authorization.

Gavin approved consultant review.

Money moved.

No actual services documented yet.

Julian’s hands shook.

“So she was stealing with him.”

“We are investigating.”

Right.

Then personal messages.

Monica:

I can’t keep living two lives.

Gavin:

Then stop.

Monica:

Julian will never let me leave with Eli.

Gavin:

You don’t want Eli with us.

Monica:

Don’t say that.

Gavin:

You say it every time you refuse to book.

Julian stared at wall.

Monica had said?

Every time?

Alvarez continued.

Monica:

He is my son.

Gavin:

He is the chain.

Julian’s face twisted.

No.

Then days later.

Gavin:

We leave Friday. No delays.

Monica:

I can’t take him.

Gavin:

Then don’t.

Ambiguous.

Then:

Monica:

What are you asking me to do?

Gavin:

I’m asking you to choose the life you keep saying you want.

Not explicit murder.

Yet.

Then yesterday morning.

Monica:

Mrs Bell is always outside.

Gavin:

Then wait until she goes in.

Monica:

She watches everything.

Gavin:

You only need one minute.

Julian stopped breathing.

There.

Planning around witness.

Then Monica:

I hate you.

Gavin:

No, you hate the choice.

The detectives let silence sit.

Julian asked:

“Did he tell her to throw Eli?”

“We have not found that exact instruction.”

“But he knew.”

“Evidence suggests he knew she planned something involving Eli and timing before flight. We’re still determining specifics.”

Julian nodded.

Specifics matter.

Even now.

Then one final message, twenty minutes before fall.

Gavin:

No baby. No custody fight. No reason to stay.

Julian stood.

Chair fell.

Alvarez did not touch him.

“Sit if you can.”

Julian walked to wall.

No baby.

A phrase.

As if Eli were luggage.

An obstacle.

A legal problem.

Then Julian turned.

“Where is Gavin?”

“Unknown.”

“Find him.”

“We are.”

“You think he sent Marcus that text?”

Alvarez’s face changed.

“You know about that?”

“Marcus called me after police.”

She nodded.

“We are tracing.”

The bribe message came through internet number.

Amount $250,000.

That amount mattered.

One of Gavin’s shell accounts had exactly $263,400 left after large transfers.

Possible.

Not proof.

Then Julian asked:

“What does Monica say?”

“She has counsel. Limited statement.”

“What statement?”

Alvarez hesitated.

“She says Eli fell.”

Still.

Despite witnesses.

Despite messages.

“She says Mrs. Bell grabbed her and Eli slipped.”

Julian stared.

Evelyn grabbed Monica’s sleeve.

Could defense claim accident during struggle?

Marcus saw hands open.

Evelyn saw hands open.

But physical sequence matters.

Balcony video?

Building had no balcony cameras.

Courtyard camera.

Yes.

Mounted over lobby.

Did it capture fall?

Partially.

Wide angle.

Baby falling.

Marcus running.

Not fourth-floor railing due angle.

No direct release.

Then neighbors.

Three heard shouting.

One saw Monica holding Eli but turned before release.

Two saw after.

Marcus and Evelyn strongest.

Julian suddenly understood why Gavin wanted Marcus to change statement.

Without Marcus, defense could attack Evelyn as elderly neighbor who grabbed Monica.

With Marcus, independent stranger saw deliberate release.

Marcus mattered.

That made him target.

Julian said:

“You need to protect him.”

Alvarez nodded.

“We’ve advised.”

Then hospital social worker.

Because Eli’s mother accused.

Temporary safety plan.

Julian sole bedside access.

Monica no contact pending court.

Emergency family court hearing.

Julian hated that he needed paperwork to keep the woman who threw Eli away from him.

But law could not run on his certainty alone.

Good.

Then his attorney.

Family lawyer Dana Brooks? We used Dana. Choose Rachel Foster.

Rachel Foster arrived.

She reviewed.

Temporary no-contact likely.

Custody petition.

Passport alert because Monica planned flight.

No need seek permanent termination now.

Julian wanted everything.

“No visitation ever.”

Rachel said:

“You may feel that. Court decides based on evidence and future safety.”

“She threw him.”

“Yes.”

“Why are we talking future safety?”

“Because I am your lawyer, not your anger.”

Julian almost fired her.

Then didn’t.

Good.

Then Julian called his sister Camille.

She came.

Sat with Eli.

Julian showered.

First time since.

In bathroom, he saw his hands shaking.

He thought of Monica during pregnancy.

The nursery paint.

The way she slept with one hand on her stomach.

Her crying at Eli’s first vaccine.

Her singing badly.

How could same person stand over balcony?

He wanted one explanation.

Affair.

Money.

Mental break.

Evil.

Anything.

But messages showed weeks of conversation.

Planning.

Conflict.

Not one moment.

Then Camille found something in diaper bag.

Not secret.

A receipt.

Airport parking prepaid under Monica’s name.

Three days.

Why parking if taking rideshare? Maybe Monica planned drive.

Then baby formula receipt from that morning? She bought formula, which complicates. Wait suitcase had no baby supplies. She may have still cared routine until plan. Fine.

More important: a storage-unit key on Monica’s key ring.

Julian did not recognize.

Police took.

Search warrant later.

Storage unit held:

two suitcases.

cash $180,000.

foreign currency.

copies of company bank statements.

three phones.

a framed photo of Monica and Gavin on beach dated eight months earlier.

Eli was six months.

Affair during pregnancy.

Julian felt another blow.

Then a folder.

DNA test brochure.

Unopened?

No.

Results.

Eli’s paternity.

Julian froze.

Was Eli his?

The result showed:

99.99% probability Julian Hale biological father.

Why did Monica test?

Maybe Gavin demanded.

Messages later revealed Gavin had asked:

Make sure the kid is his before we move money around.

Julian felt sick.

Gavin had viewed even paternity as risk.

Monica had secretly tested Eli at three months.

Then a second document.

A life insurance quote on Julian.

Not Eli.

Five million.

Applicant Monica.

Not completed.

Why?

Gavin messages:

If J dies before audit, everything slows down.

Monica:

No.

Gavin:

I’m not saying do anything.

Monica:

Then don’t ever say that again.

Important.

Monica rejected harming Julian.

At least then.

That mattered.

She had boundaries.

Then crossed another.

No simple killer persona.

Then Gavin reply:

Fine. Baby is enough.

Julian nearly vomited.

There.

More direct.

Baby is enough.

Enough for what?

Remove custody tie.

Create chaos.

Allow flight.

Maybe all.

Then Monica:

Stop.

Gavin:

You know I’m right.

No response.

Julian sat in storage facility office while detectives cataloged.

Rachel Foster beside him.

He said:

“She could have taken Eli and left.”

Rachel looked.

“Maybe Gavin didn’t want a baby.”

“Then she could have left Gavin.”

“Yes.”

“Then why?”

Rachel did not answer.

Because no answer would make sense.

Then Detective Alvarez brought one more item.

A handwritten list in Monica’s notebook.

FRIDAY:

4:30 Mrs B cards?

4:45 courtyard quiet

5:00 J upstairs call

5:15 leave apartment

6:00 storage

8:30 airport

Julian stared.

Mrs B cards?

Evelyn Bell played cards downstairs Fridays at four-thirty.

Usually.

That day she canceled because friend sick.

Monica expected balcony unwatched.

The plan depended on ordinary routine.

Evelyn happened to be home.

Marcus happened to enter courtyard.

Two accidents saved Eli.

Julian thought of miracles again.

No.

People.

Chance.

Action.

Then one line under schedule:

Do not look down.

Julian stopped.

What did it mean?

Do not look down after throwing?

Could be instruction to self.

He closed notebook.

Enough.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown.

He answered without thinking.

Silence.

Then Gavin Reese.

Julian knew voice.

“Julian.”

His body went cold.

“Where are you?”

“I need you to listen.”

“No.”

“Monica is lying.”

Julian almost laughed.

“About what?”

“She planned this.”

“You were texting her.”

“I thought she was going to leave Eli with you.”

There.

Gavin trying distance.

“What does ‘baby is enough’ mean?”

Silence.

Then:

“She told me she had a way to make sure custody wasn’t an issue.”

“What way?”

“She wouldn’t say.”

“Then why ‘one minute’?”

Gavin inhaled.

“I thought she was handing him to her sister.”

Julian stared.

Camille was Eli’s aunt.

No plan existed.

Lie.

Then Gavin said:

“I can prove Monica moved the money, not me.”

There.

Real motive for call.

Not Eli.

Money.

He wanted bargain.

Julian said:

“Call the police.”

Gavin:

“I can’t.”

“Then don’t call me.”

“Julian, if I go in, Monica says I told her to do it.”

Julian whispered:

“Did you?”

Silence.

Call ended.

Alvarez traced? Julian had police present perhaps. They recorded? He put speaker? Too late. But call logs.

Gavin was scared.

Maybe of prosecution.

Maybe of Monica’s testimony.

Maybe of truth.

Then Marcus texted Julian through detective-approved contact.

How’s Eli?

Julian looked at sleeping baby.

He answered:

Safe.

Then Marcus replied:

Good.

Nothing heroic.

Nothing dramatic.

Just the word Julian needed.

Safe.

For now.

Outside the hospital, police searched for Gavin.

Inside, Eli slept.

May you like

And Julian began to understand that the case would not be solved by deciding which adult was more monstrous.

It would be solved by reconstructing choices one message, one transfer, and one minute at a time.
