Chapter 3

Gavin Reese was arrested thirty-six hours later in a motel outside Providence.

Not at an airport.

Not at a border.

Not under an alias.

He had paid cash but used his own driver’s license.

The dramatic fugitive everyone imagined turned out to be a man sitting alone with a laptop, three phones, and $42,000 in a duffel bag.

Julian almost found that insulting.

After everything, Gavin had not vanished into some international escape network.

He had driven ninety minutes and rented a room near an interstate.

Detective Alvarez reminded Julian:

“People can plan sophisticated fraud and still panic.”

Good.

No mythology.

Gavin’s attorney immediately denied that he encouraged Monica to harm Eli.

The attorney’s statement said:

Mr. Reese understood “gone” to mean that Ms. Hale would leave the child safely with family before departing.

Julian laughed when Rachel Foster read it.

“Safely with who?”

“No one identified yet.”

“Exactly.”

Then police recovered Gavin’s devices.

Messages.

Bank records.

Draft travel plans.

And one deleted note.

REST OF PLAN AFTER BABY EVENT:

Baby event.

Not handoff.

Not babysitting.

Event.

Still ambiguous legally.

Morally nauseating.

Then audio.

Gavin recorded calls automatically through a business app.

He forgot.

Or did not know the archive synced.

One call with Monica four days before the fall.

Gavin:

You cannot keep saying you’re leaving and then using Eli as the reason you can’t.

Monica:

He is six months old.

Gavin:

Exactly. He doesn’t know anything yet.

Monica:

What does that mean?

Gavin:

It means if you wait until he’s older, it gets harder.

Monica:

I’m not abandoning my child.

Gavin:

Then you’re not leaving Julian.

Silence.

Then Monica:

What if there’s an accident?

Julian stopped breathing when Alvarez read transcript.

Gavin:

What kind?

Monica:

I don’t know.

Gavin:

Don’t tell me things I can’t unhear.

Monica:

You asked me to choose.

Gavin:

I asked you to leave.

Monica:

Without him.

Gavin:

Yes.

Then call ended.

This changed the balance.

Monica introduced accident idea.

Gavin did not.

At least there.

Then another call next day.

Gavin:

You scared me last night.

Monica:

Forget it.

Gavin:

I can’t.

Monica:

Then maybe we’re done.

Gavin:

No.

Silence.

Gavin:

If anything happens, it cannot look planned.

Julian stood from chair.

There.

Not direct instruction to kill.

But participation after.

Then Monica:

I knew you’d understand.

Gavin:

I understand that you need to stop talking like this on the phone.

That was worse.

He understood enough to worry about evidence.

Then call later:

Gavin:

Mrs. Bell?

Monica:

Usually downstairs Friday.

Gavin:

Good.

That connected schedule.

Gavin knew witness routine.

Then Monica:

Julian will be upstairs for investor call.

Gavin:

Then Friday is clean.

There.

Clean.

A word.

No baby mentioned.

But context.

Prosecutors would decide.

Julian already had.

Then Monica’s statement changed.

After being confronted with recordings, through counsel she admitted Eli did not fall accidentally.

She said she was “overwhelmed and dissociated” and released him without fully understanding what she was doing.

Julian hated that phrase.

Was dissociation possible?

Maybe.

Mental health evaluation would matter.

But schedule.

Tickets.

Messages.

Do not look down.

How much planning can coexist with acute altered mental state at final moment?

Potentially some.

But not simple accident.

At least she stopped lying about mechanics.

Then her lawyer requested full psychiatric assessment.

Good.

Not because diagnosis excuses.

Because court needs state of mind.

Julian agreed information matters.

He did not have to like it.

Then Evelyn Bell.

Mrs. Bell became media hero overnight.

She hated it.

Reporters camped outside building.

One headline:

GRANDMA NEIGHBOR TRIED TO STOP BALCONY HORROR.

Evelyn called Julian furious.

“I am not anyone’s grandmother except my own grandchildren.”

He almost smiled.

She continued:

“They put my age in every article like I’m a talking antique.”

Julian said:

“I’m sorry.”

“Not your fault.”

Then:

“I need to tell police something I forgot.”

What?

The afternoon before incident, Evelyn heard Monica and Gavin arguing inside apartment.

How know Gavin?

She had seen him visit before.

Often when Julian away.

There.

Affair witness.

What did she hear?

Gavin:

You said Friday.

Monica:

I said maybe.

Gavin:

I moved everything because of you.

Then door slammed.

Evelyn did not mention initially because focused on fall.

Now relevant.

Detective took.

Then Marcus.

His bribe text traced to prepaid phone purchased near Gavin’s office by a man named Leo Marsh.

Who?

Gavin’s assistant.

Twenty-seven.

Financial analyst.

Did Leo know murder plan?

He claimed no.

Gavin called him after fall:

Need witness to stop exaggerating. Offer settlement.

Leo asked:

How much?

Gavin:

250.

Leo interpreted $250,000?

Apparently.

He bought phone and texted.

Did Gavin authorize threat:

Take care of yourself?

Leo said that was his own wording.

He meant incentive, not threat.

Terrible.

Could be considered intimidation.

Leo cooperated.

He had no knowledge of planned fall before.

Another person pulled into crime after.

Gavin used subordinates casually.

Then forensic accounting.

The 2.8 million became 4.6.

Money siphoned over eighteen months from Hale Housing Foundation and related vendor accounts.

Monica signed eight payments.

Gavin structured invoices.

Where money went:

1.7 million offshore Costa Rica account controlled by Gavin.

900,000 to Blue Meridian investment account.

750,000 cash equivalents.

600,000 to an entity controlled by Monica:

M Hale Design Consulting.

She had no design business.

Julian stared.

“You knew about that company?”

“No.”

Did Monica spend?

Some.

Luxury purchases.

Debt payments.

$120,000 transferred to private account.

So she benefited directly.

Not just lover manipulation.

Then storage-unit cash.

$180,000.

Likely from shell transfers.

Then Monica’s attorney acknowledged she knew some invoices false.

There.

Financial crime.

Now motive clearer.

Internal audit was scheduled Monday.

Julian had ordered after controller noticed duplicate vendor names.

Did Monica know?

Yes.

He told her casually at dinner.

“We’re finally cleaning up foundation books next week.”

She texted Gavin ten minutes later.

J audit Monday.

We have to go before.

Then plan accelerated.

Flight Friday night.

Why Eli could not come?

Gavin’s message:

Three adults with a baby do not disappear. Two adults do.

Julian reread.

Not only custody.

Practical fugitive logic.

Then Monica:

He needs me.

Gavin:

Then stay.

Monica:

I can’t.

Gavin:

Then choose.

Again.

The choice.

She chose herself and Gavin.

Not in abstract.

By trying to remove Eli permanently.

Julian felt something in him harden.

Then psychiatric evaluator’s preliminary assessment leaked? Should not leak. Julian learns via court summary later, not private details. For now no.

Then apartment search.

Police found balcony railing measurements on Monica’s tablet.

Search history:

survival fall grass infant?

four story fall child statistics.

courtyard camera angle.

neighbor card club Friday.

Julian stopped.

No dissociation could explain days of search.

Maybe mental state complex.

But premeditation stronger.

Then one search:

can parent be charged if baby falls balcony accidental.

There.

She researched legal consequences.

Then:

how long police hold passport after child accident.

Julian felt sick.

She planned not just act.

After.

Then one note app:

If J thinks I’m broken he’ll protect me.

Julian stared.

Protect.

She expected Julian to interpret as tragic mental break?

Maybe.

Then:

She had scripted.

No need speculation now.

Detective Alvarez said:

“This is significant.”

Julian almost laughed.

Significant.

Yes.

Then Monica’s charges upgraded.

Attempted murder.

Conspiracy.

Child endangerment.

Fraud and embezzlement-related charges.

Gavin faced conspiracy, fraud, witness tampering, and possibly attempted murder conspiracy depending prosecutor.

Leo witness-tampering count under review.

No convictions yet.

Julian felt no relief.

Then Marcus came for follow-up appointment same hospital.

Shoulder in sling.

Julian asked to see him.

Marcus agreed.

Eli sat in infant carrier.

Bruises fading.

Marcus looked.

“Can I?”

He did not reach.

Good.

Julian lifted Eli slightly.

Marcus touched one foot.

Eli kicked.

Marcus laughed.

Then Julian told him about charges.

Marcus shook head.

“I don’t want details.”

Julian looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because I keep seeing the fall.”

Marcus breathed.

“I don’t need the rest in my head.”

Fair.

He had his own recovery.

Then Julian offered to pay medical bills.

Marcus refused initially.

Insurance through workers comp? He was on delivery job. The company covered some.

Julian said:

“Not as reward. You got hurt saving my son.”

Marcus looked.

“I don’t want debt between us.”

“Neither do I.”

They agreed Julian’s family foundation—not the compromised housing foundation, perhaps separate personal funds—would reimburse uncovered costs anonymously? Marcus resisted. Better Julian personally covers documented out-of-pocket through legal agreement without publicity, no strings.

Marcus accepted.

No hero payment.

Just expenses.

Then Marcus said:

“Someone offered me money to lie.”

“I know.”

“I almost wanted to take it.”

Julian stared.

Marcus smiled grimly.

“Not because I would. Because quarter million dollars is quarter million dollars.”

Honest.

Then:

“I want you to know being tempted for one second doesn’t mean I was going to do it.”

Julian thought of Monica.

Choices.

Temptation.

Action.

“Yes.”

Marcus looked at Eli.

“People don’t become what they think. They become what they do next.”

Julian felt the sentence.

Maybe too neat.

Still true enough.

Then Eli started crying.

Julian lifted him.

Marcus smiled.

“Go.”

Nathan? No. Julian walked hallway.

Your job is Eli.

He had no phrase from lawyer, but maybe same principle.

The case would expand.

Money.

Affair.

Conspiracy.

Mental state.

Corporate theft.

May you like

But Eli needed bottle.

And for once, Julian chose the small urgent thing over the enormous explanation.
