Chapter 1

The tiger hit the barrier with a sound Adrian would hear in his sleep for the rest of his life.

Metal rattled. Emma screamed. Somewhere beyond the steel mesh, a male tiger the color of fire paced in a tight circle, shoulder muscles rolling beneath his coat. His roar seemed too large for the narrow service corridor, too large for the concrete walls, too large for Adrian's chest.

He dropped to his knees beside his daughter.

"Emma. Look at me."

The seven-year-old was on the floor, one sock soaked through from a puddle beside a drain. Her face had lost all color. Her right palm was scraped, and the sleeve of her yellow sweater had torn at the elbow.

"Dad—"

Adrian pulled her into his arms so fast she gasped.

"I've got you. I've got you."

Behind him, Chloe stumbled through the restricted door.

"Oh my God!" she shouted. "Emma!"

Adrian turned.

Chloe's face looked horrified. For one second, that expression almost convinced him.

Then Emma buried her face against his chest and whispered, "She pushed me."

Adrian went still.

The tiger roared again.

Chloe stopped three steps away.

"What?"

Emma clutched Adrian's shirt.

"She pushed me through the door."

Chloe's mouth opened.

"Emma, no. You wandered in here. You ran away from me."

"I didn't."

"Sweetheart, you were upset because I said you couldn't have another ice cream. You took off."

"No!"

Emma's voice cracked so violently Adrian felt the sound in his bones.

He looked from his daughter to Chloe.

They had been together two years. Engaged for six months. Chloe had helped Emma with homework, sat beside her through stomach flu, learned exactly how Emma liked the crust cut off grilled cheese. She had been patient when Emma asked whether marrying Adrian meant Chloe would become her "replacement mom."

Chloe had cried after that conversation.

Not in front of Emma.

In Adrian's arms.

"I never want her to think I'm replacing anyone," she had said.

Now Emma was trembling against him.

"She pushed me," she said again.

A door slammed open farther down the corridor.

"Everybody stay where you are!"

A zookeeper in a green uniform ran toward them, followed by a security officer. The keeper's name tag read MAYA RUIZ.

She checked the emergency barrier, then the tiger, then Emma.

"Is anyone hurt?"

"She's scraped up," Adrian said. "The tiger didn't touch her."

"Thank God."

Maya crouched beside the barrier panel.

"This dropped automatically when the interior motion sensor picked up a human body in the transfer zone."

Adrian stared at her.

"At the last second?"

"Pretty much."

He looked at Emma again.

Maya rose, already reaching for her radio.

"Control, lock feline service sector three. We have an unauthorized entry and an emergency-barrier deployment."

The security officer turned toward Chloe.

"Ma'am, how did you get through that door?"

Chloe blinked.

"What?"

"This is a staff-only corridor. The public door is alarmed and access-controlled."

"It was open."

Maya's head turned sharply.

"No, it wasn't."

Chloe looked at her.

"Excuse me?"

"That door locks automatically. It cannot remain open unless someone physically holds it or badges through."

Adrian felt Emma's grip tighten.

The security officer noticed something.

"What's in your hand?"

Chloe looked down.

Her right fist was closed.

For a moment, no one moved.

Then she slowly opened it.

A white plastic card rested against her palm.

Green stripe. Zoo logo. Staff photograph.

Maya swore under her breath.

"That's a staff access card."

Adrian stared.

Chloe stared too, almost as though she had never seen it before.

"I found it."

"Where?" the officer asked.

"On the ground."

"Where on the ground?"

"Near the door."

Maya stepped closer.

"That card is assigned to Jonah Price. He works carnivore maintenance."

Chloe swallowed.

"Then I guess he dropped it."

Adrian's mind moved slowly because part of him refused to let it move at all.

The restricted door required a card.

Chloe had a card.

Emma said Chloe pushed her.

The tiger had been feet away.

He stood, carrying Emma with him.

"Chloe."

She looked at him.

"Tell me exactly what happened."

"I already did."

"Do it again."

She stared at him, wounded.

"Adrian, she ran off. I followed her. By the time I reached the door, she was already through it. I saw the card on the ground and picked it up because I thought maybe someone had dropped it trying to stop her."

Maya frowned.

"The door closes in under four seconds."

Chloe looked at her.

"So?"

"So if Emma badged herself in, the card would have had to be in her hand. It wouldn't be lying outside by the time you arrived unless she dropped it in the doorway."

Emma lifted her head from Adrian's shoulder.

"I never had a card."

Chloe's eyes flashed.

Only for a second.

But Adrian saw it.

Not fear.

Anger.

"She's confused," Chloe said.

Emma began crying again.

"I'm not!"

Adrian's voice hardened.

"Stop calling her confused."

Chloe looked stunned.

"I'm trying to help."

"Then stop explaining what she remembers."

The security officer reached for the card.

"Ma'am, I'm going to need that."

Chloe hesitated.

Another thing Adrian noticed.

Why hesitate?

Then she handed it over.

Maya radioed for medical staff. Adrian carried Emma back toward the public corridor while Chloe followed several steps behind.

He could feel her watching him.

He didn't look back.

In the zoo clinic, a nurse cleaned Emma's palm and wrapped it in gauze. There were no bites. No claw wounds. No broken bones.

The emergency barrier had saved her.

Adrian sat beside the examination table while Emma drank apple juice through a straw.

Chloe was kept outside while zoo security began reviewing access logs.

Emma didn't speak until the nurse left.

Then she whispered, "Dad?"

"I'm here."

"Are you mad at me?"

The question nearly destroyed him.

"No."

"Because I went where I'm not allowed?"

"You told me Chloe pushed you."

Emma nodded.

"Then you didn't choose to go there."

She studied his face as if trying to decide whether he meant it.

"Do you believe me?"

Adrian took her uninjured hand.

"Yes."

Her eyes filled.

"Really?"

"Really."

She leaned against him.

For several minutes, he said nothing.

Then he asked, "Tell me what happened before the door opened."

Emma looked toward the closed clinic door.

"Chloe said she had a surprise."

Adrian's stomach tightened.

"What kind of surprise?"

"She said the zoo had baby tiger cubs that regular people don't get to see."

"Did you ask to see them?"

"No."

"Then what?"

"She took me down the hallway. I told her the sign said staff only."

"What did she say?"

"She said rules don't matter if you know the right people."

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

"Did she have the card then?"

"Yes."

He opened them.

"You're sure?"

Emma nodded.

"She held it on the black square thing and the door beeped."

Adrian felt something inside him go cold.

"Then what?"

Emma's breathing changed.

"I told her I didn't want to go."

"And?"

"She got mad."

"How?"

"She said I always ruin everything."

Adrian stared at his daughter.

Emma looked down at the juice box.

"Then she opened the next door and said I should look. I said no. She pushed my shoulder."

"Hard?"

Emma nodded.

"I fell. Then the tiger made the loud sound."

She covered her ears at the memory.

Adrian moved closer.

"You don't have to tell me more right now."

"She shut the door."

His body went rigid.

"What?"

"After I fell. She shut it."

Adrian could hear his own pulse.

"Was she inside the corridor with you?"

Emma shook her head.

"She stayed outside."

That changed everything.

It wasn't a shove during an argument.

It wasn't carelessness.

Emma was saying Chloe badged open a restricted area, pushed her through, then closed the door behind her.

A door leading toward a live tiger.

Adrian stood so suddenly the chair scraped across the floor.

Emma flinched.

He immediately softened his face.

"I'm not mad at you."

"I know."

"I need to talk to the security people. You're safe here."

She grabbed his sleeve.

"Don't leave me with Chloe."

He stopped.

"I won't."

A security supervisor named Paul Brennan met Adrian outside the clinic.

His expression was careful in the way professionals looked when they already knew something bad.

"Mr. Hale, we reviewed the access system."

"And?"

"The card Chloe had was used at 2:14 p.m. to open the public-to-service corridor. Then again at 2:16 to open the feline transfer hall."

"So Emma couldn't have wandered in."

"Not without that card."

"Cameras?"

Paul's jaw tightened.

"There's a problem."

Of course there was.

"What problem?"

"The service corridor camera went offline at 2:08."

Adrian stared at him.

"Six minutes before the card was used."

"Yes."

"Coincidence?"

"We're not assuming that."

Maya approached quickly from the hallway.

"Paul."

Something in her voice made both men turn.

She was holding a tablet.

"I checked Jonah Price's schedule."

"And?"

"He's not working today."

Paul frowned.

"Then why was his access card here?"

Maya looked at Adrian.

"That's not the strange part."

She turned the tablet toward them.

A staff profile filled the screen.

Jonah Price. Carnivore Maintenance Technician.

The photograph showed a man in his mid-thirties with dark hair and a narrow face.

Adrian felt a strange spark of recognition.

Then Maya said, "Jonah reported that card stolen yesterday afternoon."

Adrian looked toward the clinic door.

Chloe sat on a bench beyond the glass, staring at her phone.

"Who had access to the report?" he asked.

"Zoo security and department management."

"Could a visitor know the card was missing?"

"Not unless someone told them."

Adrian watched Chloe.

She looked up.

Their eyes met through the glass.

Her expression changed.

Just slightly.

Not guilt.

Recognition.

As if she knew exactly who Maya was talking about.

Then Chloe lowered her phone.

On the screen, before it went dark, Adrian saw an incoming message.

He couldn't read the whole thing.

Only the first line.

DID SHE GET CLOSE ENOUGH?

Adrian stopped breathing.

Chloe looked down at the screen.

Then quickly deleted the message.

May you like

And in that moment, Adrian understood something worse than the locked door.

Chloe might not have planned this alone.
