Chapter 5

Chloe asked to see Adrian at noon.
He almost refused.
Then Detective Cole said, "You may hear something from her that she won't tell us."
So Adrian sat on one side of an interview-room table while Chloe sat on the other.
No engagement ring.
Police had bagged it with her personal property.
The pale line around her finger disturbed him more than the ring itself would have.
She looked exhausted.
"How is Emma?"
"Safe."
"With Laura?"
Adrian's expression changed.
Chloe immediately realized the mistake.
"I assumed."
"Don't."
"Adrian, please."
"Why did Martin have surveillance photos of my daughter?"
Chloe looked down.
"I didn't know about those."
"Why did he have a fake behavioral report?"
No answer.
"Why was yesterday called final resolution on his calendar?"
Her face went pale.
"What?"
For the first time, Adrian believed her surprise.
That made things worse, not better.
"You didn't know."
Chloe shook her head slowly.
"No."
"Then tell me what you did know."
She covered her face with both hands.
"I thought the barrier was guaranteed."
Adrian stared at her.
There it was.
Not innocence.
Not misunderstanding.
Knowledge.
"Guaranteed to do what?"
Chloe lowered her hands.
"Drop before she could reach the animal zone."
Adrian felt something tear loose inside him.
"You knew there would be a tiger."
"I knew Kavi would be in the inner enclosure. I was told the emergency barrier would drop the second Emma crossed the sensor. She was never supposed to get close."
"She was feet away."
"I know."
"You pushed her."
Chloe began crying.
"I panicked."
"You pushed her."
"Yes."
The word was almost inaudible.
Adrian looked away because if he kept looking at her, he wasn't sure he could stay seated.
"Why?"
"Martin said we needed an incident."
"An incident."
"Something scary enough that you would believe Emma had become unsafe."
"Why?"
Chloe wiped her face.
"Because you were going to cancel the wedding."
Adrian frowned.
"I wasn't."
"You were starting to."
"Based on what?"
"Emma."
He stared.
"She stopped liking me. She watched me. She started asking questions. She told you I was snooping in your office."
Adrian remembered.
Two months earlier, Emma had said Chloe was "looking at Dad's secret papers."
Chloe laughed and said she was searching for wedding stamps.
Adrian believed her.
"You were snooping."
"Yes."
"For Martin."
Chloe closed her eyes.
"At first."
Adrian almost laughed.
"At first?"
"I met you because Martin wanted information about the foundation audit."
There it was.
The beginning of their relationship rewritten in one sentence.
"You targeted me."
"At first."
"Stop saying that like it changes anything."
"Because it did change!"
Chloe leaned forward.
"I fell in love with you. I fell in love with the life we had."
"You told my daughter her dead mother left because she cried too much."
Chloe froze.
Adrian saw the answer before she spoke.
"She told you."
"Yes."
Chloe looked down.
"I was angry."
"At a six-year-old."
"She kept comparing me to Natalie."
"She was six."
"I know."
"No. You keep saying you know things after proving you don't."
Chloe cried quietly.
Adrian felt nothing comforting rise inside him.
"What was the plan yesterday?"
"Emma would go through the door. I would follow. The barrier would drop. Security would respond. Martin had already prepared reports saying Emma had been acting recklessly."
"And then?"
"You'd finally agree she needed help."
"What kind of help?"
Chloe hesitated.
Adrian leaned closer.
"What kind?"
"Residential evaluation."
For a second, he didn't understand.
Then he did.
"You wanted me to send my daughter away."
"Temporarily."
"So you could marry me without her there."
"No."
"Then why?"
Chloe's voice shook.
"Because Martin said Emma had seen too much."
Adrian went still.
"Seen what?"
"He didn't tell me everything."
"Try."
"She saw Jonah at the house. She saw me photographing your files. She heard Martin and me arguing. She found a flash drive."
"What flash drive?"
"Jonah gave it to me."
Adrian's heart sped up.
"When?"
"About a month ago. He said he had evidence Martin was stealing grant money. He wanted me to convince Martin to stop before he went to police."
"Where is it?"
Chloe shook her head.
"I lost it."
Adrian stared.
"You lost evidence worth potentially millions of dollars?"
"I hid it in my dresser. It disappeared."
"Who knew?"
"Nobody."
"Emma?"
Chloe swallowed.
"Maybe."
Adrian remembered Emma's habit of borrowing Chloe's colored hair ties from the top dresser drawer.
"Did you ask her?"
"Yes."
"What did she say?"
"She said she didn't take it."
"Did you believe her?"
Chloe didn't answer.
Adrian stood.
"You terrorized my daughter over a flash drive."
"I never wanted her dead."
"That's your defense?"
"No."
"Because the fake reports say otherwise."
Chloe looked terrified.
"Martin never showed me those."
"The calendar says final resolution."
"I didn't know."
Adrian studied her.
He believed that part.
Not because Chloe deserved trust.
Because fear had finally stripped the performance from her face.
"Who was supposed to control the barrier?"
"Victor."
"Victor who?"
"Victor Haines. Head of zoo security."
Detective Cole, listening from the observation room, entered immediately.
"Say that again."
Chloe flinched.
"Victor Haines. Martin said Victor would monitor the sensors personally."
"Was Victor the security friend Jonah mentioned?"
"I thought so."
"Did Jonah agree to yesterday's plan?"
Chloe hesitated.
"Originally he agreed to give me an access card for a harmless service corridor. Then Martin changed the location. Jonah refused."
"So how did you get Jonah's stolen card?"
Chloe looked toward the mirror.
"Martin gave it to me."
Cole's eyes hardened.
"And Jonah?"
"I don't know."
"Someone sent us a photograph of him restrained."
Chloe started crying harder.
"I don't know where he is."
Cole leaned forward.
"Think."
"Victor owns storage buildings."
"Where?"
"I don't know. Martin joked once that Victor could hide an elephant in one of his warehouses and nobody would notice."
Cole left immediately.
Adrian remained seated.
Chloe looked at him.
"I know you hate me."
"No."
She seemed surprised.
"I don't know what I feel yet."
"I love you."
Adrian almost smiled from disbelief.
"Love isn't the sentence you say after hurting someone. It's the thing that should have stopped you before you did it."
Chloe broke down.
Adrian walked out.
He drove directly to Laura's house.
Emma met him at the door.
"Did they catch the zoo boss?"
"Not yet."
She hugged him.
Adrian knelt.
"I need to ask you about something you may have found in Chloe's room."
Emma's face changed.
"The little black thing?"
His pulse jumped.
"A flash drive?"
"I don't know. It looked like one."
"Where is it?"
Emma looked guilty.
"I put it somewhere safe."
Adrian almost laughed.
"Where?"
She took his hand and led him upstairs.
In the guest room, she opened her pink backpack.
From the bottom she removed a stuffed fox.
One seam had been opened and poorly stitched closed with purple thread.
Adrian stared.
"You sewed it?"
"Aunt Laura taught me."
Emma pulled at the thread.
Inside the stuffed fox was a black flash drive.
Adrian took it carefully.
"Why did you hide this?"
Emma looked down.
"Because Chloe yelled at me when I saw it."
"Did you take it before or after she yelled?"
"After."
"Why?"
Emma's eyes filled.
"Because she said if you ever saw what was on it, our family would be destroyed."
Adrian hugged her.
"You didn't destroy anything."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
He called Detective Cole.
Police collected the drive within fifteen minutes.
It was encrypted.
But Jonah had left a password hint in an unencrypted text file.
KAVI'S FIRST DAY.
Maya knew the answer.
The date the tiger arrived at Westbridge.
The drive opened.
Inside were invoices, access logs, copied emails, and recordings.
One audio file had been created twelve days earlier.
Martin's voice came first.
"The girl is becoming a problem."
Then Victor Haines.
"She's seven."
Martin answered.
"Exactly. Nobody believes seven-year-olds if the adults agree on the story."
A third voice—Jonah—said, "Leave her out of this."
Then Martin laughed.
"We're past that."
The recording continued for six minutes.
By the end, police had probable cause for fraud, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and child endangerment.
But Martin was no longer at the zoo.
Neither was Victor.
Both men had left during the search.
And when officers checked Victor Haines's property records, they found three warehouses.
Police searched the first two.
Empty.
At the third, they found the chair from the photograph.
The ropes.
Blood.
And Jonah's broken phone.
But Jonah was gone.
On the wall behind the chair, someone had written a new message in black paint.
THIS ENDS WHERE IT STARTED.
Maya saw the photograph and went pale.
Detective Cole noticed.
"You know what that means?"
Maya nodded slowly.
"Kavi's first day wasn't at Westbridge."
Adrian looked at her.
"Where was it?"
"An old wildlife transfer facility forty miles north."
"Is it still operating?"
Maya shook her head.
"It closed five years ago."
Cole was already reaching for her radio.
Then Adrian's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered on speaker.
Martin Vale's voice said, "Bring the flash drive, Adrian."
Adrian went cold.
"Where's Jonah?"
Martin ignored him.
"Bring the drive to the old North County transfer station. Alone."
Detective Cole was tracing the call.
Adrian said, "Why would I do that?"
Martin was silent for a beat.
Then another voice came through the phone.
A little girl's voice.
"Dad?"
Adrian's heart stopped.
Emma.
He spun toward the guest room.
Empty.
Laura screamed from downstairs.
May you like
The back door stood open.
And Emma was gone.
