Chapter 7

The first thing Chloe did after Martin pulled her from the wrecked transport van was hit him.

At least, that was what she later told police.

Martin had expected gratitude. He got her fist against his mouth.

He shoved her into the black SUV anyway.

By the time Adrian learned what had happened, the vehicle was already twenty miles away.

Detective Cole moved Emma to a secure pediatric unit overnight, not because she was injured badly enough to require admission, but because the hospital had controlled entrances, armed security, and no connection to the Hale family that Martin could easily exploit.

Adrian sat beside Emma's bed until sunrise.

She slept holding his hand.

Every few minutes, her fingers tightened.

Each time, he squeezed back.

At six thirty, Cole entered with two paper cups of coffee.

"Jonah is awake."

Adrian looked up.

"How bad?"

"Concussion, dehydration, two cracked ribs. He'll recover."

"What did he say?"

"A lot."

Adrian carefully slipped his hand from Emma's and followed Cole into the hallway.

Jonah had been abducted the night before the zoo incident.

Victor Haines intercepted him outside his apartment after Jonah threatened to deliver the flash drive directly to Adrian. Victor forced him into a vehicle and took him to the warehouse.

Martin visited twice.

The first time, he demanded to know where Jonah had hidden copies of the financial records.

The second time, he told Jonah Emma had nearly died.

According to Jonah, Martin wasn't horrified.

He was irritated.

"The exact phrase," Cole said, reading from her notes, "was, 'Victor couldn't even make a safety system fail correctly.'"

Adrian stared at her.

"Fail?"

"Jonah says Martin told Victor to delay the barrier deliberately."

Adrian felt cold.

"Chloe said it was supposed to drop earlier."

"Maybe that's what Chloe was told."

The distinction mattered.

Chloe had pushed Emma believing a barrier would stop her sooner.

Still monstrous.

But Martin had ordered Victor to make it later.

"Why?"

"According to Jonah, Martin wanted an injury. Not necessarily death. Something serious enough that Emma would require psychiatric evaluation and long-term recovery. He believed it would destabilize you and stop the audit."

Adrian stared through the hospital window at his sleeping daughter.

"He wanted to hurt her to distract me."

"Yes."

"She's seven."

"I know."

Adrian laughed once, but no humor came with it.

"Everybody keeps knowing that after the fact."

Cole didn't respond.

"Where would Martin take Chloe?"

"Jonah gave us two possibilities."

"Tell me."

One was a hunting property in the western hills registered to a shell company connected to Victor.

Police searched it before eight.

Empty.

The second was more disturbing.

Westbridge Zoo itself.

"Why go back?" Adrian asked.

"Because Jonah says there is a records vault beneath the old administration building. Paper archives, donor agreements, original grant files. Martin may want to destroy documents we haven't found yet."

"The zoo is crawling with police."

"Public areas are closed today. Staff were told the closure is related to a safety review. There are over a hundred acres and dozens of service buildings. If Martin knows the infrastructure better than our teams do, he could enter without using a public gate."

Adrian thought of the old tunnels.

"And Chloe?"

Cole's face remained neutral.

"He may need her."

"For what?"

"Access. Distraction. A hostage."

Adrian looked back at Emma.

"Or someone to blame."

Cole nodded.

That was the possibility neither of them liked.

At nine fourteen, Chloe's phone came online.

Only for seventeen seconds.

It pinged a tower less than a mile from the zoo.

Police moved immediately.

Adrian was ordered to remain at the hospital.

For once, he didn't argue.

Emma needed him more than the investigation did.

At ten, she woke.

"Is Chloe missing?"

Adrian hesitated.

"Who told you?"

"I heard the police lady outside."

"Yes. Martin took her."

Emma looked at the blanket.

"Is he going to hurt her?"

Adrian didn't know how to answer.

Emma whispered, "I don't want her to get hurt."

He sat beside her.

"Even after what she did?"

Emma nodded.

"I want her to go to jail."

Adrian almost smiled.

"Those are different things."

"Yeah."

She thought for a moment.

"Can you be mad at somebody and still not want them eaten by a tiger?"

Adrian looked at her.

"Definitely."

"Okay."

The simplicity of it broke something open inside him.

Adults spent years turning pain into excuses.

Emma had already found the cleaner answer.

Accountability wasn't the same as cruelty.

Her therapist would later call that distinction a protective skill. Adrian simply called it something he wished more adults understood. Emma could say Chloe had done something terrible without wishing something terrible on Chloe. She could miss the woman who once braided her hair and still refuse to be near her. She could remember pancakes on Sunday morning without allowing those memories to erase the tiger corridor.

Adrian had struggled with that himself. He kept wanting the past to become one clean story: Chloe had either loved them or she had used them. The truth was uglier because it allowed both. A person could make breakfast, remember birthdays, kiss a child's scraped knee, and still choose jealousy over that child's safety. Good moments did not cancel harmful choices. Harmful choices did not require pretending every earlier moment had been fake.

That realization did not soften what Chloe had done. It simply stopped Adrian from wasting energy trying to turn a complicated person into a simple monster. Martin had spent years using that kind of simplification. Adrian was done letting him define the terms.

At eleven twenty-three, Detective Cole called.

"We found Chloe's phone."

"Where?"

"Inside a trash can at a gas station near the zoo."

"Martin planted it."

"Probably. But Chloe left us something."

"What?"

"A voice memo. Seven seconds."

Cole played it.

Traffic noise. Chloe breathing hard.

Then three whispered words.

"Old bird hospital."

Adrian frowned.

"What is that?"

Maya knew.

Before Westbridge built its modern veterinary center, sick birds and small mammals had been treated in a low brick building near the north perimeter. It had been closed for twelve years.

No public access.

No active cameras.

A storm drain connected it to the old records basement.

Police surrounded the area.

This time, Martin didn't have Emma as leverage.

But he had Chloe.

Cole called Adrian again twenty minutes later.

"We're negotiating."

"He's there?"

"We believe so."

"Chloe?"

"Alive."

Adrian sat down.

He hadn't realized how much tension he was holding until that one word loosened part of it.

Alive.

He didn't love Chloe anymore.

Maybe he never knew who he had loved.

But Emma was right.

He didn't want her dead.

"What does Martin want?"

"Safe passage."

"He's not getting it."

"No."

The standoff lasted almost two hours.

Martin spoke through a cracked window.

He claimed Chloe had orchestrated everything.

He said she stole Jonah's card.

She created the fake reports.

She manipulated Victor.

She had become obsessed with removing Emma from Adrian's life.

A convenient story.

One that might have worked if Jonah's recordings didn't exist.

Then Martin changed tactics.

He threatened to burn the building.

Smoke appeared at 1:18 p.m.

Police moved.

The old bird hospital erupted into chaos.

Adrian watched live updates from the hospital hallway, helpless.

At 1:26, Chloe came out through a side door coughing, hands raised.

An officer dragged her behind cover.

At 1:29, fire crews entered.

At 1:34, they found the basement empty.

Martin had escaped through the storm drain.

Again.

But this time Chloe had seen where he was going.

She told Detective Cole from the back of an ambulance.

"The tiger house."

Cole stared at her.

"Why?"

Chloe coughed into an oxygen mask.

"Because he's going to destroy the one thing Jonah copied wrong."

"What thing?"

"The original ledger."

Martin had kept a handwritten ledger before moving his fraud into digital systems.

Names.

Cash withdrawals.

Fake vendors.

Bribes.

Every person who helped.

He had hidden it years ago in a locked service compartment beneath the original tiger house, a place renovated so many times nobody searched it.

Adrian listened over Cole's speakerphone.

"Why would he keep it?" he asked.

Chloe answered through coughing.

"Insurance. He never trusted Victor. Or me. Or anybody."

"Does the ledger implicate you?"

Silence.

Then: "Yes."

Adrian closed his eyes.

At least she had stopped lying about that.

Police converged on the tiger house.

They found the compartment open.

The ledger gone.

And one additional item missing from animal control storage.

A tranquilizer rifle.

Maya called Cole personally.

"There's another problem."

"What?"

"Kavi's night enclosure is unlocked."

Cole went silent.

Adrian stood.

"Is the tiger loose?"

Maya's voice came through the phone.

"Not in the public zoo. The outer habitat gates are secure. But Martin opened the service passage leading into the closed north sector."

"Why?"

Nobody knew.

Then Emma, listening from her bed, spoke.

"I do."

Adrian turned.

"What?"

She sat up.

"Mr. Martin told me something at the old place."

"What did he say?"

"He said people believe animals because animals can't testify."

Adrian stared at her.

Then he understood.

Martin had spent days preparing to blame one tiger incident on a child.

Now he was setting up another story.

Only this time, he needed a body.

And Chloe was the easiest witness to erase.

Adrian grabbed his jacket.

Emma looked frightened.

"Dad?"

"I'm not leaving you alone."

He called Laura.

Then he called Detective Cole.

"Martin isn't running," Adrian said when she answered.

May you like

"What?"

"He's hunting Chloe."
