Chapter 5 - VICTORIA

Victoria’s first defense was that she was testing the hammock.
The footage destroyed.
Second:
Rosa moved frame and Victoria tried to stabilize.
No.
Third:
Victoria suffered postpartum anxiety and believed villa unsafe.
She had anxiety.
Medical records showed treatment.
That mattered for sentencing and understanding.
It did not explain forged land documents.
Fourth:
she wanted Adrian to leave canyon because she was afraid Lily would die there.
This had some truth.
Victoria hated the villa after Lily started crawling.
Cliffs.
Scorpions.
Heat.
Remote medical care.
She repeatedly asked Adrian to move to Scottsdale.
He refused full-time but agreed more city weeks.
Arguments.
Victoria wrote friend:
He loves rocks more than our child.
Real resentment.
Then Halcyon.
At first Victoria contacted Caleb to get a valuation.
She imagined showing Adrian:
Sell and move.
No crime in asking.
Caleb told:
property worth much more if aquifer strong.
Then survey.
Adrian would never permit.
Victoria decided she could “prove” value first.
If results strong, he might accept.
She forged access.
This was the first felony-scale line.
Then results:
very strong.
Caleb offered advisory fee.
Victoria saw independence.
If Adrian sold, she could have her own money, own influence, city home.
Their prenup gave her comfortable but not controlling estate.
Again not poverty.
Control.
Then Rosa saw trucks.
Threat.
Victoria began building a “Rosa oversteps” file.
She wanted fire.
Adrian trusted Rosa.
Would ask questions.
Need incident.
Then terrace.
Victoria’s private note:
Need Adrian to feel villa cannot be child home.
If Rosa involved, both problems solve.
Both.
Lily becomes catalyst for move.
Rosa removed.
Adrian emotionally pressured.
Halcyon sale plausible.
She believed hammock/shade/rope made it safe.
She had rehearsed with empty frame.
Wildlife camera recorded that too.
Two nights before:
Victoria moved empty hammock to railing.
Tipped onto shade net.
Frame bounced and caught.
That gave confidence.
But on actual day Rosa used utility rope, not shade.
The hammock trajectory missed center shade because weight/balance with baby different.
If Rosa had not caught, frame might hit lower stone edge.
Potential fatal.
Engineering reconstruction.
Victoria watched in court.
Cried.
At plea, prosecutor:
“You tested with empty hammock?”
“Yes.”
“And concluded an occupied hammock would behave same?”
“I told myself.”
“You had no engineering basis?”
“No.”
“Did Rosa consent to be your safety system?”
“No.”
“Did Lily?”
“No.”
Then land.
“Did Adrian authorize surveys?”
“No.”
“Signature?”
“I copied from closing documents.”
“Did Caleb know?”
“He knew Adrian wasn’t directly involved.”
“Did he know signature forged?”
Victoria said:
“I never said.”
Messages ambiguous.
She took responsibility.
Charges:
felony child endangerment.
assault/reckless endangerment.
forgery.
fraud.
trespass conspiracy.
environmental offenses.
obstruction.
attempted property fraud.
defamation-related civil not criminal.
No attempted murder.
Sentence substantial.
Years.
Restitution.
Forfeiture of Halcyon-related funds/options.
No unsupervised contact Lily during minority absent family court.
No property/financial fiduciary role for period.
Family court:
Adrian temporary sole custody.
Victoria supervised therapeutic contact only after evaluation.
At first none.
Lily was one.
Later.
Victoria wrote letters.
At five, Lily got simple card:
I love you and I am sorry I made an unsafe choice.
Adrian/therapist allowed.
At eight, fuller:
I wanted your father to leave the canyon. I thought if something frightening happened he would agree. That was wrong.
At twelve:
I also wanted Rosa blamed because she knew about land surveys I had hidden.
Lily asked Adrian:
“Mom used me to sell house?”
Adrian:
“She used danger involving you to try to pressure me toward selling and to discredit Rosa.”
“Did she want money?”
“Yes. Also she wanted to move. Both.”
“Did she love me?”
Adrian had learned.
“I believe she loved you and still made dangerous choices involving you.”
At eighteen, Lily chose one supervised meeting.
Victoria older.
Lily asked:
“Why didn’t you just divorce Dad and move?”
Victoria:
“I was afraid I would lose the version of life I wanted.”
“What version?”
“You with me. Money I controlled. City. Work. Not that canyon.”
“You could ask.”
“I did. I didn’t accept no.”
There.
Control.
Lily:
“Did you think Rosa was beneath you?”
Victoria cried.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she worked for us and I thought Adrian would believe me first.”
“He almost did.”
“I know.”
No hug.
Lily left.
No ongoing.
Victoria after release lived in city, worked administrative role, no public campaign.
Later died after stroke.
Lily grieved from distance.
No funeral.
No obligation.
Victoria’s case was not “evil mother hates baby.”
It was a person turning fear, entitlement, and financial ambition into a controlled-risk fantasy.
The fantasy ended where gravity began.
