Chapter 6 - ADRIAN’S PART
Adrian spent months thinking:
I almost dismissed Rosa.
He had not called her liar.
But his first face had turned to Victoria.
His first question:
What did Rosa do?
He hated.
Therapist Samuel Reed asked:
“Why?”
“Victoria was Lily’s mother.”
“Reasonable context.”
“Rosa worked for me.”
“Not evidence.”
He learned.
He also examined marriage.
Victoria had asked to leave villa.
He resisted.
Why?
The property belonged to his father before him.
Adrian renovated.
Identity.
Victoria said:
“I feel trapped.”
He answered:
“We have a city apartment too.”
She said:
“That is not home.”
He minimized.
Again:
not cause of crime.
But marriage was worse than he acknowledged.
He thought providing options equals listening.
He did not.
Could earlier listening have prevented?
Unknown.
Victoria still responsible.
Adrian also had blind spot with employees.
Rosa’s text:
Can we talk about something in garage?
He replied:
Ask Victoria if urgent.
He created spouse as gatekeeper.
Why?
Convenience.
He trusted.
After:
direct channels.
But no corporate bureaucracy at home.
Rosa could text/call Adrian directly.
No routing.
Adrian reduced travel for six months.
Then resumed reasonable.
He hired second caregiver through agency.
No one person carrying all.
He made villa safer:
glass railing infill.
self-closing gate.
hammock lower only.
window/door alarms? modest.
He considered cameras everywhere.
Dr. Reed:
“Do you want safety or proof?”
Both.
He chose:
exterior/property cameras disclosed.
No hidden interior beyond common security? Wildlife camera independent.
The terrace got visible camera after incident? Maybe no; child barriers enough. He installed one visible exterior security camera covering gates, not lounging areas. Privacy.
The wildlife camera project continued.
Dr. Chen offered remove W-14.
Adrian said:
“Keep it until study ends.”
Not because surveillance.
Research.
At end:
removed.
He did not keep footage.
Official evidence.
No personal replay.
Adrian kept his professional life separate from the property dispute, but he applied the same lesson to the family office that managed his land and investments.
He later separated property management from family.
No spouse or relative could authorize land surveys without owner verification.
Family office added dual confirmation for:
access agreements,
environmental testing,
easements.
No copied signature.
He also created conservation covenant as mentioned.
Lily grew at villa part-time.
Adrian almost stopped bringing.
Therapist:
“If property can be made safe and she enjoys, do not let incident decide.”
At three:
Lily loved lizards.
At five:
collected rocks.
At six:
asked about canyon.
No fear.
At ten:
hiked with guide.
Adrian watched.
She rolled eyes.
At twelve:
camped with school elsewhere.
Good.
Years later Adrian met Elena Ruiz, an art historian.
He dated slowly.
Lily was eleven.
Elena liked city more than desert.
They compromised.
No one had to love canyon.
Important.
They married when Lily sixteen.
No hidden land interests.
Prenup clear.
Elena had no authority over Lily’s contact with Victoria.
Normal household role.
Adrian learned disagreement does not equal threat.
At sixty, he spent more time city.
At seventy, he transferred most canyon acreage into conservation land trust while retaining residence parcel.
This was not reactionary.
Long-term plan.
At eighty, he sold city company? Unneeded.
He wrote Lily:
“The wildlife camera mattered because it contradicted the person I most wanted to believe.”

“The better lesson is not to wait for cameras.”
“Rosa had already told me there was something in the garage.”
“I told her to ask Victoria.”
He owned.
Lily kept.
Adrian died at eighty-eight.
At memorial Lily said:
“My father thought the desert made privacy. He learned isolation can make witnesses more important, not less.”
Then:
“He also learned rocks are not arguments.”
Laughter.
No saint.
He had loved canyon too much.
He learned people can say:
I do not want to live here.
They do not need to manufacture tragedy.
And owners can hear without surrendering every decision.
That was marriage lesson too late for Victoria, useful later.
