Chapter 7 - LILY AND THE CANYON

Lily remembered none of terrace.
She remembered desert.
Dust.
Quail.
Monsoon smell.
Rosa’s tortillas.
Her father’s boots.
At age four:
“Why Mommy not here?”
Adrian:
“She made a dangerous choice and lives somewhere else.”
At six:
“She put your hammock near the terrace edge and tipped it because she believed Rosa would catch you. Rosa did.”
“Why?”
“She wanted me to think the villa was unsafe and wanted Rosa blamed.”
“Was villa unsafe?”
“Some parts needed better child safety. What she did created the danger.”
Good.
At eight:
land story.
Halcyon.
Surveys.
Forged signature.
Lily:
“Mom wanted water?”
“She wanted money and to move. Halcyon wanted access to groundwater.”
“Water under rocks?”
“Yes.”
This interested Lily.
Uh oh trauma destiny.
Her interest in the canyon never determined what she had to study.
At ten, she loved music.
At eighteen, she chose music rather than anything connected to land, water, or property.
Choose history and archival studies? Could tie evidence.
She had no interest in turning the canyon into a profession.
She studied classical piano and music education.
Lily studied music performance, then became a public-school music teacher and later arts administrator.
Good.
At twelve, she asked to see footage.
Adrian said:
transcript first.
She read:
Victoria moves hammock.
looks down.
Rosa enters.
tips.
Rosa catches.
She did not watch.
At sixteen, curiosity.
Watched only first part.
Stopped before tip.
“I know.”
No need.
At eighteen meeting Victoria.
Then college.
She left desert.
No family expectation.
At twenty-five, Lily married Noah Bennett, a civil engineer.
They built their life in a city far from the canyon, and Lily liked the distance.
Had two children.
She taught piano.
At thirty, daughter wanted rock climbing.
Adrian panicked more than Lily.
Lily:
“Different rocks, Dad.”
He laughed.
She checked safety.
Allowed.
At forty, Lily inherited residence parcel after Adrian? He still alive maybe not.
She did not want manage.
After Adrian’s death, his estate gave Lily the option to keep the residence. She declined full ownership and allowed the land trust to operate the property as a research and arts retreat, with no obligation for her to manage it.
At fifty, she visited occasionally for family gathering.
At sixty, Rosa died.
Lily spoke.
At seventy, Victoria died earlier? Could align.
At eighty, Lily taught grandchildren songs.
Canyon story rarely.
Her granddaughter once asked:
“Did Grandma Victoria try to throw you into canyon?”
“No.”
Precision.
“She tipped a hammock over a terrace because she thought Rosa would catch it. It was dangerous enough without exaggerating.”
Family learned.
At ninety, Lily visited research retreat one last time.
Not closure.
A music workshop used villa.
She heard students rehearsing strings.
Loved.
The terrace had glass rail.
Mesquite tree older.
No wildlife camera W-14.
She did not ask exact tree.
The canyon held life:
researchers.
music.
wildlife.
Not crime scene.
She sat twenty minutes.
Then complained heat.
Left.
Good.
Lily’s life became larger when the canyon, music, family, and ordinary risk stopped being forced to mean the same thing as her infancy.
