The Trial of Franklin Cole

Chapter 13 - The Trial of Franklin Cole

Franklin’s trial lasted seven weeks.

Former employees testified.

Families described losing homes.

Grant admitted his role in the arson conspiracy.

Thomas described the sabotaged boat.

Emily read Katherine’s journal aloud.

Franklin watched without visible emotion.

His attorney argued he was a flawed businessman, not a criminal mastermind. He blamed dishonest employees, confused relatives, and changing property laws.

Then the prosecution played the recordings from Unit 814.

Franklin’s own voice filled the courtroom.

People believe whatever protects their comfort. Give them a respectable man and they will ignore the paperwork.

The jury heard exactly how he viewed them.

They convicted him on every major fraud count and found him guilty of criminally negligent homicide in Katherine’s death.

At sentencing, Franklin finally spoke.

He did not apologize.

He said his family had betrayed him after enjoying the life he built.

Emily looked at Grant, Daniel, and Thomas.

None lowered their eyes.

The judge sentenced Franklin to twenty-four years.

At his age, it was likely a life sentence.

Outside, reporters asked Emily whether she forgave him.

“No,” she said.

The answer shocked them.

She continued.

“Forgiveness is personal. Accountability is public. Today was about accountability.”

The clip spread across Facebook.

Thousands of women wrote that they had been pressured to forgive men who never admitted harm.

Emily’s words became larger than her own case.

Still, that night she cried alone in her mother’s old room.

Justice did not restore childhood.

It did not bring Katherine back.

It did not turn Franklin into the father she once needed.

Grant found her sitting on the floor.

He did not offer advice.

He sat beside her until morning.
