The Room Beneath the Library

Chapter 04 - The Room Beneath the Library

Emily returned to Millbrook with an attorney named Maya Brooks.

They entered Hawthorne House through the conservatory because Franklin had changed the front locks.

The mansion felt smaller than Emily remembered.

Dust covered the piano. Her mother’s portrait was gone. Blueprints for luxury condominiums lay across the dining table.

The brass key opened a narrow door hidden behind the library shelves.

Stone steps led underground.

At the bottom was a windowless records room containing decades of family documents.

Emily found ledgers, property maps, and boxes labeled with the names of former employees.

One cabinet held letters from families who had lost homes through Franklin’s construction company.

Another contained signed releases that appeared forged.

Maya photographed everything.

Then Emily discovered a metal cashbox containing her mother’s jewelry and the savings bonds that had supposedly been spent on medical bills.

Her father had taken them.

Beneath the jewelry was a sealed letter addressed to Emily.

Rose had written it before her death.

Your father believes inheritance means possession. It does not. It means responsibility. If you are reading this, Franklin has chosen greed over family again.

The letter explained that Hawthorne House sat on land once used by formerly enslaved families who built a free settlement after the Civil War. Rose had spent years documenting the site.

Franklin wanted the house demolished because an archaeological review would reveal burial grounds beneath the planned development.

Construction would become impossible.

Emily heard footsteps overhead.

Franklin had returned.

He entered the library shouting her name.

Emily climbed the stairs holding Rose’s letter.

Her father stopped when he saw the open door.

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Franklin smiled.

“You have no idea what you found.”

“I found everything.”

“No,” he said. “You found what your grandmother wanted you to believe.”

He reached for the records.

Maya stepped between them.

May you like

Franklin’s smile disappeared.

He looked at Emily and said, “Your mother helped me hide it.”
