The Accusation Against Her Mother

Chapter 05 - The Accusation Against Her Mother

Emily refused to believe him.

Her mother, Katherine, had been gentle, disciplined, and deeply protective of history. She had taught Emily that old buildings carried the voices people tried to bury.

Franklin claimed Katherine signed several property transfers and knew about the false loans.

He produced a folder containing her signature.

Maya examined the pages.

The signatures looked real.

Emily felt the room tilt.

Franklin watched her carefully.

“You made your mother into a saint because she died young. She was no better than the rest of us.”

Emily remembered Katherine’s final months. She had been ill, tired, and often frightened when Franklin entered the room.

Had she helped him?

Or had she been trapped?

Franklin demanded Emily sign a settlement.

He would give her five hundred thousand dollars if she surrendered the estate and remained silent.

Emily refused.

“You will lose everything,” he warned.

“Maybe.”

“You think the public loves a poor graduate fighting her rich father. Wait until they learn your mother helped steal from working families.”

The threat worked.

Emily spent the night reading every document in the hidden room.

By morning, she found a pattern.

Katherine’s signatures appeared only on documents dated during a three-month period before her death.

Hospital records showed she had been receiving strong medication and could barely write.

More importantly, the signatures were identical down to the smallest curve.

They had been digitally copied.

Franklin had forged them.

Emily brought the evidence to the county prosecutor.

The prosecutor hesitated.

Franklin had donated to his campaign.

Maya quietly recorded the conversation.

Within hours, the recording reached state investigators.

The case moved beyond Franklin’s local influence.

That afternoon, television reporters gathered outside Hawthorne House.

Emily stood before them in her graduation dress because she had not had time to change.

She announced that she was the legal owner and would block demolition.

At home, Franklin watched the broadcast.

That was the moment captured in the video everyone later shared.

His face moved from rage to disbelief, then terror.

May you like

Because Emily did not merely own the house.

She had opened the room.
