Chapter 2

The guests were asked to leave twenty minutes later.

There was no graceful way to do it.

Claire and the venue manager moved from table to table telling everyone that the reception was ending early due to a family emergency. Some guests looked genuinely worried. Others moved slowly, taking coats and purses while trying to catch one final glimpse of the people at the center of the scandal.

Phones were everywhere.

By the time the ballroom had emptied, Ethan was certain half of Boston knew that a missing diamond ring had fallen out of Lucas Bennett's wedding cake.

Lucas stood near the windows with both hands in his pockets, watching rain move across the city lights.

Vanessa sat alone at one of the tables.

Her veil was gone. Her bouquet lay on the floor beside her chair. The satin train of her dress had picked up gray streaks from the marble, and she seemed not to notice.

Olivia remained standing.

She had not hugged her sister.

Vanessa had not tried.

Diane kept moving between them as if physically positioning herself might prevent a disaster that had already happened.

Daniel was the only one who looked impatient.

"I'm leaving," he said.

Lucas turned from the window. "You can leave after you answer one question."

Daniel stared back. "You don't get to interrogate me."

"Were you in Room 614?"

Claire looked at the floor.

Daniel noticed.

"Apparently your wedding planner already answered that."

"I want to hear it from you."

Daniel loosened his tie.

"Fine. Yes. I was in Room 614 at the Beaumont Hotel."

Lucas didn't blink.

"When?"

"Last December."

"With Vanessa?"

Diane stepped forward. "Lucas, this is not the place."

He looked at her. "It was supposed to be my wedding. I think I've earned the right to choose the place."

Vanessa whispered, "Yes."

Lucas turned back to her.

She raised her eyes.

"I went to Room 614."

His face hardened. "Why?"

"To meet Daniel."

"Why?"

She looked toward Daniel.

He shook his head once.

It was subtle, almost invisible.

But Lucas saw it.

"Don't look at him," he said. "Look at me."

Vanessa did.

"He told me he had information about your company."

Daniel gave a short laugh. "That's a creative version."

"Shut up," Vanessa said.

It was the first thing she had said all night that sounded like herself.

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

Vanessa continued. "He told me there were financial transfers that could destroy Bennett Strategic if they became public. He said my family was connected."

Lucas stared at her. "And you believed him?"

"I didn't know what to believe."

"So you met my business partner in a hotel room and didn't tell me?"

"Yes."

The word seemed painful for her to say.

Olivia folded her arms. "Tell him the rest."

Vanessa turned toward her. "You don't know the rest."

"I know enough."

Lucas looked from one sister to the other. "Apparently I'm the only person who doesn't."

Olivia took out her phone.

She opened a photograph and placed it on the table.

Lucas looked down.

The picture showed Vanessa leaving a hotel room. Daniel stood in the doorway behind her. The time stamp was 12:17 a.m.

Daniel's hand was on Vanessa's wrist.

Vanessa's lipstick was smeared.

Lucas went very still.

"Where did this come from?"

Olivia answered. "I took it."

Vanessa stared at her. "You followed me?"

"I followed Daniel."

"Why?"

"Because I thought he stole my ring."

Daniel laughed again. "Of course you did."

Olivia ignored him.

Lucas looked at Vanessa.

"Did you kiss him?"

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Lucas—"

"Did you?"

She hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Lucas stepped away from the table.

Daniel spoke quickly. "It was one kiss. It meant nothing."

Vanessa turned on him. "You kissed me."

"You didn't exactly run."

She stood so fast the chair tipped backward.

"You blocked the door."

Daniel's expression changed.

Lucas looked at him. "What does that mean?"

Vanessa's voice shook. "He had shown me files. He said they connected my mother, Olivia, and the Hart Foundation to stolen money from your company. I told him I was leaving. He grabbed my wrist and kissed me. I pushed him away."

Daniel shook his head. "That's not what happened."

"Then why did you have my sister's ring?"

Silence.

Olivia's head snapped toward Vanessa.

"What?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Lucas looked from her to Daniel.

"You knew where the ring was?"

Vanessa nodded.

Olivia moved closer. "For how long?"

"Since that night."

The slap came before anyone could stop it.

Olivia's hand struck Vanessa across the face.

Natalie gasped.

Ethan flinched.

Vanessa did not hit back.

She touched her cheek and looked at her sister with tears running down her face.

"I deserved that."

"You knew?" Olivia whispered. "You let me spend six months thinking I was losing my mind."

"I didn't know how to get it back."

"You could have told me."

"He threatened Lucas."

"So you sacrificed me?"

Vanessa shook her head. "No. I was trying to protect everyone."

"That's what people say when they decide they're allowed to lie."

Lucas sat slowly.

"Start over."

Vanessa looked at him.

"All of it. No excuses."

She took a breath.

"Daniel called me three days after Olivia accused me of taking the ring. He said he knew where it was and that if I wanted it back, I had to meet him at the Beaumont. I thought he was trying to help."

Daniel scoffed.

Vanessa pointed at him. "You sent me photographs of the ring."

Lucas looked at Daniel.

Daniel's jaw tightened. "That proves nothing."

Vanessa continued. "When I got there, he showed me records on his laptop. Millions had been transferred out of Bennett Strategic through consulting companies. Some of the money ended up in accounts connected to the Hart Foundation."

Diane went pale.

Lucas noticed immediately.

"Mom?" Vanessa said.

Diane sat down.

Olivia pulled a small flash drive from her coat pocket.

"She's telling the truth about the transfers."

Everyone turned.

Olivia held the drive up.

"I found them first."

Daniel stared at the device.

The expression on his face was not anger.

It was fear.

Lucas saw it.

"What's on that?"

Olivia walked to the table.

"Bank records. Internal approvals. Vendor invoices. Enough to show that Bennett Strategic sent almost eight million dollars through two shell companies over fourteen months."

Lucas looked stunned. "Eight million?"

"Seven point eight, based on what I could verify."

"To the Hart Foundation?"

"Some of it. Not all."

"Where did the rest go?"

Olivia's eyes moved toward Daniel.

"That's what I was trying to find out when my ring disappeared."

Daniel stepped forward.

"Give me the drive."

Olivia laughed. "Absolutely not."

"You stole company records."

"And you're worried about company policy?"

He moved another step.

Lucas blocked him.

"Don't."

Daniel stopped.

For a moment the two men stared at each other. They had been friends since they were nineteen. They had built a company together. Daniel had stood beside Lucas at the altar less than two hours earlier.

Now Lucas looked at him as if meeting him for the first time.

"Did you steal Olivia's ring?"

"No."

"Did you have it in Room 614?"

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa answered. "Yes."

Olivia looked at her sister. "You saw it?"

"In his hotel safe."

"And you left it there?"

Vanessa's voice broke. "I tried to take it. He caught me."

Daniel laughed. "This is insane."

"You told me if I said anything, you'd make it look like Olivia stole money from the foundation and Lucas authorized the transfers."

Lucas turned toward him.

"Could you do that?"

Daniel's face remained expressionless.

That was an answer.

Lucas remembered a hundred ordinary moments with Daniel that suddenly felt different. Late nights building the company. Vacations. Christmas dinners. Daniel holding a champagne glass after Bennett Strategic landed its first major client and promising they would never become the kind of men who cared more about money than people. Lucas had believed him because Daniel had been there before the money existed.

That history made the silence unbearable.

"Say something," Lucas said.

Daniel looked at him. "Anything I say right now will be twisted."

"Then try the truth."

Daniel's jaw moved, but he still did not answer.

Olivia watched the exchange with a strange sadness. She had spent months believing Vanessa was the person who betrayed her. Now she wondered whether Daniel had counted on exactly that. Families already knew where one another's weak places were. Maybe he had only needed to press.

Olivia plugged the flash drive into Claire's laptop.

Daniel moved again.

Marianne stepped in front of him.

"Sit down, Daniel."

"Move."

Marianne did not.

"I knew your father," she said. "When he was afraid, his left hand shook. Yours is doing the same thing."

Daniel looked down.

His left hand was trembling.

Ethan noticed a strange thing then.

Diane was not watching Daniel.

She was watching Marianne.

And Marianne, for the first time all night, refused to meet her eyes.

The laptop screen lit up.

Olivia opened a spreadsheet.

Rows of transactions filled the display.

Lucas leaned closer.

His confusion became shock.

Then something colder.

At the top of the authorization column were two names.

One was Olivia Hart.

The other was Marianne Bennett.

Lucas slowly turned toward his grandmother.

"Why is your name on this?"

Marianne looked at the screen.

Then at Diane.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Finally Marianne said, "Because the eight million dollars wasn't stolen from us."

Lucas stared at her.

"Then what was it?"

May you like

Marianne's answer came softly.

"Repayment."
