Chapter 4

Daniel made it through the side door before Lucas reached him.

Chairs scraped. Claire shouted for security. Natalie grabbed Ethan before he could follow. Olivia rushed into the hallway, and Vanessa kicked off her shoes so she could run in her wedding dress.

By the time Lucas reached the service corridor, Daniel was gone.

A steel exit door at the far end was swinging shut.

Lucas hit it with both hands and ran outside into the rain.

The alley behind the hotel was empty except for delivery vans and a black sedan pulling away from the curb.

"Daniel!"

The car turned onto the avenue.

Lucas stood in the rain, breathing hard.

Olivia reached the door behind him.

"He has the drive."

"I noticed."

"That was my only copy."

Lucas turned sharply. "Your only copy?"

She looked away.

"I didn't trust cloud storage."

He laughed in disbelief. "You stole evidence of a multimillion-dollar fraud and kept one copy on a flash drive in your coat?"

"I wasn't planning for my sister's wedding cake to explode."

"It didn't explode."

"You know what I mean."

Vanessa appeared in the doorway, barefoot, her dress gathered in both hands.

"Call the police."

Lucas stared at her.

She stopped.

For a moment everything else disappeared between them.

The hotel.

The rain.

Daniel.

The money.

There was only one fact Lucas could not move past.

"You were going to stop the wedding?"

Vanessa lowered the dress.

"Yes."

"When?"

"During the cake cutting."

"Why hide your sister's ring in the cake?"

Olivia answered first. "I'd like to hear that too."

Vanessa looked at her.

"Because I got it back three weeks ago."

Olivia went still.

"How?"

"Daniel keeps a second office at the Beaumont. He still rents Room 614 long-term. After our meeting in December, I started watching him. I found out when he traveled. Three weeks ago, I went back."

Lucas stared at her. "You broke into his hotel room?"

"The assistant manager owed my mother a favor."

Olivia looked at Diane, who had just reached the doorway with Marianne and Claire.

Diane raised both hands. "I didn't know what she planned to do once she got inside."

Vanessa continued. "I found the ring in a safe behind a painting."

"And you didn't return it to me," Olivia said.

"I couldn't."

"Stop saying that."

"Daniel sent me a message the same night. He knew I'd been there. He said if the ring appeared, he would release documents showing that you authorized the transfers and that Lucas knew about the repayment scheme."

Lucas looked at Marianne.

Marianne did not deny it.

Vanessa's voice shook. "He had built a story where everybody looked guilty except him. If I gave Olivia the ring privately, Daniel could say she had possessed it the entire time. If I went to Lucas with accusations and no proof, he could release the forged files first."

Olivia crossed her arms. "So your brilliant solution was dessert?"

Vanessa almost laughed despite everything.

"I needed the ring discovered publicly in a place Daniel couldn't explain. I needed witnesses."

Lucas frowned. "And Room 614?"

"The note was for you. I planned to tell you everything after the cake was cut, before we signed the final marriage license paperwork."

Lucas stared at her.

"You could have told me this morning."

"I tried twice."

"You said you were nervous."

"Because every time I tried, Daniel appeared."

Olivia looked toward the empty street.

"He was controlling you."

"He was controlling all of us."

Marianne stepped outside beneath the overhang.

"Not anymore."

She pulled out her phone.

Lucas looked at her. "Who are you calling?"

"My attorney. Then the police."

Diane grabbed her arm. "Marianne, think."

"I have thought for seven years. That's the problem."

She pulled free.

"I thought secrecy would protect Lucas. I thought I could quietly return what Charles took and close the ugliest chapter of our family history. Instead, secrecy gave Daniel a weapon."

Lucas looked at her coldly. "You don't get to make this noble."

"I'm not trying to."

"Good."

The word hurt Marianne, but she accepted it.

Claire's phone buzzed.

She looked at the screen and froze.

"What?" Natalie asked.

Claire held up the phone.

A new message from an unknown number had arrived.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET THE CAKE STAY STANDING.

Beneath it was a photograph.

Ethan recognized the angle immediately.

It showed them in the service doorway, looking out into the alley.

The picture had been taken seconds earlier.

Somebody was watching them.

Lucas looked into the rain.

The windows of the buildings across the alley were mostly dark.

"Inside," he said.

Nobody argued.

They returned to the ballroom and hotel security locked the service entrances. Police were called. The guests were long gone, but rumors had already escaped. Claire's social media notifications were exploding. A local entertainment account had posted blurry video of the cake collapse with the caption WEDDING DISASTER HIDES BIGGER SECRET?

Lucas turned his phone off.

The police told them not to touch the cake or clean the service room.

While they waited, Claire pulled up the hotel's internal camera system.

"I can access the wedding areas," she said. "I have venue credentials."

She opened footage from that morning.

At 9:12, bakery employees wheeled the cake into the service room.

At 9:47, Vanessa entered.

Everyone looked at her.

The video showed her speaking to the decorators, then waiting until they stepped outside. Vanessa approached the cake, opened a small clutch, removed something, and carefully cut into the bottom tier.

She inserted the ring.

Then she crouched and taped something beneath the cake board.

The note.

Lucas watched without expression.

Vanessa looked miserable.

The video continued.

She left at 9:54.

At 10:03, Claire entered with two assistants.

At 10:11, Daniel walked past the open doorway but did not go inside.

At 10:22, the screen jumped.

Suddenly it was 10:37.

Claire frowned.

"Fifteen minutes are missing."

She rewound.

Same jump.

"Can footage be deleted?" Olivia asked.

"Not with my access."

"Who has full access?"

"Hotel management and security."

Diane looked at Vanessa. "The assistant manager who gave you the room key?"

Vanessa shook her head. "Different hotel."

Claire clicked through other cameras.

The service hallway camera had the same missing period.

The loading dock camera did not.

At 10:26, a catering van entered the dock.

A man in a kitchen jacket stepped out carrying a flat black case.

His face was hidden beneath a baseball cap.

Ethan moved closer to the screen.

"Pause."

Claire did.

"Zoom in on his shoes."

Lucas looked at him. "His shoes?"

"Just do it."

Claire enlarged the image.

The man wore expensive black dress shoes beneath the white kitchen pants.

Not kitchen shoes.

Ethan had seen those shoes before.

At the rehearsal dinner.

They had a thin silver buckle across the top.

Daniel had complained jokingly that they were uncomfortable but Vanessa had insisted the groomsmen wear formal shoes for photographs.

Ethan pointed.

"Those are Daniel's."

Olivia leaned closer.

"You're sure?"

"He spilled sparkling water on them last night and Uncle Lucas gave him a napkin. I remember the buckle."

Lucas's expression hardened.

Claire advanced the video.

At 10:29, the disguised man disappeared into a stairwell not covered by the camera.

At 10:36, he returned without the black case.

Then the footage jumped back to normal.

Lucas looked at Vanessa. "What was in the case?"

"I don't know."

Ethan looked toward the cake.

A thought made his stomach tighten.

"Grandma."

Marianne followed his gaze.

"What?"

"What if the ring wasn't the only thing inside?"

They all stared at the wreckage.

Police had not arrived yet.

Nobody wanted to touch it.

Then Ethan noticed the center support tube from the bottom tier.

It lay on the floor several feet away, coated in frosting.

Something black was visible inside the hollow plastic cylinder.

Marianne used a clean towel to lift it.

She tilted the tube.

A tiny memory card slid onto the table.

Vanessa stared at it.

"I didn't put that there."

Claire whispered, "Then Daniel did."

Olivia shook her head. "Why would he hide evidence in the same cake Vanessa used to expose him?"

Lucas picked up an empty water glass and covered the memory card without touching it.

Nobody spoke for several seconds. The tiny card looked almost ridiculous beneath the glass. Something smaller than Ethan's thumbnail had managed to frighten every adult in the room.

Vanessa stared at it. "If Daniel put that inside after I left the service room, then he knew what I had done."

Olivia frowned. "Which means he could have removed the ring."

"But he didn't," Claire said.

Lucas looked at her.

Claire continued, thinking aloud now. "He left Vanessa's trap in place and added something to it. He wanted the cake opened. Maybe not when Vanessa planned, but eventually."

Marianne's expression hardened. "Then the cake wasn't simply a hiding place. It was a delivery system."

Ethan looked at the broken tiers spread across the marble. "So I didn't ruin his plan either."

Lucas gave him a tired glance. "You changed the timing."

"Is that good?"

"We don't know yet."

Lucas looked back at the memory card.

"Maybe it isn't evidence against him."

May you like

Marianne looked at him.

"Maybe it's evidence against one of us."
