Chapter 9

Diane did not speak for almost a minute.
The warehouse felt colder around them.
Olivia stared at her mother as if the floor had shifted beneath her.
"How do you know Daniel didn't kill Dad?"
Diane looked toward Detective Ortiz.
"Because I was there when Robert collapsed."
Vanessa frowned. "We know that."
"No. You know I found him. That's what I told everyone."
Olivia's voice dropped. "What actually happened?"
Diane sat on a folding chair beside the old archive table.
"Robert received a call that evening. He went into his office and closed the door. I heard him shouting. Your father almost never shouted. When I went in, Daniel was on speakerphone."
Lucas looked at her. "What were they arguing about?"
"The transfers. Robert said he had proof Daniel had created accounts using Marianne's name. Daniel told him to stop digging into things that had protected both families for years."
Olivia whispered, "Then what?"
"Robert hung up. He was furious. He said he was going to the police the next morning. I begged him to wait until we spoke with lawyers. We argued."
Her voice broke.
"He grabbed his chest."
Vanessa covered her mouth.
"I called 911. I gave him his medication. I did everything they told me to do. He died at the hospital."
Olivia's eyes filled.
"Why hide the call?"
"Because Daniel called me again before the ambulance even reached the house."
Detective Ortiz leaned forward. "What did he say?"
"He said if I told anyone about their argument, police would seize the foundation accounts and expose Harbor North. He said Robert's death would become a scandal instead of a tragedy."
Marianne closed her eyes.
"And you believed him."
"I had just watched my husband die. I wasn't thinking."
Olivia shook her head. "You kept not thinking for two years."
Diane accepted that without defending herself.
Detective Ortiz spoke calmly. "Mrs. Hart, nothing you described proves Daniel caused Robert's death. But the call matters. We can review records and see whether threats were made."
Diane nodded.
Lucas looked at the time.
6:14 p.m.
The same number seemed to follow them now.
Three hours until Daniel's deadline.
Police built the operation around Pier 19 carefully.
Lucas would go.
He would appear alone.
A surveillance team would be hidden nearby. Lucas would wear a transmitter. The original trust authorization would not be used; police prepared a high-quality copy in a protective folder.
Marianne objected.
"You're using him as bait."
Lucas looked at her. "He asked for me."
"That doesn't make it safe."
"Nothing about this week is safe."
Vanessa stepped forward. "Then I'm going too."
Detective Ortiz shook her head. "No."
"Daniel used me for months. He may talk if he sees me."
"Or he may react unpredictably."
"He already expects Lucas to disobey the 'come alone' instruction."
Ortiz studied her.
Lucas spoke. "She's not coming."
Vanessa turned. "You don't decide that for me."
"Tonight I do if the decision is whether you walk into a trap with me."
"You don't trust me enough to marry me but suddenly you get to protect me?"
The words hit both of them.
Lucas looked away.
"That's not fair."
"None of this is fair."
Olivia stepped between them.
"Maybe don't solve your marriage in front of the police tactical team."
Vanessa exhaled.
Lucas almost smiled.
Almost.
Detective Ortiz made the final call.
Vanessa would stay in an unmarked vehicle nearby with Olivia and another detective. Marianne and Diane would remain at the command post.
Ethan was ordered home.
This time nobody negotiated.
"You're thirteen," Natalie said.
"I know."
"You've contributed enough to law enforcement for one weekend."
"Technically it's still the same day."
"Car. Now."
At 8:57 p.m., Lucas walked onto Pier 19.
The waterfront was nearly empty. A warehouse renovation project had fenced off most pedestrian access. Wind pushed cold air off the harbor. Metal cables knocked rhythmically against sailboat masts in the distance.
Lucas carried the document folder under one arm.
Detective Ortiz's voice came through the tiny earpiece hidden beneath his collar.
"We see you. Keep walking."
A figure stepped from behind a stack of shipping containers.
Daniel.
He wore jeans, a dark coat, and the exhausted expression of someone who had spent a day running from his own life.
Lucas stopped twenty feet away.
Daniel smiled.
"You look terrible."
"You missed the reception."
"I heard dessert was memorable."
For a moment, they sounded like the friends they had been.
That made it worse.
Daniel looked at the folder.
"You brought it."
"You brought the records?"
Daniel lifted a backpack.
"Everything you need to destroy your family."
"Tempting sales pitch."
"Don't pretend you haven't thought about walking away from all of them."
Lucas's jaw tightened.
Daniel took a step closer.
"Marianne lied to you for seven years. Diane lied to her daughters. Vanessa planned a public ambush at your wedding. Olivia stole confidential files. And I'm the one everyone wants in handcuffs."
"You stole millions."
"I took advantage of a system that was already criminal."
"You broke into Olivia's apartment."
"I took a ring."
"You threatened Vanessa."
"I scared her. There's a difference."
Lucas stared at him.
"You hear yourself, right?"
Daniel's expression hardened.
"Do you know what my father got for helping Charles Bennett save that company? He got blamed. He got paid enough to keep quiet and spent the rest of his life watching your family become rich from a business he helped rescue."
"By stealing from Robert Hart."
"By doing what Charles told him."
"Robert's letter says Thomas profited."
Daniel flinched.
There it was.
The weak point.
Lucas continued. "You built your whole excuse around your father being used. But he was part of it."
"You don't know what you're talking about."
"I know he set up the intermediary accounts."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Give me the document."
"Why?"
"Because Marianne's signature is the thing that ties Harbor North to the Bennett trust."
"And the original shows it was attached to a different authorization."
Daniel said nothing.
Lucas understood.
"That's why you need it. If the original survives, Marianne can prove Charles misused her signature. If you destroy it, you can blame her for everything."
Daniel smiled faintly.
"You're finally thinking like your father."
"I hope not."
Lucas held up the folder.
"Tell me what happened to Robert."
"Heart attack."
"Did you threaten him?"
Daniel glanced toward the water.
"I told him the truth."
"Which was?"
"That if he exposed Harbor North, his foundation would be dragged into it. His daughters would learn their father's fortune wasn't as clean as they thought. The Bennett company would collapse under lawsuits. Thousands of employees could lose jobs."
"So you scared a sick man into silence."
"He made his own choices."
Lucas's voice became colder. "And when he died, you scared Diane."
"Diane was easy. She wanted permission to hide."
In the unmarked car two streets away, Diane heard every word through the police audio feed.
She began to cry.
Olivia did not comfort her.
Not yet.
On the pier, Daniel held out his hand.
"Document."
Lucas lifted the folder but did not move closer.
"First the backpack."
"At the same time."
"We're not college roommates trading textbooks, Daniel."
Daniel's mouth twitched.
Then he looked past Lucas.
A red light blinked once on a distant vehicle.
Police equipment.
His expression changed.
"You brought them."
Lucas didn't answer.
Daniel stepped backward.
"Of course you did."
"Don't run."
"You never could do anything alone."
"Neither could you. You needed our secrets, our signatures, our fear."
Daniel turned.
Police moved.
"Police! Stop!"
Daniel ran between the containers.
Lucas followed despite Ortiz shouting through his earpiece not to.
Daniel reached the end of the pier where a small maintenance boat was tied below.
He jumped onto the lower platform.
His shoe slipped on wet metal.
For one terrifying second he disappeared over the edge.
Lucas reached the railing.
Daniel was hanging by one hand above black water.
The backpack had fallen onto the platform below.
Daniel looked up.
"Help me!"
Lucas froze.
Here was the man who had lied to him for years.
The man who had threatened Vanessa.
Stolen Olivia's ring.
Used Marianne's guilt.
Exploited Diane's fear.
Tried to steal thirty-seven million dollars.
Lucas reached down.
"Give me your hand."
Daniel stared at him.
"Why?"
Lucas grabbed his wrist.
"Because I'm not you."
Two officers arrived and pulled Daniel onto the pier.
He was handcuffed facedown on wet concrete less than thirty seconds later.
Detective Ortiz recovered the backpack.
Inside was the missing ledger, copied files from Bennett Strategic, three encrypted drives, a passport, eighty thousand dollars in cash, and a small black case.
Ortiz opened the case carefully.
Inside lay a second piece of jewelry.
A gold cuff link engraved T.P.
Thomas Price.
Daniel's father.
Beneath it was a note in Robert Hart's handwriting.
Daniel saw the note and stopped struggling.
For the first time all night, he looked genuinely defeated.
Lucas noticed.
"What's on that note?"
Ortiz read it.
"Thomas kept his own records. Daniel knows where."
Daniel closed his eyes.
May you like
The secret he had inherited from his father was no longer protection.
It was evidence.
