Chapter 3 - THE SERVANT THEY NEEDED TO BLAME

Mara had served Blackthorn for twenty-three years.
She had entered at fourteen as a laundry girl.
By nineteen she worked in the nursery wing.
By thirty she had become chief attendant to Lady Elara.
She knew which servants drank.
Which guards gambled.
Which cooks stole butter.
She knew where winter drafts entered.
Which stairs creaked.
Which doors swelled in rain.
That kind of knowledge makes a servant valuable.
It also makes a servant dangerous to people hiding things.
Vanessa understood that.
At first, Vanessa had been kind to Mara.
Too kind, Mara later said.
Gifts.
New uniforms.
A silver brooch.
Then questions.
“Where does Adrian keep Elara’s letters?”
“Who has access to Lily’s seal?”
“What old passages connect the nursery to archives?”
Mara answered ordinary things.
Not secrets.
She grew uncomfortable.
The first true warning came two months before the courtyard.
Mara found Lucien leaving the nursery archive after midnight.
“What are you doing here?”
“Reviewing succession inventories.”
“At midnight?”
Lucien smiled.
“You have become suspicious with age.”
Mara told Vanessa.
Not Adrian.
Why Vanessa?
She was Lady of Blackthorn.
Authority.
Vanessa said:
“I asked him.”
Mara believed.
Second warning:
Lily’s signet chain disappeared for three hours.
The signet was ceremonial.
Not enough to transfer anything.
But used to authenticate nursery trust records.
It reappeared.
Mara told Vanessa.
Again:
handled.
Third:
Mara overheard Lucien and Vanessa beneath the west stairs.
“Once Tharen is dead, the vault listens to Vale blood alone.”
Mara did not know Tharen.
She thought perhaps an old mechanism.
Vanessa saw her.
“What did you hear?”
“Nothing clear.”
After that, Mara’s work changed.
Vanessa began documenting “insubordination.”
Mara refused new medicine? She asked healer to verify.
Mara entered restricted archive? She was retrieving nursery linen.
Mara spoke of Elara too often? Lily’s mother had lived here.
Small things.
Then accusation:
Mara feared Vanessa wanted Lily harmed.
She had not said that.
But Vanessa told Adrian:
“Mara struggles with my place here.”
Adrian had answered:
“She loved Elara.”
Vanessa:
“That is not the same as accepting me.”
He let it sit.
Mara noticed.
Status again.
Dead wife’s servant versus living wife.
The plan needed Mara in two roles.
Witness and scapegoat.
She knew too much about Lucien.
And Adrian would find it believable that Mara’s grief made her unstable around Vanessa.
Vanessa’s private papers, seized later, made this explicit.
MARA:
Old Elara loyalty.
Suspicious of court changes.
Emotionally possessive of Lily.
Can be framed as “saving” child from corrupt household.
Then:
If incident:
Mara brings Lily near Beast.
Beast roars.
Mara loses control.
Lily falls.
Mara blames Vanessa.
She had prepared both outcomes.
If Lily died:
Mara and Beast responsible.
If Mara saved:
Vanessa could still accuse attempted sacrifice.
If Adrian doubted:
Lucien invokes emotional instability.
If crystal stayed dark:
their story might hold.
The Witness Crystal had not awakened in living memory.
Vanessa thought it was decorative myth.
That was her mistake.
Mara read the notes months later during trial preparation.
She closed the folder.
“I don’t want more.”
Her advocate asked:
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Evidence can become another form of captivity.
She already knew enough.
Adrian apologized.
Not global.
Specific.
“When Vanessa said your loyalty to Elara made you unable to accept her, I treated that as plausible without asking you.”
Mara nodded.
“You never asked.”
“I should have.”
“Yes.”
No easy absolution.
Mara also owned her own delay.
“I saw Lucien at the nursery archive. I told Vanessa instead of you.”
“Why?”
“She was my lady.”
“That was reasonable.”
“It was still wrong person.”
Both.
After the incident, Mara stayed at Blackthorn for another year.
Many expected her to become Lily’s permanent guardian-like figure.
She refused that myth.
“I am her attendant, not her mother.”
Eventually she left castle service.
Why?
She wanted a life without stone walls.
She opened a small inn on the southern road with her sister.
Travelers liked her cooking.
She hated accounting.
Lily visited as a child.
Mara always made honey cakes.
At age ten Lily asked:
“Did you save me?”
Mara said:
“I caught a strap.”
“That’s saving.”
“Fine. Once.”
Then:
“Now eat.”
Mara’s inn became successful.
No trauma institution.
No “Mara House for Abused Servants.”
Just an inn.
At sixty, she retired.
At seventy-three, she died.
Lily spoke at her funeral:
“Mara was the person who caught me when someone else let go.”
Then:
“She would tell me to stop making that sound like the only thing she ever did.”
People laughed.
Her niece inherited the inn.
Mara’s life did not remain in the courtyard.
That was one of the first ways Blackthorn stopped controlling people after they left.
