Chapter 6 - THAREN

Freeing Tharen frightened the castle more than Vanessa’s trial.
People understood human betrayal.
A four-hundred-year chained guardian walking through the courtyard?
Harder.
The first morning after the chains broke, half the kitchen staff refused to cross the lower court.
Tharen lay in sunlight.
That was all.
He did not chase.
He did not roar.
He slept.
Children peeked from arches.
One threw bread.
Tharen ignored it.
By noon, rumors said he ate only liars.
False.
By evening, someone claimed he could smell treason.
Also false.
Adrian realized replacing one myth with another would solve nothing.
He asked Tharen:
“What do you eat?”
Goats, mostly.
“Alive?”
Preferably not screaming.
Dry.
Adrian arranged butcher delivery.
No spectacle.
The castle learned ordinary facts.
Tharen was not tame.
He was not pet.
He had boundaries.
He disliked bells.
He slept near warm stone.
He could not fit through many doors.
He hated silver incense.
He also understood the wards better than any human.
Anwen worked with him.
The old covenant required annual inspection of the deep gate.
For centuries humans had done it badly because Tharen was chained too far away.
The deep spring had become unstable.
Not immediate catastrophe.
But neglect.
Again:
fear of the guardian weakened actual safety.
Tharen taught ward-smiths.
Not everything.
Some knowledge belonged to his people.
Were there more Wardens?
Yes.
Far east.
Why had none come?
The binding at Blackthorn prevented Tharen from sending the call.
After freedom, he did.
Months later, another horned Warden arrived.
Smaller.
Female.
Name:
Sareth.
The castle panicked again.
Tharen:
She is my sister’s daughter.
Adrian:
“You have family?”
Tharen stared.
You assumed I grew from the floor?
Adrian laughed.
The mythology collapsed one joke at a time.
But Tharen was not gentle always.
A drunken guard threw a spear near him.
Tharen broke the spear and pinned the guard to a wall without injury.
The guard was disciplined.
No:
monster attacked.
Accurate.
Another time Tharen roared at Lily when she wandered near the deep gate at age four.
She cried.
Adrian almost exploded.
Then learned she crossed a ward line.
Tharen had warned.
Lily later said:
“He’s loud.”
Yes.
Safe does not mean soft.
At age six, Lily asked:
“Did Tharen save me?”
“No.”
“Mara did.”
“Did he help?”
“He warned.”
“Could he catch me?”
“No.”
Accuracy.
At eight Lily began learning old oath.
Not because destiny.
Because she was heir.
Tharen refused to become her mystical tutor.
Teach your own child.
He would answer questions about wards.
Not raise future ruler.
Good boundary.
Adrian learned.
The relationship between House Vale and Wardens changed legally.
No ownership.
No chaining except mutual emergency restraint.
Wardens not subjects.
They maintained gate by treaty.
Royal court recognized the covenant.
Some nobles objected.
“Giving legal standing to beasts?”
Tharen attended one hearing.
He said in their minds:
You chained me for four centuries and now object to paperwork.
The chamber went silent.
Treaty passed.
The old Ash Decree was repealed.
Emergency ward law rewritten:
No creature may be executed solely to break magical seal.
Independent ward review.
Multiple witnesses.
No single Keeper of Seals.
Institutional repair.
Tharen stayed at Blackthorn another thirty years.
Then left.
Why?
The deep gate stabilized.
Sareth took alternating watch.
He wanted to see the eastern mountains again.
Adrian felt strangely abandoned.
Tharen:
You freed me. Do not complain when I leave.
Fair.
He returned sometimes.
Lily as adult saw him twice.
At Adrian’s funeral, Tharen stood outside the courtyard.
No speech.
He touched one horn to stone.
Then left.
Years later, children told stories of the great horned guardian.
Lily corrected when needed.
“He was not a pet.”
“He was not a demon.”
“He was not always nice.”
“He was a person of his kind who had been imprisoned unjustly.”
Language mattered.
The creature everyone feared became neither saint nor mascot.
He became what he had always been:
a Warden.
And Blackthorn finally learned to live with truth that was less simple than monster.
Tharen’s freedom did not turn him into a pet or saint; it restored the relationship the old oath had originally required.
