Chapter 9 - ADRIAN’S LAST YEARS
Adrian never fully forgave himself for the first second in the courtyard.
Vanessa accused Mara.
He looked at Vanessa.
He had not condemned Mara.
But he leaned.
He felt it.
Brother Samel, a physician trained in grief and battle shock, asked:
“Would you like to have no instincts?”
“No.”
“Then your task is not to erase the first instinct.”

Adrian learned.
He also examined why he married Vanessa so quickly.

Loneliness.

Each independent.
Major emergency action required two plus magistrate.

Succession rules restated plainly:

No First Charter surprises.
He also changed servant access.
Any servant could petition magistrate without household superior.
Would people abuse?
Sometimes.

“Tharen can still be dangerous.”
“Vanessa could still have been kind in other moments.”
“Judge actions accurately.”
Lily kept.
At eighty, Adrian saw Tharen after years away.
The Warden looked at him.

“You are rude.”
True.
They sat in silence.
At eighty-eight, Adrian became ill.
No deathbed confession performance.
Lily already knew.
He died in his rooms overlooking the east hills.
At funeral, Tharen returned.
