Chapter 7 - LILY AND THE CASTLE

Lily remembered none of the cradle.
Her earliest memory of Tharen was his shadow.
Huge across the courtyard wall.
She was three.
She thought it looked like antlers.
At four, she called him “Stone Goat.”
Everyone laughed except Tharen.
I have endured war, betrayal, and iron. I will not endure that name.
She used it for two weeks.
Then stopped.
At six, Adrian told the basic story.
“Vanessa made a dangerous plan. Mara caught your cradle.”
“Why was Tharen there?”
“He lived there then.”
“Because he was bad?”
“No. Because our family had done something wrong a long time ago.”
Children can hear family wrongdoing without inheriting shame.
At eight, Lily learned Vanessa had tried to blame Mara and Tharen.
She asked:
“Why would Dad believe a monster?”
Adrian:
“I almost believed a person because I had already been taught the other one was a monster.”
That took Lily time.
At ten, she asked to see the Witness memory.
The court had preserved a crystal echo copy.
Adrian said:
“You can later if you want. You don’t need to.”
She read transcript instead.
At fifteen, curiosity.
She watched part.
The most disturbing detail was Vanessa looking down.
Checking Mara’s position.
Lily paused.
“She needed Mara.”
“Yes.”
“To save me.”
“Yes.”
“And to blame her.”
“Yes.”
That contradiction shaped Lily’s understanding of power.
At eighteen, Lily inherited formal heir duties.
But Adrian did not make her rule immediately.
She studied.
Lily studied astronomy and mathematics at the Royal Academy.
She loved stars.
No courtyard destiny.
She returned to Blackthorn at twenty-three.
Not to become queen immediately.
She worked on calendar reform and navigation tables.
People were disappointed.
They wanted heroic heir.
She liked numbers.
At twenty-eight, she married Tomas Ren, a physician-scholar.
Not for alliance.
The northern houses complained.
Adrian ignored.
They had one son, Elias.
Lily insisted succession remain eldest-child regardless of sex.
No return to ancient charter.
At thirty-five, Adrian stepped back from daily rule.
Lily became Lady of Blackthorn.
Her first major reform had nothing to do with Vanessa.
Irrigation taxes.
Good.
Leaders need ordinary problems.
She also completed archive reforms:
servants and guards could file protected reports outside direct supervisor.
Wardens had independent treaty council.
No spouse automatic access to seals.
No old family office controlling everything.
Process.
At forty, a servant falsely accused a steward of theft.
Important.
Independent review found accusation mistaken.
Lily did not punish reporting.
She corrected facts.
Safety systems must survive false alarms.
At forty-five, Tharen returned once.
He looked older.
Do Wardens age?
Slowly.
He asked:
Do humans still fear me?
Lily:
“Some.”
Good.
Do you?
“Sometimes.”
Better.
At fifty, Mara died? Mara 23 years older maybe Lily 50, Mara 73. Yes.
Lily attended inn funeral.
At sixty, Adrian died.
Lily mourned.
At seventy, she opened parts of the old archive to scholars.
Not raw crystal memories involving children.
Privacy even in magic.
The Witness Crystal’s powers became regulated.
No one could casually replay private danger.
Access required:
magistrate,
family representative,
ward custodian,
and purpose.
Evidence is not entertainment.
At eighty, Lily’s granddaughter asked:
“Did the crystal save you?”
“Mara caught me.”
“The crystal?”
“It proved what happened.”
Same distinction.
At ninety, Lily still climbed observatory stairs slowly.
She preferred stars to court.
Blackthorn had changed.
Courtyard railing repaired.
No chains.
Witness Crystal still hung overhead.
Dull most days.
Lily liked dull.
It meant no Vale blood in mortal danger.
A quiet crystal became a good sign.
Her life grew larger than the day it lit.
