THE WOMAN THEY SOAKED AT THE WEDDING OWNED EVERYTHING

Chapter 01 - THE WOMAN THEY SOAKED AT THE WEDDING OWNED EVERYTHING
## chapter 01 - The Woman on Her Knees
The wedding guests had gathered on the lawn of the beautiful white mansion when the sound of laughter suddenly stopped.
Sixty-eight-year-old Eleanor Whitmore was on her knees in the wet grass.
Her silver hair clung to her face. Water streamed down the sleeves of her black lace dress and dripped from her chin.
Standing six feet away, holding a green garden hose, was the bride's mother, Victoria Hale.
Victoria wore a fitted champagne-colored dress and the calm expression of a woman who believed she had just put someone in her place.
"I told you not to come near the wedding party," she said.
Eleanor clutched her old black purse against her chest.
"I only wanted to speak to my son."
A few guests looked away.
Others stared.
No one moved.
Behind them stood the mansion where Eleanor's only son, Daniel, was getting married.
Daniel had spent the past year telling everyone that his mother had become difficult after his father's death.
Confused.
Possessive.
Embarrassing.
Victoria raised the hose again.
"You've already caused enough trouble."
A second stream of cold water struck Eleanor across the shoulder.
A few people gasped.
Then the front door opened.
Daniel's future father-in-law, Richard Hale, stepped onto the porch in his tuxedo.
"What the hell is going on?"
Victoria turned.
"Richard, stay out of this."
But Richard wasn't looking at his wife.
He was staring at Eleanor.
More specifically, at the papers beginning to slide from the purse she was clutching.
One envelope had opened.
A legal document was visible inside.
Across the top, beneath the embossed seal of a law firm, were four words.
TRANSFER OF PROPERTY OWNERSHIP.
Richard went pale.
May you like
Because he recognized the address printed beneath it.
It was the address of the mansion behind him.
