The House Nobody Deserved

Chapter 13 - The House Nobody Deserved

Daniel couldn't understand.

"This was Dad's home."

Eleanor corrected him.

"It was our home."

"Then why sell it?"

"Because nobody lives here anymore."

The answer stayed with him.

The mansion had become a symbol.

To Daniel, it represented success.

To Victoria, status.

To Charles, collateral.

To Eleanor, grief.

Thomas was gone.

The rooms were beautiful but empty.

Eleanor didn't want to spend the rest of her life protecting a monument to the past.

She wanted to live.

The mansion sold four months later.

The buyer was a family with three children.

On closing day, Eleanor walked through the rooms one last time.

She stopped in Thomas's office.

Daniel stood beside her.

"I'm sorry I wanted this place so badly."

Eleanor smiled.

"You didn't want the house."

Daniel looked confused.

"You wanted your father's approval."

Daniel's eyes filled.

"Did I ever have it?"

Eleanor handed him Thomas's letter.

"More than you knew."

That afternoon, Eleanor purchased a modest cottage near the coast.

No marble staircase.

No ballroom.

No five-acre lawn.

She loved it instantly.

Daniel helped her move.

While unpacking boxes, he found something Eleanor had saved.

The black lace dress from the wedding.

Still stained.

Still damaged.

"Why keep this?"

Eleanor took it from him.

"To remember."

"The humiliation?"

"No."

She smiled.

"The day I finally stopped letting other people decide who I was."
