The Cabin by the Lake

Chapter 11 - The Cabin by the Lake

Thomas Whitmore had owned a small fishing cabin two hours north.

Almost no one knew about it.

Except family.

And Charles.

Daniel drove there with police.

Eleanor stayed behind.

She had already spent enough years chasing other people's mistakes.

Charles was arrested before sunrise.

Inside the cabin, investigators found financial records, forged stamps, and copies of Eleanor's identification.

They also found something unexpected.

A recording device.

Charles had recorded several conversations with Victoria.

He apparently intended to use them as insurance if the scheme collapsed.

The recordings changed everything.

Victoria had known more than she admitted.

But not everything.

She knew about the forged transfer.

She knew Charles planned to borrow against the mansion.

She did not know he had already lost most of the borrowed money.

One recording captured her saying:

"Once Daniel and Madison are married, no one will question it."

Another captured Charles asking:

"And Eleanor?"

Victoria replied:

"We'll make sure people think she can't manage her own affairs."

When Eleanor heard the recording, she closed her eyes.

That hurt more than the hose.

Victoria hadn't simply tried to steal her property.

She had tried to steal her credibility.

Her independence.

Her identity.

Daniel listened beside her.

When the recording ended, he whispered, "I helped her."

Eleanor looked at him.

"You believed her."

"I repeated those things about you."

"Yes."

"I told people you were confused."

"Yes."

Daniel began crying.

Eleanor didn't immediately comfort him.

Some guilt needed to be felt before forgiveness meant anything.

Finally, she said:

"Then spend the rest of your life being more careful with someone's dignity."
