The Woman With the Garden Hose

Chapter 19 - The Woman With the Garden Hose
Nearly two years after the disastrous wedding, Victoria visited Eleanor's cottage.
She came alone.
Eleanor met her outside.
For several seconds, neither woman spoke.
Then Victoria noticed Eleanor watering flowers.
With a green garden hose.
They both looked at it.
Victoria covered her face.
"Oh God."
Eleanor started laughing.
Victoria stared at her.
Then she laughed too.
It was awkward.
Painful.
Human.
Eventually, Victoria apologized again.
This time Eleanor accepted.
Not because the past had disappeared.
Because Victoria had finally stopped demanding forgiveness as proof she deserved it.
They sat on the porch.
Victoria asked about the foundation.
Eleanor told her.
Then Victoria surprised her.
"I'd like to volunteer."
Eleanor raised an eyebrow.
"You?"
"I suppose I have experience with the wrong side of the problem."
Eleanor laughed.
"That's one way of describing it."
Victoria didn't become Eleanor's best friend.
Life wasn't that simple.
But she became useful.
Then trustworthy.
Eventually, welcome.
Months later, Eleanor watched Victoria explain financial exploitation to a group of seniors.
She spoke honestly about what she had done.
No excuses.
No self-pity.
After the meeting, Eleanor handed her a cup of coffee.
"You've changed."
Victoria looked toward the floor.
"I had to lose nearly everything first."
Eleanor nodded.
May you like
"Some lessons are expensive."
Neither woman knew that the final chapter of their strange story was about to arrive in the mail.
