Martin's Last Bargain

Chapter 12 - Martin's Last Bargain
Jax almost refused.
Then he went.
Martin sat behind thick glass in the county detention center.
He looked nothing like the intimidating man Ethan described.
He looked tired.
Ordinary.
That unsettled Jax more.
People expected monsters to look different.
Most didn't.
Martin picked up the phone.
"So you're Jax."
Jax said nothing.
Martin smiled faintly.
"Rachel always talked about you when she was angry."
"Why am I here?"
"I can help you."
"I don't need your help."
"Caleb does."
Jax's jaw tightened.
Martin explained that Caleb had not merely stayed silent about the charity theft.
Years earlier, he signed documents that allowed Martin access to the fund.
Caleb believed it was temporary.
Martin used those signatures to steal.
Legally, Caleb could still face consequences.
"What do you want?"
Martin smiled.
"Tell Rachel to reduce her cooperation."
"No."
"You didn't even think."
"No."
"My son needs me."
"Ethan needs safety."
Martin's smile vanished.
"You think you can replace me?"
Jax leaned closer to the glass.
"I don't want to replace you."
Martin looked surprised.
"You're his father."
"I may never be."
Jax kept his voice calm.
"But whatever place I have in his life will be earned."
Martin looked away.
Jax continued.
"That's the part you never understood."
"What?"
"People aren't possessions."
Martin hung up.
Jax left.
Outside, Caleb was waiting.
"Did he tell you?"
Jax nodded.
"I'm ready."
"For what?"
"To tell the truth."
Caleb turned himself in voluntarily.
He cooperated fully.
Because of evidence showing Martin manipulated the accounts, Caleb avoided prison.
But he paid restitution.
He sold the old family garage.
Part of the money restored the charity.
When Jax learned about the sale, he felt strangely sad.
"That was Dad's place."
Caleb nodded.
"It became my hiding place."
He looked at Jax.
"Some things aren't worth preserving just because they belonged to family."
Jax understood.
Then Caleb handed him a small metal sign from the garage.
MORGAN & SONS.
Jax stared at it.
"You should have this."
"Why?"
May you like
Caleb smiled sadly.
"Because you're the one who finally learned what being family means."
