Lily's Choice

Chapter 13 - Lily's Choice

The DNA test arrived six weeks later.

Jax hadn't asked for it.

Lily had.

She wanted certainty.

99.99%.

Jax Morgan was her biological father.

Lily stared at the result for a long time.

Then she folded it.

"Okay."

Jax almost laughed.

"Okay?"

"What do you want me to do? Throw a parade?"

"No."

"Good."

She walked away.

Jax assumed she needed space.

An hour later, he found her sitting behind the motorcycle shop.

"You're angry."

"No."

"You're something."

Lily looked at him.

"I spent sixteen years wondering why my dad didn't want me."

Jax sat beside her.

"Now I know you didn't even know."

"Does that help?"

"A little."

"Does it make you angry?"

"A lot."

"At me?"

"Sometimes."

Jax nodded.

"Fair."

Lily looked surprised.

"You're not going to defend yourself?"

"I wasn't there."

"Because you didn't know."

"I know."

"But it still happened."

Jax nodded again.

Lily began crying.

"I hate that I can't blame you properly."

Jax smiled sadly.

"You can blame me a little."

"For what?"

"For not finding Rachel."

"You thought she left."

"I could've looked harder."

Lily leaned against him.

"Mom could've tried harder too."

"Probably."

"Caleb definitely should've."

"Absolutely."

They both laughed.

Then Lily took his hand.

"I don't want to call you Dad yet."

"You don't have to."

"But maybe someday."

Jax looked away because his eyes were wet.

Lily smiled.

"Are you crying?"

"No."

"You definitely are."

"Motorcycle grease."

"On your face?"

"Very dangerous profession."

For the first time, Lily laughed with him.

Not politely.

May you like

Not cautiously.

Like family.
