The Trial

Chapter 15 - The Trial
Martin's trial began eleven months after Rachel's fall.
He pleaded guilty to multiple financial crimes.
The case involving Rachel's injury never produced a simple verdict.
Prosecutors couldn't prove he intentionally pushed her.
But his threats and financial abuse were documented.
The court issued long-term protections.
He also faced prison for fraud and theft.
Rachel testified.
Jax sat behind her.
So did Lily.
Ethan stayed with Helen.
Rachel spoke calmly.
She didn't exaggerate.
She didn't turn Martin into a monster.
She simply explained what it felt like to slowly lose control of her own life.
"At first, he chose the bank."
"Then the accounts."
"Then which friends were bad influences."
"Then whether I should work."
"Then whether my memories were accurate."
She looked toward Martin.
"By the end, I needed permission to believe myself."
The courtroom was silent.
Martin lowered his head.
Rachel continued.
"I don't hate him."
Martin looked up.
"But I will never again confuse someone's need to control me with love."
Martin received a prison sentence.
The stolen funds that could be recovered were returned.
Lily's account was partially restored.
The charity received restitution.
Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.
Rachel walked past them.
She didn't want fame.
She wanted lunch.
Jax took everyone to Miller's Diner.
Ethan ordered two burgers.
Helen objected.
"You can't eat two."
"Watch me."
Everyone laughed.
Then Ethan looked at the empty chair beside him.
For a moment, his face changed.
He missed his father.
Even after everything.
Rachel noticed.
She held his hand.
May you like
Nobody told him he shouldn't.
That mattered.
