Caleb's Empty Garage

Chapter 16 - Caleb's Empty Garage
Caleb invited Jax to the old garage before the new owners took possession.
The building was almost empty.
Jax remembered being ten years old.
Holding a flashlight for his father.
Caleb remembered teaching him to change tires.
They stood beneath the faded MORGAN & SONS sign.
"I ruined everything."
Jax looked at Caleb.
"No."
Caleb frowned.
"You ruined a lot."
Caleb almost laughed.
"But not everything."
Jax handed him a wrench.
Their father's old wrench.
"I hated you."
"I know."
"Part of me still does."
"I know."
"But Lily exists."
Caleb looked down.
"And I missed sixteen years."
"I know."
Jax's voice softened.
"I don't forgive you yet."
Caleb nodded.
"But I'm tired of making hatred the only relationship we have."
Caleb's eyes filled.
"What does that mean?"
"It means Sunday dinner."
"What?"
"Rachel's cooking."
Caleb smiled.
"Is that forgiveness?"
"No."
"Then what is it?"
"A start."
Caleb accepted.
At dinner, Lily barely spoke to him.
Ethan asked too many questions.
Rachel remained polite.
It was awkward.
Nobody pretended otherwise.
But Caleb returned the following Sunday.
And the Sunday after that.
Trust didn't arrive through one apology.
It arrived through repetition.
Showing up.
Telling the truth.
Accepting discomfort.
Months later, Lily finally called him Uncle Caleb.
He excused himself from the table and cried in the bathroom.
Everybody knew.
Nobody embarrassed him.
Except Ethan.
May you like
"Uncle Caleb's crying!"
Some healing, apparently, came with witnesses.
