The Man at Morgan Motorcycles

Chapter 06 - The Man at Morgan Motorcycles

Jax reached the shop before the police finished surrounding it.

Helen stood outside with Ethan.

Safe.

Jax ran toward them.

Helen grabbed his arm.

"He's gone."

"What happened?"

"He came looking for you."

Ethan looked terrified.

Martin had entered through the back door.

He demanded to know where Lily was.

Helen lied.

She told him Lily had left town.

Martin didn't believe her.

Then Ethan appeared.

For one dangerous moment, father and son stared at each other.

Ethan told Martin to leave.

The eight-year-old boy had stood between his father and Helen.

Jax knelt.

"You never do that again."

Ethan looked confused.

"What?"

"You don't put yourself between an angry adult and somebody else."

"But he was yelling at Helen."

"I know."

"I had to help."

"No."

Jax placed both hands on the boy's shoulders.

"You get somewhere safe. You call for help. That's how you help."

Ethan's eyes filled.

"Are you mad?"

Jax's voice softened.

"I'm terrified."

Ethan hugged him.

It happened so quickly Jax almost didn't react.

Then his arms closed around the boy.

Lily watched from several feet away.

Something changed in her expression.

Later, police searched the building.

Martin had left something on Jax's desk.

A photograph.

The same Community Charity Day photograph Ethan had brought to the diner.

But this copy had a message written across the back.

You should have stayed in the past.

Jax stared at the handwriting.

Lily approached.

"That's not Martin's writing."

Everyone turned.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

"Then whose is it?"

Lily pointed at the photograph.

"Caleb's."

Jax felt the room tilt.

He called his brother.

No answer.

Then Detective Ruiz received a report.

Martin Dawson had been arrested thirty miles away after trying to use Rachel's credit card.

So Martin couldn't have left the photograph.

Which meant someone else had been inside the shop.

Someone who knew far more than he had admitted.

Jax looked toward the road.

"My brother wasn't trying to keep Rachel away from me."

Helen frowned.

"What are you saying?"

May you like

Jax turned the photograph over.

"He was trying to keep me away from something."
