The Truth About Her Death

Chapter 12 - The Truth About Her Death

The final medical report arrived three weeks later.

Emily had suffered sudden cardiac failure caused primarily by an undiagnosed genetic condition.

The drugs Michael secretly gave her had likely worsened her health.

But prosecutors could not prove they directly caused her death.

Jonathan felt conflicted.

Part of him wanted Michael responsible for everything.

He wanted one villain.

One simple explanation.

But life had not given him one.

Michael had abused Emily.

Controlled her finances.

Drugged her without consent.

Attempted fraud.

Kidnapped Noah.

But he had not necessarily killed her.

Jonathan gathered Lily and Noah in the living room.

He told them the truth.

Every part.

Lily cried quietly.

"So Dad didn't kill Mom?"

"We don't know whether his actions made her condition worse."

"But her heart was already sick?"

"Yes."

Noah looked relieved.

Then guilty for feeling relieved.

Jonathan recognized it.

"You are allowed to love someone and still know they did terrible things."

Noah looked at him.

"Do I have to hate Dad?"

"No."

"Do I have to forgive him?"

"No."

"What do I have to do?"

Jonathan pulled him close.

"Grow up knowing none of this was your fault."

The permanent guardianship hearing resumed.

Michael appeared by video from jail.

For the first time, he didn't look confident.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

Emily's recordings.

The financial fraud.

The kidnapping.

The secret medication.

Then Lily asked to speak.

The courtroom became silent.

She stood beside Jonathan.

"My mom spent a long time being scared."

She looked toward the screen showing her father.

"My brother and I don't want to spend our childhood being scared too."

Michael lowered his head.

The judge granted Jonathan permanent guardianship.

Michael's parental rights were severely restricted pending the criminal cases.

Outside the courthouse, Jonathan expected relief.

Instead, Lily asked:

"Are we really staying with you forever?"

Jonathan smiled.

"Only until you're old enough to complain about my cooking and move out."

For the first time in weeks, she laughed.
