The Trust Nobody Wanted Anymore

Chapter 15 - The Trust Nobody Wanted Anymore
Claire's inherited trust was worth nearly eight million dollars.
Michael had nearly destroyed a family trying to reach it.
So Claire made an unexpected decision.
She divided part of the trust into educational funds for Lily and Noah.
Jonathan objected.
"They don't need that much money."
Claire smiled.
"It's not for luxury."
She created strict conditions.
Education.
Housing.
Medical care.
No unrestricted access until age thirty.
Then Claire used another portion to establish the Emily Carter Family Safety Foundation.
The organization helped parents and children escaping financial and emotional abuse.
Jonathan initially refused to participate.
"I'm retired."
Claire laughed.
"You were a judge for thirty-one years."
"Exactly."
"You hate retirement."
Jonathan stared at her.
"Emily told you that?"
"Every week."
He joined the board.
Within a year, the foundation helped hundreds of families obtain legal support.
Lily sometimes visited the office.
On one wall hung a small photograph of Emily.
Underneath were words taken from her final recording:
Being afraid inside your own home is not the same as being loved.
One afternoon Lily stood before it.
"I'm glad people know her."
Jonathan joined her.
"They always will."
Lily looked at him.
"Not as the woman who died?"
"No."
May you like
Jonathan smiled.
"As the woman who finally told the truth."
