Chapter 17 - The Day Claire Said Goodbye
Claire received a job offer in California.
She hesitated to accept.
She had spent years building the family she never knew existed.
Lily encouraged her.
"Mom would tell you to go."
Claire laughed.
"How do you know?"
"Because Grandpa tells everybody to stay home."
Jonathan pretended to be offended.
At Claire's farewell dinner, she gave Jonathan the original blue box containing Margaret's letters.
"I think these belong with you."
Jonathan shook his head.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I spent years thinking secrets belonged in boxes."
He looked at Lily and Noah.
"They don't."
Together they read Margaret's letters.
Some were painful.
Some beautiful.
Jonathan learned why she had hidden Claire's birth.
Fear.
Family pressure.
Shame.
None justified the secret.
But understanding allowed him to stop carrying anger everywhere.
Before Claire left, Jonathan hugged her.
It felt strange.
Then natural.
"My daughter," he whispered.
Claire cried.
"My dad."
Jonathan closed his eyes.
Life had taken one daughter from him.
Then, in the middle of grief, revealed another.
He would never call that fair.
