The Empty Bedroom

Chapter 08 - The Empty Bedroom

Jonathan woke at 6:15 a.m.

Noah's bed was empty.

The back door stood open.

Jonathan called his name.

No answer.

Then Lily screamed.

On the kitchen table lay a note.

I have every legal right to my son.

Michael.

Jonathan called police immediately.

An Amber Alert was issued.

Roads were checked.

Airports monitored.

Jonathan blamed himself.

He had installed alarms.

Changed locks.

Taken precautions.

But Michael knew Noah.

He knew the boy sometimes woke early.

Investigators reviewed neighborhood cameras.

At 5:42 a.m., Noah walked voluntarily toward a dark sedan.

Michael had apparently told him something.

Lily knew what.

"He said Mom was alive."

Jonathan stared at her.

"What?"

Lily explained that Michael had once told Noah their mother might secretly be receiving treatment somewhere.

Noah was seven.

He wanted to believe.

Michael had used the one lie a grieving child couldn't resist.

Police tracked Michael's phone toward the state border.

Then the signal disappeared.

Hours passed.

Jonathan sat beside the phone.

At 4:18 p.m., it rang.

Noah.

"Grandpa?"

Jonathan stood.

"Buddy, where are you?"

"I don't know."

"Is your father there?"

Noah whispered.

"He's outside."

Jonathan kept his voice calm.

"What do you see?"

"A big red sign."

"What does it say?"

Noah sounded out the letters.

"P-I-N-E... Pine Creek."

Jonathan knew the place.

A roadside motel seventy miles north.

Police were dispatched.

Jonathan stayed on the phone.

"Listen to me, Noah. You're doing great."

"Grandpa?"

"Yes?"

"Dad says Mom died because of you."

Jonathan closed his eyes.

"Noah, your mother loved you."

"That's not what I asked."

The child was silent.

Jonathan answered carefully.

"Your mother died because she was sick. The police are still learning why."

Then a door opened on Noah's end.

Michael's voice shouted.

The call ended.

Police reached the motel twelve minutes later.

Michael was gone.

Noah was found alone in the room.

On the bed beside him was another note.

This one was for Jonathan.

May you like

You took my daughter.

Now I'll take the truth.
