The Doctor Who Never Treated Her

Chapter 06 - The Doctor Who Never Treated Her

Dr. Stephen Warner appeared in court Monday morning.

He testified that Emily suffered from paranoia and delusional thinking.

Michael sat beside his attorney looking devastated.

Jonathan watched him carefully.

The performance was almost convincing.

Then Jonathan's lawyer asked a simple question.

"Doctor, when did you first meet Emily Carter?"

Warner hesitated.

"Approximately eight months ago."

"Where?"

"My office."

Jonathan's attorney placed Emily's medical calendar on the screen.

The date Warner provided showed Emily had been teaching at school all day.

Her classroom attendance records confirmed it.

Warner changed the date.

Another contradiction.

Then another.

Finally the judge interrupted.

"Doctor, did you ever personally examine Mrs. Carter?"

Silence.

Warner looked toward Michael.

That glance destroyed everything.

The judge ordered a recess.

Within an hour, Warner admitted Michael had paid him to prepare an informal psychiatric letter based entirely on Michael's description of Emily.

The courtroom erupted.

Michael's attorney looked horrified.

Jonathan felt no satisfaction.

Only sadness.

Emily had spent months being called unstable by a husband actively manufacturing the story.

When the hearing resumed, the judge extended Jonathan's guardianship.

But permanent custody remained unresolved.

Michael still had parental rights.

Outside the courthouse, reporters waited.

The funeral story had reached local media.

Jonathan refused interviews.

Michael did not.

He stood before cameras and said:

"My father-in-law is using his influence to destroy a grieving father."

That evening, online comments began attacking Jonathan.

Some called him controlling.

Others said grandparents had no right to separate children from a parent.

Then a video appeared.

It showed Jonathan holding the custody judgment at Emily's funeral.

But the clip had been edited.

Lily's words about the recording were removed.

Michael looked like a devastated father.

Jonathan looked like a powerful old man taking children away.

By morning, thousands of people had watched it.

Then Lily walked into the kitchen holding her tablet.

"Grandpa."

Jonathan looked up.

"People are saying Mom was crazy."

He took the tablet from her.

Lily's eyes filled.

"Can we tell them the truth?"

Jonathan pulled her close.

"Not yet."

"But why?"

"Because truth isn't always strongest when it's shouted first."

That afternoon, the detective called.

Emily's toxicology report had been reexamined.

They found something.
