Caroline's Confession
Chapter 10 - Caroline's Confession
Caroline asked Anna to meet.
Anna almost refused.
They chose a coffee shop.
Public.
Neutral.
Caroline looked different without the black dress and perfect makeup.
She looked tired.
Human.
"I owe you the truth."
Anna stirred her coffee.
"You owe me more than that."
"I know."
Caroline described how she met David.
A business conference.
Charleston.
He was charming.
Funny.
Interested in her ideas.
She knew he was married.
But David said the marriage had ended emotionally.
"He told me you stayed because of money."
Anna almost laughed.
"My money?"
Caroline looked ashamed.
"I didn't know."
"He said you refused divorce because you wanted half his company."
Anna stared out the window.
David had built parallel realities.
In Anna's reality, Caroline was a business consultant.
In Caroline's reality, Anna was a greedy estranged wife.
Neither woman was allowed to know enough to compare stories.
Then Caroline confessed something worse.
"I came to your house that morning because I wanted you to see us."
Anna looked at her.
Caroline's eyes filled.
"I was tired of waiting."
She had expected humiliation.
A confrontation.
Maybe finally forcing David to choose.
Instead, Anna showed the phone.
"I wanted to hurt you."
Caroline began crying.
"I'm sorry."
Anna sat quietly.
Then she said:
"I don't forgive you."
Caroline nodded.
"But I believe you're sorry."
That was different.
Caroline handed Anna a USB drive.
"What is this?"
"Everything David sent me."
Emails.
Contracts.
Messages.
Voice notes.
"I think your lawyer needs it."
Anna accepted it.
"Why give me this?"
Caroline looked down.
"Because my father left me two hundred thousand dollars."
Her voice broke.
"He worked forty years for that money."
Anna softened.
"And I gave almost all of it to a man who lied to me."
Anna understood something.
Different betrayal.

Same lesson.
Trust without truth could become an expensive illusion.
