David's Sister Returns

Chapter 05 - David's Sister Returns
Emily Mitchell lived in Nashville.
Anna called her.
Emily answered after the third ring.
"Anna?"
"Did David send you two hundred and fifty thousand dollars?"
Silence.
Anna's stomach tightened.
"Emily?"
"Where is he?"
"Standing in my kitchen."
Emily exhaled.
"Don't sign anything."
Anna looked at David.
"I haven't."
"Good."
"Why did he send you money?"
Emily remained quiet.
Then she said something Anna never expected.
"Because it was yours."
David shouted from across the kitchen.
"Hang up."
Anna turned.
"What?"
"Anna, hang up."
She put the phone on speaker.
Emily's voice filled the room.
"Mom left you money."
Anna stared at David.
"What money?"
Thomas Mitchell hadn't been the only parent to die.
David and Emily's mother, Joan, passed away four years earlier.
According to David, Joan left almost nothing.
That was a lie.
Joan had inherited investment accounts worth nearly nine hundred thousand dollars.
Her will divided the money three ways.
David.
Emily.
Anna.
Anna couldn't understand.
"Why would she leave me money?"
Emily's voice softened.
"Because she trusted you."
David walked away.
Anna stared at his back.
"How much?"
"Three hundred thousand."
Anna looked at David.
"What happened to it?"
He said nothing.
Emily answered.
"David used it."
Anna felt dizzy.
"All of it?"
"Most."
Emily discovered the missing inheritance months earlier.
She threatened to report him.
David returned two hundred and fifty thousand.
Not to Anna.
To Emily.
He begged her to keep quiet while he replaced the rest.
Emily agreed temporarily because she feared sending her brother to prison.
Anna felt betrayal arriving from every direction.
Her husband.
His accountant.
His business.
His sister.
Then Emily said:
"Anna, there's another reason I stopped speaking to David."
David turned sharply.
"Emily."
She ignored him.
"Seven years ago, I found out he had another affair."
Anna stopped breathing.
Caroline looked at David.
Another affair.
Before Caroline.
Before the forged deed.
Before the secret company.
Anna whispered:
"Who?"
May you like
Emily's answer made David sit down.
"Your best friend."
