The police entered Robert Ellis's office with a warrant.
Inside they found evidence of years of fraud.
Forged signatures.
False invoices.
Hidden accounts.
David wasn't the mastermind.
That surprised Anna.
Robert had been stealing from Mitchell Construction for nearly a decade.
When the company began failing, David discovered the theft.
But instead of reporting Robert, he made a deal.
Robert would help David hide the losses.
David would stay silent about the theft.
One crime protected another.
The file labeled ANNA MITCHELL contained copies of her property records.
Her mother's estate.
The Charleston warehouse.
Her personal investment accounts.
Robert and David had spent months calculating how much money could be borrowed against Anna's assets without immediately alerting her.
Anna read the documents beside Detective Sarah Lopez.
She felt violated in a way she couldn't describe.
Her marriage had become a financial map.
A list of things that could be taken.
Then Detective Lopez found handwritten notes.
A timeline.
One entry read:
A.M. SIGNATURE AFTER ANNIVERSARY DINNER.
Anna remembered.
David had brought champagne.
Candles.
Flowers.
Then, after dessert, he placed the refinance documents in front of her.
She almost signed.
Her mother's voice had stopped her.
Marriage doesn't mean you stop owning your own future.
Anna had told David she'd read them the next morning.
He became angry.
Now she understood why.
If she had signed that night, she might have lost everything.
Anna asked Detective Lopez:
"Can David go to prison?"
"Possibly."
The answer didn't make her happy.
David had been her husband.
She once imagined growing old beside him.
She didn't want revenge.
She wanted distance.
But justice had its own schedule.
Then police found something else.
Robert had recorded meetings with David.
Insurance.
Protection.
On one recording, David said:
"Once Anna signs, Caroline never needs to know where the money actually came from."
Caroline listened beside Anna.
Her face went white.
Anna looked at her.
"You weren't his partner either."
Caroline whispered:
"No."
For the first time, the two women understood.
