The Son at the Footbridge
Chapter 15 - The Son at the Footbridge
Police searched the river and surrounding woods.
Eleanor insisted on leaving the hospital despite her pneumonia. Susan drove her to the orchard with oxygen tanks in the back seat.
They found Richard beneath the footbridge, sitting in the mud.
He was alive.
He had not intended to harm himself. He had come to the place where Eleanor’s first life was broken because he believed it might explain the collapse of his own.
“I wanted Dad to be good,” he said.
Eleanor sat beside him.
“So did I.”
“If he lied about Grace, what was real?”
“Your childhood was real. The times he cared for you were real. His crime was also real.”
Richard looked toward the water.
“I leaked the story because I thought I could control it.”
“That is what our family keeps doing.”
He laughed bitterly.
“Control the truth before the truth controls us.”
Eleanor nodded.
Richard admitted the debts and forged statements. He agreed to cooperate with investigators and enter financial counseling.
He would lose his company.
He might face probation.
Eleanor did not promise to rescue him.
She promised not to abandon him.
That distinction became the first honest boundary between them.
Back at the hospital, Arthur woke fully.
David stood beside his bed.
Their first conversation was awkward.
Arthur apologized for allowing unspoken grief to make Margaret feel second in her own marriage and David feel second in his own home.
David did not forgive him immediately.
He did something more meaningful.
He stayed.
Claire and Lily brought Grace’s photo album.
The entire family gathered around Arthur’s bed: Eleanor, Susan, Richard, David, Michael, Claire, and Lily.
They did not resemble a healed family.
They resembled people willing to stop hiding the wound.
Arthur looked at the gold ring on Eleanor’s hand.
“Did we actually get married?”
Eleanor smiled.
“Yes.”

“Good. I would hate to survive all that paperwork for nothing.”
Everyone laughed, including David.
