Arthur Returns to the Orchard

Chapter 06 - Arthur Returns to the Orchard
Arthur asked Eleanor for one walk.
Nothing more.
They met at the Whitmore orchard, now owned by a corporation planning to convert half the land into luxury homes. The old footbridge still stood, warped and silvered by weather.
Arthur found their initials beneath the rail.
Eleanor touched the carving.
“I hated you here,” she said.
“I hated myself everywhere.”
They spoke about the marriages they had built.
Eleanor admitted Thomas had been a good father and a lonely husband. Arthur admitted Margaret had spent years frightened that he would leave if Eleanor ever returned.
Neither marriage had been false.
Neither had been whole.
Arthur did not ask Eleanor to forgive Margaret.
He only said, “She did something unforgivable because she believed losing me would destroy her. Then she spent the rest of her life making sure I never knew what it cost.”
Eleanor looked toward the orchard.
“What do you want from me?”
“Whatever time can still be honest.”
They began slowly.
Coffee once a week.
Lunch with Claire and Lily.
A visit to Grace’s grave.
Arthur brought the thirty-seven birthday cards and placed them beneath the stone. Eleanor read each one aloud.
In one, he had imagined Grace starting school.
In another, learning to drive.
In the final card, written after Margaret’s death, he apologized for believing a lie because the lie required less courage than the truth.
Eleanor took his hand.
That was how Susan saw them.
She had followed her mother from the house.
The next morning, Richard and Susan confronted Eleanor in her living room.
They accused Arthur of exploiting grief.
They warned that Claire and Lily intended to challenge Thomas’s estate.
Eleanor told them no one had asked for money.
Richard laughed.
“People like that never ask at first.”
Eleanor stood.
“People like what?”
May you like
The room went quiet.
Richard had no answer that did not reveal exactly who he had become.
