The Boy Across the Orchard

Chapter 02 - The Boy Across the Orchard

Eleanor met Arthur in the summer of 1968, when she was sixteen and he was nineteen.

Her family owned an apple orchard outside Millbrook, Missouri. Arthur’s father repaired farm equipment in a metal shed across the county road.

Arthur was quiet, patient, and able to fix almost anything except the old radio in Eleanor’s father’s truck. He worked on it for three weeks because Eleanor sat nearby while he tried.

Their courtship unfolded in ordinary places.

They shared lemonade on the orchard steps. They danced at the county fair. Arthur carved their initials into the underside of a wooden footbridge where Eleanor’s father would not see.

By twenty, Eleanor believed they would marry.

Then Arthur was drafted.

He returned two years later with a scar along his ribs and long stretches of silence he could not explain. Eleanor waited for him to recover. Arthur tried to become the man she remembered.

Before they could rebuild their plans, Eleanor discovered she was pregnant.

She told Arthur beneath the old footbridge.

He held her face in both hands and promised they would marry as soon as he found steady work.

But Eleanor’s father, Charles Whitmore, had already decided otherwise.

Arthur came from a family with debt, a disabled mother, and no land. Charles believed love was a temporary illness and poverty was permanent.

He sent Eleanor to an unmarried mothers’ home in another county.

Arthur was told she had left voluntarily.

Eleanor was told Arthur had signed papers surrendering all claim to the baby.

Neither statement was true.

Eleanor gave birth to a girl she named Grace.

She held her daughter for eleven minutes.

Then a nurse carried the baby away.

The director of the home told Eleanor that Grace had stopped breathing before dawn.

No funeral was held.

No body was shown.

Eleanor returned home hollowed out by grief.

Three months later, her father announced her engagement to Thomas Whitmore, the son of a wealthy landowner.

Arthur saw the newspaper notice.

He believed Eleanor had chosen money over him.

Eleanor believed Arthur had abandoned both her and their child.

The lie separated them for more than half a century.
