The Lives They Built Without Each Other

Chapter 03 - The Lives They Built Without Each Other

Eleanor married Thomas in a church filled with white roses.

He was not cruel. That made the marriage harder to explain.

Thomas was dependable, respected, and emotionally distant. He gave Eleanor a beautiful home and never asked why she sometimes cried in the orchard after dark.

They had two children, Richard and Susan.

Eleanor loved them fiercely.

Still, there remained a locked room inside her life where Grace and Arthur never grew older.

Arthur married three years later.

His wife, Margaret, worked as a nurse at the same unmarried mothers’ home where Eleanor had given birth. Arthur did not know that connection until decades later.

Margaret was practical, sharp, and deeply afraid of losing him.

She gave Arthur a stable home and one son, David.

Arthur became a contractor, then built a successful restoration company. He repaired historic houses while avoiding the ruins inside his own family.

For years, Eleanor and Arthur lived less than forty miles apart.

They attended the same county festivals without meeting.

Their children competed in neighboring school districts.

Once, Eleanor saw Arthur’s company name painted on a truck outside a courthouse. She stood in the rain for ten minutes, waiting to see him.

He never came out.

Thomas died after forty-six years of marriage.

Margaret died six months later.

At the funeral, Arthur found a locked box beneath her sewing table. Inside were old nursing records, a photograph of a newborn girl, and letters Eleanor had written to Arthur from the mothers’ home.

Every letter had been returned unopened.

One envelope contained a tiny hospital bracelet.

BABY GIRL MORGAN, it read, using Eleanor’s maiden name.

Arthur understood that Margaret had known the truth.

What he did not understand was why the adoption record listed Margaret as the witness who transferred the child.

He began searching.

Two years later, his investigation led him to a seventy-one-year-old widow teaching piano at the Millbrook senior center.

Eleanor looked up from the keys.

Arthur stood in the doorway holding the hospital bracelet.

Neither of them spoke for almost a minute.

Then Eleanor asked the question she had waited fifty-three years to ask.

“Why did you let them take her?”
